Corporate Teams Score Points for Healthy Eating
New workplace wellness program from Health Enhancement Systems leverages research-based principles of social support
Midland, MI (Vocus) January 20, 2010
Employees will score big and adopt lifelong healthy behaviors with Health Enhancement Systems’ new workplace wellness program (http://www.5on5.com) based on social support principles.
The online program, 5 on 5, focuses on ways to eat better through simple daily habits wrapped in an exciting basketball tournament format. Participants form teams of 5 and compete virtually against other corporate teams in a company setting.
Health Enhancement Systems has gathered the best studies on social support in a newly released white paper, Social Support: Impact on Health and the Bottom Line. Over 30 studies show how a corporate culture can boost employee engagement with social support.
5 on 5 was developed to incorporate team activities and goal setting — the foundation of social support in the workplace. The theme-based campaign appeals especially to those hard-to-get-to-participate male employees.
“5 on 5 is based on research showing how social support — in the form of teams working toward a goal — can achieve health improvement success,” says Dean Witherspoon, president and founder of HES.
In 5 on 5, employees team up for healthy eating and score individual points, for example, by eating a healthy breakfast, three or more vegetable servings, and three or more whole grain servings each day. Participants log daily points online where a shot clock counts down the day’s game time. The simple-to-use software rewards participants with flashy online “baskets” and “dunks,” even “free throws,” as points are logged. The program tracks team standings in tournament play for 6, 8, or 12 weeks.
