The Atlanta Falcons' Youth Football Program and International Olympic Committee member Anita L. DeFrantz will receive the Social Leadership Through Sports award at the opening reception of the international summit Effecting Social Change through Women's Leadership in Sport on Thursday October 20, 2005, 6p. m. at Cobb Galleria Centre.

Lesley Visser, pioneering female NFL sportscaster and conference presenter, will present the award to Walter Dunson, youth football manager for the Falcons' Youth Football Program, for their outstanding leadership and significant social contributions made to youth and families through community sports programs. “The Falcons are a prime example of how a professional sports team can use sport as a vehicle for improving the lives of people within a community,” said Mike Spino, Conference Director.

Donna de Varona, two-time Olympic Gold Medalist and founding member of Women's Sports Foundation, will present the award to Olympian and first female vice president of the International Olympic Committee Anita L. DeFrantz in recognition of her outstanding contributions in the development of leadership opportunities for women, particularly in and through sports. Spino adds: “ DeFrantz embodies the type of leadership that is the focus of the summit, as she is a champion in sports as well as in increasing knowledge about the impact of sport on people's lives.”

The two-and-a-half day summit will focus on the impact that sports can have on effecting social change and the unique contributions of female leadership. It is the only UN-endorsed conference to integrate the importance of women in sport to fostering social improvement and the only US-hosted conference commemorating the International Year of Sport and Physical Education (IYSPE 2005) as proclaimed by the United Nations. The summit is hosted by Kennesaw State University's WellStar College of Health and Human Services October 20-22 in association with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and the International Labour Organisation /Universitas.

Inveneo's solar-powered computer and telephony network gives Uganda's IDP camps access to technologies that can improve lives

Inveneo Inc, a non-profit social enterprise, has partnered with the BOSCO (Battery Operated Systems for Community Outreach) Uganda Relief Project to provide access to computers, the Internet and VoIP telephony for Northern Uganda's Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps. The BOSCO Uganda Relief Fund partnered with Inveneo to provide and deploy Inveneo's solar-powered Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) System to give Caritas and Catholic Charities, and the isolated IDP-camp communities they serve, a vital link to the outside world. This phase of the project serves nearly 100,000 people and provides a communications network of computers and telephones connected via long-range WiFi for multiple locations in seven IDP camps and the Archdioceses office in the city of Gulu.

Inveneo, with funding from BOSCO, has designed and installed a high-speed local-area network using long-range WiFi networking devices, ultra low-power computers and VoIP telephony for Caritas/Catholic Charities. The Inveneo network is powered via solar panels which power battery arrays. Internet connectivity is carried from the city of Gulu via the Inveneo WiFi network to the IDP camps up to 70 Kilometers away. The system is specifically designed to be operable on 12 volts with a range of power options, and is resistant to heat, humidity and dust - so that it can operate in environments where computing has traditionally not been found. It has been designed for ease of use for both users and administrators who are new to technology.

BOSCO saw the potential for communications to transform daily activities in the camps, where few phones and no power exist today. They were searching for a cost - and power-effective solution when they found Inveneo. This phase of the project will connect eight Archdiocese offices, two clinics and 17 schools. The network will be used for all types of communications needs, including logistics, emergency notification, school-teacher training, consultations between clinics and doctors, communicating with American and European donors, and getting out critical information on human-rights violations

"The Diocese will be more efficient in its support of the people with the new ability to communicate immediately with other offices in the camps and funding organizations in the United States and Europe," said Archbishop John the Baptist Odama of the Northern Uganda Archdiocese, where the IDP camps are located.

"Many of Uganda's adults, and especially its children, have suffered greatly due to a war that has lasted more than 20 years. We believe that providing affordable, sustainable communication technologies to the organizations which serve them, like those provided by Inveneo, can change the lives of these people in dramatic ways - simple ways that so many of us take for granted," said Ted Pethick, Navitor Systems of Indiana, the Technical Director and Designer of the BOSCO Project.

ICT relieves their isolation and opens opportunities," said Mark Summer, CEO of Inveneo. The BOSCO Relief Fund Project is planned to extend to 60 IDP camps in Northern Uganda within three years. These 60 camps (of the 104 camps in total) will become trading centers after the conflict ends and the people are able to return to their homes. The Inveneo systems will provide access to life-changing ICT, directly or indirectly to nearly two million people. The project has been funded by donors from the US to date. Gus Zuehlke of the Saint Bavo Catholic Church in Mishawaka, Indiana is the President and Founder of BOSCO and is leading the fund-raising effort. "The longer term plan is to extend the network to reach the homes of the people once it is safe for them to return," said Mr. Zuehlke.

The project has also gotten the attention of the Ugandan government. "We intend to make every effort to support this project, which gives a voice to our people that had been cut off from the outside world," said John Alituma Nsamba, the State Minister for Information and Communication Technology in Uganda.

