Dallas (Vocus) September 16, 2010
On Sept. 25, 2010, more than 25,000 pairs of feet are expected to take a walk towards curing Juvenile Diabetes. The Walk to Cure Diabetes (http://www. jdrfdallas. org/), a national effort by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), is held to raise both funds and awareness to support the three million Americans living with type 1 diabetes (http://www. jdrfdallas. org/living. html).
Making a first appearance as a Walk sponsor is skoopz (http://www. skoopznatural. com/)®, a new all-natural sweetener that entered the Texas market in late August. Made from a proprietary formula, skoopz is a combination of all-natural ingredients (http://www. skoopznatural. com/about1.html) providing consumers with a sweet, zero-calorie sugar alternative that also can be a part of a diabetic-friendly diet.
“Being a part of the Walk to Cure Diabetes is important for us, and we are honored that JDRF provided us with an opportunity to participate,” said James Highsmith, CEO of skoopz. “At skoopz we strive to promote healthy options. Watching your intake of sugar and carbohydrates is important for everyone, but maintaining that delicate balance is critical for diabetics. The glycemic index (http://www. skoopznatural. com/info. php)(GI) associated with skoopz qualifies as ‘low glycemic’ according to American Diabetes Association guidelines, making skoopz a viable sugar substitute for diabetics. Best of all, it tastes great.”
The Walk takes place Saturday, September 25, 2010 at Victory Plaza at the American Airlines Center. Registration begins at 7:30 a. m. with the 5K Walk beginning at 9:00 a. m.
Additional partners of the JDRF Dallas Chapter Walk to Cure Diabetes include, Texas Instruments, Lockton Companies, Ericsson, Texans Credit Union, Kroger, Coca-Cola, Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Bayer HealthCare and OmniPod. About JDRF
JDRF is the leader in research leading to a cure for type 1 diabetes in the world. It sets the global agenda for diabetes research, and is the largest charitable funder and advocate of diabetes science worldwide.
The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly, and can be fatal. Until a cure is found, people with type 1 diabetes have to test their blood sugar and give themselves insulin injections multiple times or use a pump – each day, every day of their lives. And even with that intensive care, insulin is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating complications, which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation.
Since its founding in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes, JDRF has awarded more than $1.4 billion to diabetes research, including more than $156 million in FY2008. In FY2008, the Foundation funded more than 1,000 centers, grants in laboratories, hospitals, and industry, and fellowships in 22 countries.
