Their property can eventually be replaced, but for so many their vital personal documents have likely been lost forever. A new product, MyPDS (My Personal Document System), can prevent this happening in the future.
Today’s technology makes it easy to enter and then encrypt information on a credit card size flash-drive. This is a simple, easy, and safe way to make sure that valuable personal information, as well as personal and business papers, are safely stored, transported and available. The unit also doubles as a functional solar calculator, disguising its true purpose. A small USB connector makes it easy to use with any computer.
MyPDS is a 1gb flash-drive that is encrypted using state-of-the-art 128-bit encryption software which no one but the rightful owner can access. Only by entering a user-defined password can the data and programs be accessed. When finished, the software once again encrypts the device, providing complete security for the information. Anyone looking at the drive will think there is no data at all on the device since the encryption totally hides it. Only when the owner needs the information does it become available.
Imagine this scenario:
A major hurricane approaches, your family flees, you get separated, and your mother cannot be found. Will you have a picture, her height, weight, blood type, social security number, doctor’s names, medical conditions, prescriptions, etc., available to help the authorities, if needed? You will - with MyPDS. Thousands would have given almost anything for just a picture of a missing loved one to give to the authorities for their search after the New Orleans disaster.
MyPDS contains data such as personal information such as next of kin, medical providers, medical conditions, prescriptions, financial data, emergency contacts and telephone numbers. Documents such as birth and death certificates, marriage licenses, conventional and living wills, health care and other powers of attorney, final instructions, insurance information, immunization records, business papers, household inventories, military papers, citizenship documents and precious family photographs can be scanned and saved and encrypted in the flash drive. This is easily done since most printers sold today have a scanning ability. If a scanner is not available, all it takes is one trip to an office supply store where the papers can all be scanned to a CD and later saved in the MyPDS flash-drive. Each category of information has its own folder for easy access.
This is a very serious tool for very serious situations and one that provides total security. And, if the device were lost, it would be completely useless to anyone except to use it as a calculator.
MyPDS is the brainchild of Richard Hill of Alachua, FL, who was moved while watching television interviews with the disaster victims and seeing pictures of so many searching through the debris of their homes. He came up with a way to put the documents that we both need and treasure into a secure device that would let anyone take such documents along in encrypted digital form during an evacuation. MyPDS is the result.
