Statement of Need:
Developing and following an effective maintenance treatment plan is vital to achieving remission and long-term functional recovery in patients with schizophrenia. Critical to selecting optimal pharmacotherapy in support of long-term recovery is appropriate weighing of the benefits, risks, and complexity of the treatment regimen. Each of these elements can impact adherence to pharmacotherapy, which in turn can impact outcome. Rates of medication nonadherence in patients with schizophrenia range from 40-55%. Recent evidence suggests that disease - and patient-related characteristics can predict the extent of adherence and can be used to tailor behavioral interventions. New data also indicate that early response to antipsychotic medications can predict longer-term outcome, and may allow physicians to abandon ineffective medications earlier in favor or more appropriate options. In this neuroscienceCME Journal Club series, experts will review cutting-edge data related to efficacy and safety of atypical antipsychotics, approaches to improving medication adherence, and strategies for identifying early non-responders, all of which will impact long-term functional outcome in patients with schizophrenia.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this CE activity, participants should be able to:
Discuss the implications of differential efficacy and tolerability of antipsychotics on medication adherence. Identify targeted behavioral approaches to improving treatment adherence in patients with schizophrenia. Describe early predictors of response to antipsychotic medication in patients with schizophrenia.
