Steve and Krista Masula of eKaiserinsurance. com recently returned from a visit to Niger, West Africa. During the trip, they gained a vastly different perspective about health security and other health concerns than what they are accustomed to.
The health insurance team visited family member and former employee of eKaiserinsurance. com, Kelly Masula. She has spent the last two years living and working in a small village in Niger as a Community Health Agent for the Peace Corps. As the hottest and poorest country in the world, ranking 177 out of 177 countries in the 2006 United Nations Human Development Index, Niger presented a harsh reality for its western visitors, who describe the living situation as dire.
"I tried to see the positive in my surroundings, but I was repeatedly confronted with the destitute, the ragged clothing, the blind beggars, the polio victims scooting on the ground, the unsanitary conditions," said Krista Masula, licensed insurance broker with eKaiserinsurance. com. "Yet, despite a lacking environment, the people looked happy, the children had the most beautiful smiles; so that is where I turned my focus."
With statistics reflecting death for 25 percent of children under the age of five, and an adult life expectancy of a mere 42 years, Steven and Krista Masula offer a great deal of gratitude to such institutions such as Doctors Without Borders. They are a humanitarian emergency aid organization which has embarked on an ambitious action plan with an objective to treat 500,000 children suffering from acute malnutrition in the upcoming year. Steve and Krista made a monetary donation to Doctors Without Borders, hoping to bring better health care to Niger, while returning home to continue bringing better health care to California.
