Obesity increases risks of diabetes; therefore, families can take advantage of learning how to cook healthy meals, through the cooking demonstrations being offered.
According to a recent survey conducted in North Lawndale and South Lawndale, reports show that over 35% of the overall residents have been diagnosed with Diabetes. Within this community, Diabetes mortality rates are the highest among Mexican-Americans. Saint Anthony Hospital sees over 200 diabetic patients a year.
According to Dr. Theo Sai, Medical Director, Esperanza, ÂWe recognize that Diabetes is a very crucial disease affecting our community. Esperanza and its relationships with partners like Stroger Hospital and many other community organizations, have taken efforts to raise awareness and educate the community on the severity of the disease. Our goal is to encourage the community to be involved and actively manage their disease by utilizing the health resources and professional services that are available. Focusing our attention to the most prevalent health problems affecting this community is our goal. This Diabetes campaign will focus on raising awareness, educating on the importance of disease management and linking people to the proper health resourcesÂ.
