Hope for Haiti’s Children is calling for Albuqueruqe community members to support UNICEF’s emergency relief efforts in Haiti. Albuquerque, New Mexico - March 7th, 2010 – The Hope for Haiti’s Children Musical Concert, will take place at 6 PM, Sunday, March 7th, 2010, in the beautiful Kiva Auditorium at the Albuquerque Convention Center, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The concert combines performances by a number of national and international acclaimed artists: Janice Chandler Eteme who has long been among America’s foremost lyric sopranos, singing an astonishing range of music with the world’s top orchestras and conductors. The Hope for Haiti’s Children Musical Concert, will take place at 6 PM, Sunday, March 7th, 2010, in the beautiful Kiva Auditorium at the Albuquerque Convention Center, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The concert combines performances by a number of national and international acclaimed artists: Janice Chandler Eteme who has long been among America’s foremost lyric sopranos, singing an astonishing range of music with the world’s top orchestras and conductors. Violin virtuoso, Jaime Jorge, who was born in Cuba in 1970, and began violin studies at age five. When he was ten, Jaime's family immigrated to the United States and he began lessons with the eminent violinist Cyrus Forough, a student of the great David Oistrakh. “Jaime is not just a musician, he's an artist!” by Julio Voirin, Concert Violinist, Master Violin Maker & Luthier. “To hear Jaime play is to share a rich experience that only happens occasionally in one's life. The King's Heralds Quartet was founded in 1927. They've recorded over 100 albums in thirty different languages in a variety of musical styles, making them a favorite with audiences of all ages. The rich blend, harmony and balance of their a cappella style has been enjoyed not only the United States, but also in over 50 countries. Their audiences have included heads of state, governors, ambassadors and other dignitaries. The King's Heralds have received twenty-three Silver Angel Awards© for "Excellence in Media", including six for "Best Male Vocal Group", fourteen for "Best Album". The group also received a "Gold" Angel Award© for being the oldest continuous Gospel Quartet in America.
Organizers hope the Hope for Haiti’s Children Concert event will continue to raise the much needed funding and awareness for the plight of the children in Haiti. Our goal goes beyond building a database of donor names. Rather, we seek to join forces with those who are willing to belong to UNICEF’s movement to save children’s lives, those who may not only give, but who are willing to spread the word, advocate and drive awareness within their own communities about the threats facing children in Haiti and around the world.
“The children of Haiti need our help,” said Dr. Glenroy Heywood, MD, Event Host and Volunteer for the U. S. Fund for UNICEF. “I am simply doing my part as a volunteer and would like to ask others to join UNICEF in saving the lives of children in Haiti.”
Just before 5 pm, local time, on Tuesday, January 12, the region’s largest earthquake in modern history devastated Haiti. The epicenter was located just a few miles from its heavily-populated capital of Port-au-Prince. More than 3 million people have been affected by the disaster – half of them are children.
UNICEF is deploying necessary supplies to Jacmel and Port au Prince as quickly as possible to assist with recovery efforts including clean water and sanitation, therapeutic foods, medical supplies and temporary shelter. Clean water and sanitation are the highest priority interventions in emergency situations. UNICEF will also focus on children who have become separated from their families to protect them from harm or exploitation. UNICEF focuses on these children and their families—and on the essential interventions required to save lives and to ensure the rights and safety of all children.
Haiti is the poorest nation in the western hemisphere and has a population of 9.6 million inhabitants, of which 46% of the population is under age 18. UNICEF has been working in Haiti since 1949 and works directly with Haiti's government on developing long term solutions to current problems caused by poverty and lack of basic health care, education and sanitation services.
UNICEF has saved more children’s lives than any other humanitarian organization in the world. Working in over 150 countries, UNICEF provides children with health care, clean water, nutrition, education, emergency relief, and more. The U. S. Fund for UNICEF supports UNICEF’s work through fundraising, advocacy, and education in the United States.
UNICEF is at the forefront of efforts to reduce child mortality worldwide. There has been substantial progress—the annual number of under-five deaths dropped from 13 million in 1990 to 8.8 million in 2008. But still, 24,000 children die each day from preventable causes. Our mission is to do whatever it takes to make that number zero by giving children the essentials for a safe and healthy childhood.
