Kitchen Kettle Village, located in the charming village of Intercourse, has developed three new Experiential Tours which will allow their visitors to roll up their sleeves and learn how to "can" and make jelly; sample authentic fare and revisit 50 years of Kitchen Kettle Village history and Pennsylvania Dutch heritage which all started in a one car garage; and teach visitors about nutrition and the importance of canning/preserving, a Lancaster County farm tradition.
"We are so excited to add experiential tours to our list of Village activities," stated Joanne Ladley, Synergy Conductor and Co-owner of Kitchen Kettle Village. "These tours will allow our new and existing visitors to explore our unique heritage, as well as our products and make them come to life for the tour participants."
The three tours are as follows:
1. A Taste of Kitchen Kettle Walking Tour: This tour is approximately 90 minutes in length and is a walking tour throughout Kitchen Kettle Village (best suited for ages 14 and above). The tour will take participants "Behind the Scenes" to get to know (and sometimes meet) the creative people who started a jelly business in their garage over 50 years ago. That business grew over three generations to a Village of 42 shops, a world famous Jam and Relish Kitchen, restaurants and guest rooms. The tour also includes a menu of Lancaster County products such as freshly baked cookies, corn chips and cheesy salsa, Kettle Korn and even some homemade coconut cream pie. Guests will get to go inside the canning kitchen and see local farm women making the "batch of the day" which is still made in small batches and hand stirred --guests will even get to take home a free jar of jam. The cost is only $20 per person and is available on Fridays at 9:30am (other days available for large groups by request). Group rates available.
2. Cannin' & Jammin' Tour: This tour offers a "hands-on immersion experience" which lasts approximately 60 minutes and allows participants to "roll up their sleeves" and get a "taste" of how to make jelly in our very own Jam and Relish Kitchen. The group will learn from local farm women about the time honored tradition of canning and how it remains a staple in the Lancaster County region. Guests will make (and take home) their very own jar of jelly and also learn how this small jelly making business grew into a Village with over 1 million visitors a year. The cost is only $20 per person and is available on Wednesdays at 3:00pm. Group rates available.
3. Savor the Flavor Challenge: This fast-paced, fun workshop is approximately 45 minutes and was specifically developed for student and adult groups. Participants will learn about nutrition, the importance of reading and understanding food labels, the history of the canning process and top off their experience with a friendly quiz that tests their knowledge along with a "tasty" challenge featuring our very own products. The cost for the tour is $7 per person with a 12 person minimum. Group rates available.
