Most people think of their dentists twice per year, at each cleaning, and would prefer to keep it that way. However, dental health calls for ongoing attention to good oral hygiene - something that is most likely to happen when people acquire good habits in dental care at an early age. National Children's Dental Health Month this coming February is a good opportunity to focus attention on this health issue, and Dr. Kim Loos of San Jose, California (www. drloos. com) will be leading the effort with educational and fun presentations to kindergarteners and first graders in the San Jose area.
One of the topics that Dr. Loos will discuss is the first visit to the dentist. While most children have already been to the dentist by age five or six, a few have not -- and may be too shy to admit it. Dr. Loos will show a short cartoon that explains visits to the dentist and have a show and tell session where she passes around materials from her office. This will hopefully get children more comfortable with going to dental offices.
"Many adults I treat talk about bad experiences at the dentist when they were children," Dr. Loos explains. "This can lead to fear of the dentist in adulthood. We strive to create good experiences for children in our office. I thought that going to the schools could help cultivate a positive attitude about the dentist."
Topics Dr. Loos will discuss will include how cavities arise and proper tooth brushing techniques, which she demonstrates with a large, loveable puppet. She hopes that her outreach will assist families' dental health and instill good habits in children that can benefit them in the long run. The initial roster for her visit includes the Lowell, De Vargas and Carlton Elementary schools.
"Oral health is so important, especially since we are discovering so many links between the state of our oral health and how it affects our general health," Dr. Loos said. She adds, "I want the children to learn at an early age the importance of taking care of their teeth, and this is something over which they have some control. Kids love that. I have had several parents tell me their children finally started flossing after we had visited their classroom."
