Texas Career Civil Servant Looks Forward to New Career in Private Industry, While Inspiring the Next Generation of Woman
After more than 30 years of service to the State of Texas, career civil servant, Janet Hasty, is retiring today from her post as Purchasing Director with the State of Texas. During her career, Janet was responsible for the procurement of a wide range of goods and services. Several that most Texans would recognize include the "Don't Mess with Texas" Anti-Litter Campaign, and Internet vehicle registration system which allowed Texans to register their vehicles online and processes over a billion dollars annually.

After more than 30 years of service to the State of Texas, career civil servant, Janet Hasty, is retiring today from her post as Purchasing Director with the State of Texas. Janet began her career in 1977 as a File Clerk for the Texas Department of Transportation. Over the years, she has served as a Secretary, Purchasing Assistant, Purchaser, Purchasing Manager, and most recently as the Director of Purchasing, Contracting and Distribution Services. While working for the state, Janet received a masters degree from The University of Texas in Public Policy, and also holds a bachelor's degree in Public Administration. In addition, The National Institute of Governmental Purchasing certified Janet as a Public Purchasing Officer. She is also a certified Trainer through the Texas Builder and Procurement commission.
"As high school seniors graduate and start looking for that first job, Mrs. Hasty's example should encourage them. Janet started working for the state right out of high school, and built a successful and rewarding career with hard work and diligence. She took advantage of the great opportunities Texas offers their employees, and the state and its citizens have been the benefactor." The last 30 years has been highlighted by positions in several important state agencies including the Texas Building and Procurement Commission, Texas Department of Transportation, Department of State Health Services, and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. During her career, Janet was responsible for the procurement of a wide range of goods and services. Janet was not only responsible for the purchase of this system, but was also responsible for the development and implementation, which processes over a billion dollars annually.
Back in 2004, while working for Texas Building and Procurement Commission, Janet initiated a Brown Bag Lunch training series that still exists today providing monthly training opportunities for state purchasing professionals. Later, with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, as Purchasing Director, she completed a total re-write of the agency's Purchasing and Contracting Manual. "This just scratches the surface," says Ken Pinaire, Technical Instructor and UT Grad. "This state owes a lot to Janet and she is a true role model for my daughter and all Texas girls."
"It's been a long ride," says Janet, "but I've learned a lot and met a lot of great people along the way. I wouldn't have changed a day of it." Janet may be saying goodbye to a long career of public service, but she doesn't plan on letting those years of experience go to waste. Next month she'll be launching her own consulting business titled Government Procurement Services. Mrs. Hasty's goal is to help business navigate the complex bureaucratic landscape of government contracts.
