This new quit line is free and was announced at a press conference by Health and Human Resources Secretary Tommy G Thompson. The quit line is a nationwide toll-free number which lets individuals place a call, which is routed to a local cessation counselor. The counselor then individualizes services that are appropiate by making plans and schedules and providing information about the use of nicotine replacement therapy. The counselors can answer questions and inform callers about other local smoking cessation programs.

Secretary Tommy G. Thompson has set up this toll free number as a part of a broader initiative designed to help Americans quit smoking. You are probably aware of the facts that tobacco kills 440,000 American smokers each year. There are approximately 46 million US smokers. 70% of those smokers want to quit but have trouble doing it alone. Studies have shown that the quitlines can double or in some cases even triple the chances of successfully quitting smoking.
