CenTrak Announces Over 10 Years of Battery Life on RTLS Infrastructure

New Technology Provides Over 10 Years of Nonstop High Speed Performance.

Newtown, PA (PRWEB) May 5, 2010

CenTrak, a leading provider of Real Time Location Systems (RTLS) for tracking equipment and people in healthcare facilities, today announced it has enhanced its market leading battery powered components with advanced technology to increase battery life to more than 10 years. CenTrak’s RTLS infrastructure now combines this latest patented technology with a new dry battery cell to more than double battery life. All battery life figures assume the system is operating nonstop at a location update speed of 3 seconds.

“Aside from providing best in class location accuracy (http://centrak. com/Accuracy. aspx), CenTrak made its name as the leader in battery powered location devices that are easy to install, require no wiring, and offer extreme battery life with batteries that are easy to replace in the field. CenTrak battery swaps are easier then changing a light bulb and they happen much less frequently.” said Ari Naim, Ph. D., President and CEO of CenTrak. “With this technology breakthrough we are taking that ease of installation and maintenance and the peace of mind it brings to new heights. Facilities can now install CenTrak’s RTLS and not worry about battery replacement for a decade or longer”.

“We have been using CenTrak’s RTLS for over two years on the original set of batteries,” said Stephen DiGioia, Director – Technology Development for the Innovation Center at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC. “We are continually expanding the CenTrak network to track assets, patients and staff. While, the prior 5 year battery life was more than acceptable for our purposes, this technology enhancement takes the solution to a new level. With battery life in this range, the system can be viewed as totally maintenance free, for the life of the installation.”

CenTrak’s core RTLS differs from legacy technologies in its use of a patented combination of second-generation infrared (Gen2IR™) and active RFID technology called DualTrak (http://centrak. com/HowItWorks. aspx). Battery powered Monitors transmit a unique room number using Gen2IR which is received by any tag in that room. The tag communicates the room number and its own unique ID via RF to the CenTrak Location Server using a hospital’s existing wired or Wi-Fi network, where it can be accessed in real-time by hospital personnel and integrated with third party solution providers.

Like light, Gen2IR will not pass through walls and does not suffer from traditional infrared line-of-sight limitations. Therefore, when a tag reads a room number, there are no errors. This is certainty-based RTLS. Unlike estimation-based information, certainty-based location data can be used by hospitals to make important improvements to process flow and automate decision making. Most healthcare workflow improvements can only be realized when the location data is certainty-based.