The people at BOSCO have developed a plan to provide Internet access, computers and Voice-over-IP telephone service in the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Northern Uganda. These camps were developed with the intent to provide safety in numbers. Sadly, 95% of the people in this area are living in absolute poverty and are unable to tap the vast natural resources of the area. Currently, two million people are living (and starving) in these IDP camps in the provinces of Gulu, Kitgum, and Pader. The goal of this project, code named BOSCO: Battery Operated Systems for Community Outreach, is to give these forgotten people, especially the children, a voice. This technology will link these people to the outside world and allow them to become their own advocates. Algae, excessive aquatic plants, cloudy or murky water, odors and even lethargic fish are all problems that pond owners face, but what causes these problems?

Simply stated, ponds with such problems have an ecosystem that is out of balance. This unequal balance is generally caused by too many available nutrients in the water and low oxygen content. Nutrients come from a variety of organic matter that is commonly found in ponds like dead leaves, grass clippings, fish food, fish and animal waste, dead algae and aquatic plants, fertilizer run-off and all sorts of other organic materials. The organic waste releases nutrients that are used by aquatic plants like algae, hydrilla, duckweed and other aquatic nuisance plants to grow and thrive. When excessive levels of nutrients are present these plants can grow fast and quickly take over a pond.

Normally a pond with a sufficient dissolved oxygen level will be able to break down and decompose the organic matter before it can be utilized by pond plants, however, ponds with lower oxygen levels will be slower to react and the organic matter will build. Eventually a situation will occur in which the break down of the waste will put a such a strain on the ponds oxygen level that the marine life, like fish, will become negatively impacted, due to the lack of dissolved oxygen available to them. In extreme cases there can be such low oxygen levels that fish kills occur.

In addition to the dead organic materials creating a strain on the oxygen levels, excessive outbreak of algae can have the same effect. Normally a small amount of algae is ok because pond plants like algae do release oxygen back into the water. It is when algae outbreaks get severe, that they too affect the pond’s oxygen level. During daylight hours, algae consume carbon dioxide from the water and release oxygen, but when night falls, this process is reversed and the algae begin utilizing the ponds oxygen to survive. So when there is a large algae population, oxygen levels can be significantly reduced in the over night hours leading to increased algae growth during the day.

Another byproduct of the cycle of poor organic material breakdown is the increased presence of odors. Material that is slow to breakdown can become anaerobic and emit pungent and noxious gases like ammonia and hydrogen sulfide. Again, under normal conditions where a pond has a healthy oxygen level, the matter is digested aerobically and no odor is produced, but when there is not enough oxygen to do the job, anaerobic microbes begin digesting the waste, creating the odors.

The introduction of aerobic bacteria (microorganisms) can be a welcome addition to most any pond environment. Aerobic bacteria aid in the ponds ability to efficiently remove organic matter and control the nutrient load. The bacteria also improve the pond’s dissolved oxygen level, making it more effective at organic matter breakdown and odor reduction. Aerobic bacteria are also compatible with most non-chemical pond treatments, which make it an easy addition to a pond maintenance program. To make an analogy, aerobic bacteria are to ponds, what fertilizers are to lawns. Fertilizers added to a lawn are intended to promote a healthy soil and enhance the color and thickness of the grass. A healthier grass and soil will resist disease and weeds. Aerobic bacteria do the same for ponds. They create an environment that is healthier and less conducive to normal pond problems.

Make no mistake, a harmonious balance between nutrients and oxygen is not the end-all be-all solution to all pond problems. Certainly there are diseases and other ailments that are started by other reasons, but having a healthy, stable pond environment goes a long way in preventing pond problems.

The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) announces the launch of its public online CIO State Network (StateNet) to enhance communication among healthcare chief information officers on issues related to HITECH at the state level.

The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) is pleased to announce the launch of its online CIO State Network (StateNet) to enhance communication among healthcare chief information officers on important state matters related to the HITECH Act passed last year as well as on other key state health IT activity.

The new website http://www. ciostatenet. org will enable all CIOs, whether CHIME members or not, public access to information, communication and coordination among IT executives at the state level. The ambitious project, which will go live later this month, has at least one CIO volunteer for all 50 states, including the District of Columbia.

The state initiative fits with CHIME’s mission of advancing and advocating the role of CIOs and senior healthcare IT leaders by providing educational, collaborative and advocacy programs, said Rich Correll, CHIME’s president and CEO.

StateNet is being launched in an effort to ensure CIOs are kept informed of events in their states, to help their hospitals and health systems take full advantage of state-level activities under the HITECH Act, said Sharon Canner, CHIME’s senior director of Advocacy.

Under the HITECH Act of February 2009, states are tasked with having a state HIE plan; providing a state-designated entity responsible for health IT; offering strategic and operational plans for HIE infrastructure; and providing state-level directories to enable statewide technology platforms for HIEs. Other activities will be happening at the state level, including HIE planning and implementation grants and regional extension centers.

