Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (http://www. bcbsnc. com) (BCBSNC) is pleased to announce that J. Bradley (Brad) Wilson is the organization’s new President, effective immediately. Wilson will retain his role as Chief Operating Officer while Bob Greczyn continues his role as Chief Executive Officer for the North Carolina-based health insurer.
A leader within BCBSNC since 1995, Wilson has broad experience across the business, serving in roles which include Senior Vice President, General Counsel, Executive Vice President, Chief Administrative Officer and Corporate Secretary.
A North Carolina native, Wilson has dedicated his career to the people of the Tar Heel State. Wilson served in the general practice of law for 14 years before serving as General Counsel to Governor Jim Hunt. In that role, he managed the legal department within the Governor’s Office and was the chief legislative strategist for the Governor’s legislative program. He also served as Acting Secretary of the N. C. Department of Crime Control and Public Safety.
“We're pleased to have found a person who is very experienced at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina and who, throughout his life, has been committed to improving the lives of North Carolinians,” said BCBSNC Board of Trustees Chairman Dr. Jeff Houpt. “This culminates a very thoughtful process by the Board of Trustees which has been underway for more than a year. We feel it has produced the right leadership to take our company forward during these times of change in health care.”
“I am honored that the Board of Trustees has selected me as President, and I look forward to the opportunities and challenges ahead,” said Wilson. “Our company is North Carolina’s leading health insurer and has a very important role to play in the lives and success of our customers and our state. I am proud to have the opportunity to help lead our company into the future.”
Wilson’s commitment to the people of North Carolina extends beyond BCBSNC. He has served on and chaired a number of state boards and nonprofit organizations including the University of North Carolina Board of Governors, the N. C. Railroad Company Board, the Meredith College Board of Trustees and the 21st Century Transportation Study Committee. He is also the recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest civilian honor bestowed by the Governor of North Carolina.
Wilson has a B. A. degree from Appalachian State University, a Juris Doctor degree from the Wake Forest University School of Law, and a Masters of Arts degree from Duke University. He is married and has two adult children.
“Few people understand the needs of North Carolinians better than Brad Wilson (http://www. bcbsnc. com),” said BCBSNC CEO Bob Greczyn. “His commitment to the health of our customers and the people of North Carolina is unparalleled. Brad also brings the knowledge and vision to turn challenges in the health industry into solutions that make North Carolinians healthier.”
No specific retirement date has been set by CEO Bob Greczyn (http://www. bcbsnc. com), although he has indicated it will be in 2010. While Wilson moves into the combined role of President and Chief Operating Officer, BCBSNC remains committed to the basics of business and taking care of customers.
