Connecticut-based non-profit: Planetree, the organization that has pioneered personalizing the healthcare experience for patients and their families, has been awarded top honors in the 2006 Annual Picker Institute Awards for Excellence in Patient Centered Care.

The award presentations, made in London, England on October 25, acknowledge individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to improving the lives of patients and their experiences of the healthcare system.

"We are honored by this recognition from the Picker Institute of both the many years of patient-centered work that Planetree has been involved in, and of the many pioneering hospitals that have joined us in truly putting the needs of patients first," said Planetree's President Susan Frampton.

Planetree won its award for excellence in recognition of the organization's pioneering work in advocating the concept of a patient-centered approach to the environments in which healthcare services are provided.

Founded in 1978 by a patient in San Francisco, Planetree is an internationally recognized leader in the growing movement to transform the health care experience by considering health care facilities, processes and protocols from the perspective of the patient. The Planetree model of delivering care is one that prioritizes patient comfort, dignity, empowerment and well-being. The Planetree Membership Network is comprised of over 100 hospitals, long-term care facilities, outpatient clinics, and health resource centers.

The Picker Institute is an independent non-profit organization that promotes the advancement of patient-centered care, and the improvement of patients' experiences and interactions with healthcare providers.

The Picker Institute's founder, Harvey Picker, said: "Our mission is to improve the healthcare provider's understanding of each patient's values, preferences and expressed needs. Through these awards, we recognize people whose work has provided outstanding advances toward our common mission."