“The federal government has recognized that healthcare is provided locally and has made health information exchange a focus for the future,” said Randy McCleese, CHCIO, FHIMSS, vice president for information services and CIO at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead, Ky. “Funding for HIEs is being funneled through state governments and healthcare CIOs need to be active to ensure the development of exchanges that meet the needs of healthcare providers. The StateNet program provides CIOs across the country with the opportunity to work locally with the support of CHIME.”

StateNet enables CIOs in states to share important information on their states, while helping CIOs to share intelligence between states as well.

“The primary reason to bring StateNet together is that so much is targeted at state-based initiatives,” said Russ Branzell, FCHIME, CIO and vice president at Poudre Valley Health System, Fort Collins, Colo. “There was nothing out there that has attempted to provide this for all 50 states, and offer common messaging and communication channels.”

States also will have responsibility for operating Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs, which are expected to have differing rules for eligibility and EHR-eligible incentive payment amounts.

To support CIO leaders in each state, CHIME has developed a toolkit to help them gather basic information about HIT activity in their states, such as identifying the HIT planning authority, strategic and operational plans, state-level directories, and HIE business and operational processes.

In addition to the development of the toolkit, CHIME is providing resource materials, including an inventory of state recovery and HIT websites. CHIME also has developed individual list-serves for each state, and is creating publicly available Web pages for sharing state-specific information.

“What’s been interesting is that over the last six weeks, CIOs have finally realized that if we don’t do something where we’re leading this, we’re going to be led and we won’t have a voice,” Branzell said.

For example, Colorado CIOs had already started to organize themselves, and having StateNet gives them the ability to easily communicate. “Now, CIOs from outside CHIME’s typical membership are now actively involved in state initiatives,” he said. As an outgrowth of state CIO coordination, the IT executives are assisting the Colorado Hospital Association with planning for a statewide telemedicine initiative.

As Baby Boomers age they are anxious to retire and many are actively planning for it. Many would be shocked to know that an unplanned health issue can ruin all their plans. While most seniors would prefer to stay at home, the cost of home care may be prohibitive.

Nursing care costs in the US are rising annually. Home health care is $18 per hour. Most agencies require a minimum of three hours of care to send someone to your home. A semi private room in a nursing home is $176 per day equating to $64,240 per year. Assisted living facilities are averaging $110 per day. The need to use any of these services can quickly deplete a retirement nest egg, required the spouse to go back to work or to look at selling other assets.

Many think the government is going to help out through Medicare or Medicaid. Medicare provides a very short term program. Medicaid is for low income people and requires people to spend down all their assets before being eligible. Another alternative is to look into private Long Term Care Insurance. Long Term Care insurance can pay a daily amount to cover home health care, assisted living facilities or a nursing home. It needs to be structured properly so it is advised to use a financial services professional to help navigate the choices.

The Canary Islands are one of Spain's 17 autonomous regions and are integrated into the E. U. while enjoying a special status of a duty-free area.

One of the main municipalities of the North is Icod de los Vinos which has a total area of 140 square kilometres. The climate varies, depending on altitude and location, from an annual average temperature of 22ºC with very little rainfall at sea level, to 18ºC average with an annual rainfall of 70 litres per square metre in the mountains.

The town of Icod de los Vinos dates back to the pre-Hispanic period at the beginning of the 16th Century and has many examples of architecture from that period. One feature in particular that has attracted visitors for more than a century is the Dragon Tree which is said to be more than a thousand years old.

The pine trees of Icod constitute the largest concentration of pine forest in the Canary Islands covering an area of 6.6 hectares. For those who seek peace and quiet without isolation and a moderate sunny climate in an area where serious crime is virtually unknown, the North of Tenerife is worth a visit.

“The Department of Peace legislation -- House Resolution 3760, Senate Resolution 1756, the 'Department of Peace and Nonviolence Act' -- would allocate $10 billion, the equivalent of just 2 percent of the national defense budget, to establish a Department of Peace. It would include a cabinet level adviser to the president and a Peace Academy similar to West Point, where students could learn conflict resolution techniques to deal with issues ranging from war to prison rehabilitation and bullying in schools.

“This effort is part of an international effort to establish departments of peace in other countries has caught on in Australia, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom and Costa Rica.

"Surveys conducted in other countries of the world -- such as France, Denmark and England -- show that people in those countries believe that America is currently the Number One threat to the future stability of the globe -- putting us even ahead of Iran as a threat to peace. The creation of a Department of Peace would serve to reassure people in other countries of America’s true desire for peace.

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) affects up to 5 percent of all North American children ages 5-18, according to Sports Illustrated For Kids writer Rose Kennedy.

Many martial arts schools are teaching the principles advocated by Mr. Miyagi in the "Karate Kid" movies and moving away from the beat-em-up tactics portrayed in most other fictional karate and kung fu films. In an interview for Children Today, martial arts expert and author Joyce Roberson explains that "contrary to the visual perception of karate being a violent sport, the premiere dictate of this sport is nonviolence above all else."
