Labor Day Celebrations Abound, American Workers Continue to Endure Unnecessary Health Risks

We have known about the dangers of asbestos for decades, yet working men and women are still exposed to these harmful minerals, needlessly putting lives at risk.

New York, NY (PRWEB) September 4, 2010 —

Labor Day is the day reserved for honoring and celebrating workers, but the day should also be a time to think about the health risks workers face from asbestos, says New York personal injury lawyer Joseph W. Belluck (http://www. belluckfox. com/joseph-belluck. html), of Belluck & Fox, LLP.

As we have done since 1882, on the first Monday of September we celebrate the social and economic achievements of the American worker. The labor of the American workforce is credited with giving our nation the highest standard of living and the highest level of production ever achieved by a society.

“Not only is Labor Day a time to pay tribute to workers, but the day is also the perfect time to highlight areas where we must work more diligently to protect workers,” says Belluck. “People are coming in contact with asbestos and they are not being protected,” he adds.

Though the dangers of these naturally occurring minerals known as asbestos (http://www. belluckfox. com/asbestos. html) are well-documented, asbestos is still not banned in the United States and is being shipped by Canadian mines all over the world. Construction workers often come in contact with asbestos when renovating or demolishing buildings. Custodial workers and maritime employees may be exposed at work, increasing their chances of developing mesothelioma, the deadly cancer that attacks the lining of the lungs.

“The tragedy is that we know the harmful effects of asbestos and still we watch as the number of mesothelioma cases continues to rise,” Belluck says.
