Vince Lombardi said, “Winning isn’t everything - it’s the only thing.” That’s the way our society sees competition – you win, or you’re a loser. A loser is a hopeless waste of space and a failure.

We need to rethink the importance our society puts on winning when we see:

A youth baseball draft system run by father coaches who rank 8-year-olds and then have a competitive selection process: all jockeying to make sure they don’t end up with a certain ‘loser’ (who might only be slow to develop). 

Fans of college teams who are depressed when their NCAA team fails to make the sweet 16.

Fans of soccer teams who storm the fields, causing injury and death of other fans.

Parents who push and pressure their children excessively to make them excel at a sport.

We have been taught the importance of winning at the office, in business, on the sports fields, at our schools and in bed. Our society has created businesses that are focused only on the bottom line, people who push to win at all costs, and individuals who judge themselves and others by whether they win or not.

Our children are pressured to be winners in sports, to be popular in school, and to compete to achieve the best grades. They are pressured by peers, parents and educators – and if they fail, they see themselves as losers – and the pressure builds.

We are never taught to appreciate the whole picture. We need to lose, to appreciate the wins, to learn what works, and to grow. Losing makes us strong.

Cheryl Perlitz, life change expert and author of Soaring Through Setbacks, Rise Above Adversity and Reclaim Your Life, offers inspiring tips to help us teach our youth, and remind ourselves, to put winning and losing in healthy perspective.

As parents, grandparents, educators, health care professionals and friends we must:

*Lighten up and look at losses as part of life and not personal failures.

*Emphasize the effort involved, not winning and losing.

*Play together as a family or with other families and friends in a casual way, with no winners and losers.

*Not force a child to participate in a skill activity they have no interest in, even though you might be.

*Always emphasize the importance of having fun in extra-curricular activities.

*Not let them quit until their commitment to the activity is completed, or they will learn to give up when things don’t go their way

*Help them to set their own personal goals so they can learn one step at a time. Teach them to learn success by earning it with hard work.

*Teach them that winning isn’t everything.

*Get them involved in things that aren’t competitive.

*Introduce them to multiple activities involving a variety of skills.

*Discuss behavior of coaches, other parents, and other children honestly with your children – emphasizing your family values.

*Not ask repeatedly - “How did you do?”, “Did you win?”, “How did the other guy do?” “Did you hit a homerun?”, “How did you play?” All of those questions put too much emphasis on competition.

*Not go to every practice and hover. Go to the events and support your children, but hovering puts too much importance on the activity.

*Show equal interest in the activities of all of your children.

*Watch how you project your enthusiasm for a sport to your children. Children want affirmation from adults and if they are not interested or accomplished in the same thing they will feel like they have failed you. 

*Encourage them to have friends who are interested in other things so they see the value of diversity in their life.

*Tell them you love them no matter what – over and over again.

According to the group, "A specific type of drywall called Knauf Plasterboard Tianjin Co. Ltd., is one of the major manufacturers in the federal Chinese drywall litigation. The company has made a one-time offer to homeowners who sign up for the omnibus class action by January 15th, and show pictures or other proof that they have KPT drywall in their homes so they won't have to pay $15,000 to serve the company in China through the Hague Convention, according to an order issued by U. S. District Court Judge Eldon Fallon.

It's official: Nationals Park is the nation's greenest ballpark. The project received LEED® Silver Certification from the U. S. Green Building Council, making it the first major stadium in the United States to achieve LEED Certification. "Creating a green ballpark was as fundamental as any requirement when we decided to embark on this mission to build a new state of the art stadium for the Washington Nationals," said DC Sports and Entertainment Commission CEO Gregory A. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a rating system that was designed by the U. S. Green Building Council (USGBC) to guide and distinguish high performance buildings that have less of an impact on the environment, are healthier for those who use the building and are more profitable than their conventional counterparts.

The USGBC originally created the LEED Certification process to promote environmentally responsible design in such buildings as offices, schools and hospitals. Design firm HOK managed the LEED Certification process.

