Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts, a division of Boys & Girls Harbor is proud to announce that Conservatory Director Ramon Rodriguez is the subject of an upcoming feature article scheduled to appear in the January 9th issue of the national publication People Magazine. The article will focus on Mr. Rodriguez’ more than thirty year commitment to ensuring New York children and teens have access to high quality performing arts training and his efforts to create the leading school for Latin music.

Since 1975, Ramon Rodriguez has led the Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts in two major initiatives providing affordable and high-caliber performing arts training in music, dance and drama for children and teens, and documenting and preserving the history of Latin Music through the development of the Raices Latin Music Collection, the nucleus for the first museum for Latin Music. Under his guidance, the Harbor Conservatory offers the most comprehensive Latin Music Program in a Conservatory environment.

For thirty-five years he has had a major, positive impact on the lives of countless young people by identifying talented youngsters and finding a place for them at the Conservatory. He has made a major contribution to preserving and perpetuating Latin music so that it takes its place among the canons of other American musical forms by working to develop the Raices Latin Music Collection into an affiliate of the Smithsonian and an Official Project of Save Americas Treasures and has been widely recognized for his work in the arts and the community. In October of 2005, Mr. Rodriguez was a recipient of Bank America Charitable Foundation’s 2005 Local Hero Award.

The Harbor Conservatory offers training in music, dance and theater to youth primarily from East and Central Harlem. Skills are acquired through specific skill training, solo and ensemble performance, preparation for higher education, and coaching in professional career skills. In addition to receiving the most intensive and professional arts training, Harbor faculty provides students with one-on-one counseling, professional management and direction, advice about and preparations for auditions and competitions. Regularly, television and film producers, talent scouts, advertising agencies, and Broadway/Off-Broadway producers call upon the Conservatory to recruit talented youth. Whereas the Conservatory can prepare students with professional aspirations, most importantly, it helps those who do not pursue this direction gain the skills and confidence needed to succeed in education, employment and positive family and community life.
