Nokia, Technopolis and Tekes today unveiled the Nokia Technopolis Innovation Mill, a ground breaking initiative to recycle Nokia's unused ideas and innovations to selected Finnish ICT companies for further development and exploitation. Prepared and launched in cooperation with several Finnish cities, the initiative aims to match ideas with companies that will be able to develop them into world-class products and services.

Nokia's research and development efforts produce massive amounts of new mobile innovations. Only a fraction of the ideas and concepts finally make it in the market as part of Nokia's offering. Consequently, over the years, thousands of potentially successful innovations have been shelved.

This unique initiative to recycle innovations stems from the founding organizations' commitment to strengthen the Finnish ICT sector and generate new, internationally competitive businesses. The investments in the development projects to be launched as part of the Nokia Technopolis Innovation Mill are expected to total up to 8 Million Euros, including 4.5 Million Euros of public funding.

The three-year initiative is a joint effort by Nokia, Technopolis, Tekes and several Finnish cities. Tekes, the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation, has granted a significant amount of the public funding. Technopolis, one of Europe's largest science and technology park chains, will coordinate the initiative and provide business development services to support and enhance the funding effort. The participating cities add to the funding with the aim of boosting the ICT sector in their regions.

In the healthcare industry physicians and hospitals are reimbursed by private insurance companies and Medicare with codes that identify the procedures performed and the reasons, or diagnosis, why those procedures were needed. These CPT and ICD-9 codes can be very complex. An additional 120,000 diagnosis codes will be added in 2013 with the implementation of ICD-10.

'With Healthcare Reform just around the corner we are going to need more and more medical coders helping physicians meet all the new coding requirements,' said Manny Oliverez, Director of Operations for Capture Billing. Pearson partnered with nonprofits ranging from groups serving at-risk youth to the food bank and a local animal shelter. River City Pearson employees volunteered hours for numerous community events and activities, such as mentoring elementary students and working with the Special Olympics, the Greater San Antonio Food Bank and more.

-- Home Comforts, Inc.: This small organization will be able to provide even more basic home comforts to help ease stress and anxiety of psychiatric patients who are transitioning into independent living.

-- San Antonio OASIS: Support for OASIS' tutoring program will help even more San Antonio children develop a love of reading and communication.

-- Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children: More educational opportunities will be made available for children at Sunshine Cottage, one of three auditory oral schools in Texas and the only one that goes beyond first grade, as a result of this grant from Pearson.

On the evening of July 23, 2010, Washington Parks & People (WPP) and the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) celebrated national Park and Recreation Month with Our Eyes East, an exhibit showcasing photos and stories about Marvin Gaye Park, and the health and lives of residents in the “East of the River” Ward 7 community of Washington, D. C. The event featured images and interviews taken from 20 youth and adult participants, who documented their lived experiences in and around Marvin Gaye Park during a one-month period in the spring of 2010. The participants used the parks theme as a central vehicle to raise awareness of the issues faced by underserved populations in D. C., and promote community change.

The Our Eyes East event was held in celebration of a decade of revitalization at Marvin Gaye Park, as well as the one-year anniversary of the installation of a new playground through Parks Build Community—an ongoing collaboration between NRPA, WPP, George Mason University and the District of Columbia. The collaboration seeks to increase the physical activity and health of the area’s young people, and increase the connection between the local citizens and the community.

“There is really a powerful story to be told here,” said WPP President Steve Coleman. “It’s truly moving to see what kids can do…what people can do…what communities can do, when we come together in parks.”

“I think the Our Eyes East project has made people look at the park differently,” said Dr. Autumn Saxton-Ross, assistant director for health in parks for WPP, and Our Eyes East project manager. “It reintroduced the kids to what you should be doing in a park…to just come and hang out—that is something that they were not used to doing.”

Some project participants presented photos and essays with themes such as powerlessness, drugs and violence. For example, the essay for a photo by 12-year-old Max Bryant, displaying a used needle on the ground, stated, “I don't like the drug addicts and violence in my community. When I look at my photo, I feel pain and sadness."

“I see our children in trouble and things do not seem to be getting…better,” wrote Raquel Ifill, a 16-year resident of the area. “You know, change is around us, but the people are still kind of bound.”

Other photos and essays intertwined themes of hope and beauty, such as 6-year-old Terrance “Pooka” Morton’s photo of a green swirl of grass. “This photo is expressing growth. This photo relates to my community because there are many green spaces,” Pooka wrote. 

In another photo by 10-year-old Erin Bryant, a woman and a child are eating together on a blanket.

The woman is smiling down at the child. “This picture is great, because two people, a mom and a daughter, are coming back to the park and picnicking like it used to be. There were changes that day because someone was brave enough to have a picnic in the park,” wrote Erin.

During the event, NRPA CEO Barbara Tulipane made a special address to the children in the crowd, and thanked them for taking good care of the park over the year. “Everything you do here is so important, and we are telling your story to people across the U. S.,” said Tulipane.

She added, “For me, Parks Build Community and projects like Our Eyes East are about bringing this community together. When the community comes together, everything else sort of falls in place…but it has to start there.”

Also featured during the evening were a community break dance session and a performance by the Batala Washington Percussion Band.

On October 19, 2009, Baptist Medical Center's Emergency Department will begin using a new procedure, called therapeutic hypothermia, to increase a patient's chances of survival after their heart has stopped (cardiac arrest).

On October 19, 2009, Baptist Medical Center's Emergency Department will begin using a new procedure, called therapeutic hypothermia, to increase a patient's chances of survival after their heart has stopped (cardiac arrest).

The new procedure involves decreasing the core body temperature to 89ºF after the patient's heart has been restarted. Cooling may be started by paramedics if they have been able to restart the heart prior to getting the patient to the hospital. This involves injecting a patient with chilled intravenous (IV) fluids. Portable iceboxes (coolers) will be on ambulances to cool down the IV fluids. Upon further stabilization at Baptist's emergency room, the patient then undergoes placement of a specialized cooling catheter into a large vein in the chest and abdomen, which safely cools them down to 89º.

Baptist Emergency Department Medical Director Eric Zoog, MD said, "The American Heart Association has recommended therapeutic hypothermia following resuscitation from cardiac arrest, because the treatment has been shown to significantly improve a patient's chances of survival without brain damage."

He added that Baptist has already used this technique on one patient utilizing chilled water blankets in direct contact with the patient's skin, which enabled the patient to return to the same quality of life he had prior to his heart attack. "This treatment allows us to reduce the impact of a heart attack on a patient's body and increase their chance of survival once they get to the hospital."

Brain injury, heart dysfunction, systemic inflammation and the underlying disease that caused the cardiac arrest all contribute to the high death rate of patients who initially have their pulse re-started. Collectively, these symptoms are known as post-cardiac arrest syndrome.

This treatment method is able to increase not only a patient's chances of survival, but survival with normal or nearly normal brain function by a factor of 2.5. In fact, every sixth time a cardiac arrest patient is treated with therapeutic hypothermia, physicians can rescue one life.

Baptist and its ER physicians will make a donation of iceboxes (coolers) to American Medical Response on October 5, 2009, at 2:00 pm in the Baptist Cardiovascular Center.

"This is the only therapy that nearly triples the rate of survival after cardiac arrest," Dr. Zoog said. " Strides like this have not been made with cardiac arrest in over 30 years - since the invention of CPR."

Baptist is the only hospital in the Metro Jackson area with Chest Pain Accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers.