"Beginning with Camden Yards 15 years ago, HOK Sport has been known for its innovation in ballpark design," said Joe Spear, HOK Sport principal. "And because the design team had to literally forge a new path in designing a green ballpark, it has proven its innovative ways once again."

Set near the Anacostia River, the ballpark's site dictated much of the approach to LEED Certification. The ballpark rests on soil that once was contaminated. That soil was treated and replaced. Also, six massive sand filters buried underground will keep ballpark washdown water, hot dog wrappers and other debris from polluting the river nearby. The ballpark also neighbors a variety of public transportation options, including rail, bike and bus routes.

"HOK worked closely with the USGBC to find creative ways to incorporate environmentally friendly design concepts," said Susan Klumpp, HOK's project manager and LEED program manager.

The ballpark received 34 points toward LEED Certification for such green design elements as:
 Using high efficiency field lighting, which will save 21 percent over typical field lighting.  Installing water conserving plumbing fixtures, which will save 3.6 million gallons of water per year and reduce overall water consumption by 30 percent.  Using air-cooled chillers instead of water-cooled chillers will save another 6 million gallons of water per year.  Placing 100 recycling bins for fan use throughout the ballpark.  Using recycled materials in 20 percent of the ballpark's construction, and recycling 5,500 tons of construction waste.  Planting a 6,300 square foot green roof above a concession/toilet area beyond left field to collect rain water and minimize roof heat gain.  Creating signage around the ballpark highlighting the ballpark's environmentally friendly aspects.

"The Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) new policy about bio-identical hormones could potentially deny hundreds of thousands of women access to bio-identical hormone therapy," urges C. W. Randolph, Jr., M. D., R. Ph, one of the nation's leading bio-identical hormone physicians, and Genie James, M. M.Sc., his co-founder of The Natural Hormone Institute of America. "We want people to know that this is an egregious example of a multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical giant (Wyeth) wielding financial and political power in an effort to regain an eroding market share and female healthcare consumer trust."

Last week, the FDA announced that there's no evidence that "bio-identical" hormones therapies (BHRT) mixed by individual pharmacists are any safer than prescription hormones made by drug companies such as Wyeth. They warned seven pharmacy operations about misleading safety and effectiveness claims of BHRT products. The FDA stopped short of taking immediate action to stop the practice of mixing hormones or compounding them by individual pharmacists as Wyeth has sought since it filed a petition with them in 2005.

Dr. Randolph, who is the best selling author of "From Hormone Hell to Hormone Well" and "From Belly Fat to Belly Flat," originally practiced as a compounding pharmacist before returning to medical school. He established his OB/GYN practice in Jacksonville, Florida in 1986 and - like most physicians at that time - prescribed synthetic hormone therapies such as Premarin, Provera and later Prempro. Dr. Randolph stopped prescribing these pharmaceutically manufactured synthetic hormones because of the side effects experienced by his patients.

"Long before the output of the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) validated the health risks associated with synthetic hormone replacement [such as an increased risk of breast and uterine cancers, heart attack, stroke and increased risk of dementia] I was concerned," says Dr. Randolph. "I drew on my background as a compounding pharmacist to research safe and effective alternatives. For more than a decade, I have prescribed bio-identical hormone therapies (BHRT) for literally tens of thousands of patients. Not only do my patients report that they 'feel like themselves again', they also remain side effect free. My clinical experience validates the medical research substantiating the safety and efficacy of BHRT." 

Why is the FDA attacking BHRT? "Money, politics and power," Ms. James, the co-author of Dr. Randolph's books, responds. "There are currently close to 38 million women in the U. S. entering pre-menopause or menopause. This is a huge market. When the results of the WHI study were first released in 2002, the sales of synthetic hormone therapies dropped almost 50% immediately. It is worth noting that synthetic hormone formulations are patentable. Bio-identical formulations can not be patented because their molecular structure originates in nature, e. g. the human body."

