While OTC Cough Remedies are Ineffective for Children, University Study Says Honey is “Significantly Better”
With new warnings that children under six years of age should not be given cough syrups, what is a parent to do when their child needs something that’s safe and that really works? In a study at Pennsylvania State University’s College of Medicine, researchers found that honey may hold the answer.

An FDA panel came to the conclusion that there is no benefit in more than 800 over the counter medicines to help young children. In fact, it was disclosed that many of the medicines for children, including cough syrups, could have serious side effects. In a study at Penn State University, doctors learned that honey was significantly superior to dextromethorphan (cough syrup) or no treatment at all on nighttime coughs and sleeping for children ages 2 and up.
With so many new warnings about most over-the-counter cough medicines for children, what’s a parent to do when his or her child needs something that’s safe and that really works? Getting back to the basics with Olbas Cough Syrup, made with pure wildflower honey, is a good place to start. This natural syrup, made with five herbal extracts and six essential oils, would appeal to most grandmothers, too, and has been time-tested around the world for decades.
The following study will shed some light on this perfect solution. In a study of 105 children age 2 to 18 – all who suffered with upper respiratory tract infections, researchers at Pennsylvania State University’s College of Medicine came up with a sweet, natural idea: Honey. They discovered that honey was significantly better than no treatment at all. Parents reported that their children slept much better after they took 1-2 teaspoons of honey. They added that this old folk remedy used throughout the centuries also appeared to reduce cough severity and frequency, though it is not considered safe for children under the age of one year.
Even the World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended honey as an effective cough remedy in their study featured in the December issue of Archives of Pediatric Adolescent Medicine, lead by author Ian M. Paul. Here’s what Paul says about the honey remedy. “It’s easily available, and pretty cheap. And it’s appealing for most people because it’s a natural remedy.”
While plain honey is effective by itself in soothing children’s coughs and assisting with sleep, there’s another natural remedy available that combines wildflower honey with natural herbal extracts that provide the added benefit of helping to strengthen healthy lung function. Olbas® Cough Syrup has proven to be effective for children and adults alike by offering soothing bronchial support.
According to Dr. Susan Smith Jones, “Olbas Cough Syrup is the only cough syrup I recommend in my private practice for children in need of a natural remedy for coughs, bronchial support, and immune enhancement that truly works. All of the children like the pleasant honey taste and their parents are pleased because of its efficacy. Through my decades of using this superb remedy, I have seen the effectiveness of this cough syrup from Switzerland. Besides quelling a cough, it also helps strengthen healthy lung function and supports the mucous membranes in the respiratory tract, promoting clean and healthy bronchial passages. Additionally, it provides natural antioxidants that support the immune system. In my book The Joy Factor: 10 Sacred Practices for Radiant Health, I have highly recommended Olbas Cough Syrup for both children and adults. It’s front and center in my natural remedy pantry and I would not be without it. In fact, one of my clients said the following about this easy-to-take remedy: ‘I am completely amazed at the effectiveness of Olbas cough syrup. I bought Olbas just to give it a try and have had 3 consecutive nights of uninterrupted sleep.’ I also use and recommend the Olbas Pastilles and sugar-free Lozenges to remedy throat tickles and coughing.”
A carefully selected blend of five herbal extracts, six essential oils and wildflower honey, Olbas Cough Syrup is great for the entire family – anyone over 12 months old. It contains the following natural herbal extracts:
Thyme has a variety of natural flavonoids that increase its antioxidant capacity, helping to support immune system function. Licorice contains glycyrrhizin, a glycoside that balances the normal production of mucus in the respiratory tract, maintaining healthy lung function. Plantain contains natural flavonoids that soothe and cleanse the bronchial area, supporting healthy breathing. Pine is recognized to be one of the most potent antioxidants, supporting immune system health. Horse Chestnut contains a saponin known as aescin, which promotes normal circulation and healthy bronchial activity.
Olbas Cough Syrup does not contain any artificial sweeteners, colors, preservatives, or animal ingredients. It is also gluten-free, cruelty-free and has a delicious flavor.
The line of Olbas remedies from Switzerland also includes the oil, inhaler, pastilles, sugar-free lozenges, herbal bath, instant herbal tea and analgesic salve. All are imported and distributed by Penn Herb Company, Ltd. Located in Philadelphia, PA.
