The Laurence Olivier Awards, presented annually by the Society of London Theatre, are the UK's most prestigious theatre awards and the highlight of the West End calendar. The Awards were established in 1976 to recognise excellence in London theatre and have now become Theatreland’s most glamorous event. This year’s awards, which took place on February 26th were no exception: Billy Elliot took the prize for Best New Musical, while Guys and Dolls was awarded Outstanding Musical Production. Catch both winning shows with Superbreak http://www. superbreak. com (http://www. superbreak. com) and see what made them the toast of London!
Billy Elliot, based on the film of the same name, follows a teenage boy in a northern-English mining community who takes a liking to ballet, despite his father’s objections. With encouragement from his dance teacher Mrs Wilkinson, Billy auditions for the Royal Ballet School and finally sees a way to lead a life without the struggles that his father and brother have to endure. Directed by Stephen Daldry, the show has music by Elton John and choreography by Peter Darling.
Guys and Dolls is the West End’s first new production of Loesser and Burrow’s classic musical in 23 years. The plot follows lovable gangster-types Nathan Detroit and Sky Masterson as one tries to organise a crap game and the other attempts to win $1,000 by seducing Salvation Army Captain Sarah Brown. Directed by Michael Grandage, the original cast featured Ewan McGregor and Jane Krawkowski.