"The issue here is not the safety of women who are choosing BHRT as their treatment of choice for menopausal and pre-menopausal symptoms, it is dollars. Wyeth's financial reports, which are available online at www. wyeth. com, suggest an ongoing and significant decline in the sales of the Premarin synthetic hormone family of products; e. g. from over $2 billion in 2002 to $880 million in 2004; a 68% decline in sales."

"Many women who stopped taking synthetic hormones therapies began to do their homework and research alternatives," continues Ms. James. "The result is that in the last five years there has been a significant upsurge of women choosing (and physicians prescribing) BHRT as an effective alternative that is formulated to match the structure found in the human body, a common practice in other medical treatment areas such as in the treatment of the thyroid.. No wonder Wyeth is worried. And, for anyone doubting the influence that a multi-billion pharmaceutical company might have on a government regulated agency such as the FDA, I would suggest that they read the book by Marcia Angel, M. D. (former editor in chief of The New England Journal of Medicine) The Truth About Drug Companies: How They Deceive Us and What To Do About It."

Last week, when the FDA issued the warning to compounding pharmacies across the nation, they stated that they should halt the compounding of medications containing estriol. "The FDA is way out of bounds here," says Dr. Randolph. "Like many commonly prescribed drugs (e. g, Phenobarbital, quinine, tinidazole), estriol has a monograph from the U. S. Pharmacopeia (USP), but is not currently a component of an FDA-approved drug. When it passed the FDA Modernization Act in 1997, Congress clearly indicated that drugs with a USP monograph could be compounded. In addition, the practice of medicine and pharmacy is legislated at the state level. The FDA officially does not have jurisdiction in this area."

"As Ms. James stated, the fundamental issue at stake is much more critical," says Randolph. "The larger issue is the health and well being of millions of American women who, with their physicians, want safe and effective hormone replacement therapy. The big pharmaceutical muscles are working to do away with BHRT, despite medical studies and clinical evidence validating it as a safe and effective solution for women suffering from symptoms of hormone imbalance."

"There is now real data linking a decreased incidence in U. S. breast cancers with a decrease in the number of prescriptions written for synthetic hormone therapies. Now think about this: during these same years, we have seen lock-step increases in the number of prescriptions written for BHRT. Why isn't the government funding a study examining the inverse relationship between the rise in the popularity and use of BHRT and the decline in the incidence of breast cancer?" asks Ms. James.

“With the Fourth of July holiday coming up, the cast and crew of ‘In Your Dreams,’ including myself personally, urges the Broadway entertainment community, and the entertainment community nationwide, to speak up on behalf of this proposal for the creation of a Department of Peace -– a proposal that currently has the support of 71a members of the U. S. House of Representatives, and two members of the U. S. Senate, and has additionally been supported by resolutions of the city councils of Atlanta and San Jose, among others.

“The Department of Peace legislation -- House Resolution 3760, Senate Resolution 1756, the 'Department of Peace and Nonviolence Act' -- would allocate $10 billion, the equivalent of just 2 percent of the national defense budget, to establish a Department of Peace. It would include a cabinet level adviser to the president and a Peace Academy similar to West Point, where students could learn conflict resolution techniques to deal with issues ranging from war to prison rehabilitation and bullying in schools.

“This effort is part of an international effort to establish departments of peace in other countries has caught on in Australia, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom and Costa Rica.

"Surveys conducted in other countries of the world -- such as France, Denmark and England -- show that people in those countries believe that America is currently the Number One threat to the future stability of the globe -- putting us even ahead of Iran as a threat to peace. The creation of a Department of Peace would serve to reassure people in other countries of America’s true desire for peace.

"In conclusion, the cast and crew of 'In Your Dreams' wishes you all a happy, healthy and safe Fourth of July holiday – and we hope to hear you all speaking out in support of this important issue this coming July Fourth, our nation’s latest birthday.”
