New Treatment for Varicose Veins Promises a Sensational New Look

So, what are two cardiac surgeons doing when they opened a new vein treatment center in the suburbs of Buffalo? The two surgeons are looking at incorporating new techniques for the treatment of varicose veins to their surgical practice.
Dr. Hratch Karamanoukian and Leon Levinsky have established the Vein Treatment Center in Williamsville, NY "because of a need that was relayed to them by (their) patients," said Dr. Karamanoukian, who is the Director of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery and Robotic Heart Surgery in the regions' largest health care system, Kaleida Health. "The patients asked us to provide this service, as no one in the area was delivering comprehensive vein care to the community."
Dr. levinsky stated that a recent study about the VNUS Closure system has developed a significant interest in the community for vein care.
Radio frequency obliteration of the saphenous veins has been introduced as a less invasive alternative to traditional surgery for varicose veins. A group of investigators, the 'VNUS Closure Group' has published their clinical outcomes to determine the efficacy of endovenous obliteration of the saphenous vein for venous insufficiency with three years follow-up.
The study, performed in 330 lower extremites of 294 patients was performed in a prospective manner worldwide. The authors concluded from this landmark study that radiofrequency saphenous vein obliteration improves the symptoms of varicose veins and that reflux-free rates in the treated veins remain constant over a 3 year follow-up period.
Studies like this have shown efficacy of radiofrequency obliteration of the saphenous vein for reflux disease causing varicosities in the legs.
Drs. Karamanoukian and Levinsky are developing a larger center to deliver Total Vein Care to their patients, moving to a 4,000 square foot facility in the georgetown Plaza in Williamsville, NY.
