Ochsner Health Systems Prepares for Future with New Anatomic Pathology Information System from PathView Systems
The healthcare environment has drastically changed in the New Orleans area over the past few years. Both, hurricane Katrina, and now, the BP oil spill have caused executives to focus on increased workflow efficiences. To accomplish the goal of quality care in such a challenging environment, Ocshner has implemented the Progeny laborary information system solution for their Anatomic Pathology and Cytology departments.

For a typical breast case there can be anywhere from 30 to 50 pieces of material that must be catalogued, handled, tracked, and analyzed. "We needed a system that could tell us where every single piece of material was at any time and we needed the system to do it in a manner that did not require extra work." After an extensive search and rigorous implementation, PathView's Progeny system was installed at the 5 hospitals of Ochsner Health Systems.
Implementation was challenging because at the same time we were implementing Progeny, we also brought online additional facilities. This meant that Progeny not only had to work well in facilities with extensive staffing resources, but it had to work just as well in those facilities where only one or two staff members would be available on a day to day basis. "Progeny really works well for us because we can see all aspects of a case in a single browser display and the rest of the system is so simple to use because all the functionality we routinely need is centralized in just a few screens."
Progeny is not only about getting results and information into the system. Physicians can now see both internal and consultation reports in the exact format in which they were originally created. "We cannot emphasize enough how important it is that the physician view reports in the same format that we pathologists have created."
The synchronization of results, detailed tracking, and ongoing support has provided Ochsner with the tools it needs to adapt to a dynamic future -- no mater what else may come its way.
