Operation Bootcamp announced today its franchise opportunity for becoming part of its unique program that improves people's lives by increasing their fitness, building their confidence and fostering healthy eating habits. Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) June 14, 2007

Operation Bootcamp announced today its franchise opportunity for becoming part of its unique program that improves people's lives by increasing their fitness, building their confidence and fostering healthy eating habits. The Operation Bootcamp franchises will allow consumers across the country to exceed their personal fitness goals within the supportive and respectful environment created within each of the boot camps. In 2006, Operation Bootcamp became the largest bootcamp program of its kind in the country.

"We have been tremendously successful with our programs in Atlanta and are excited about the opportunity for consumers in other cities to experience our boot camps first-hand," said Heidi Ziegele, owner of Atlanta Kick and founder of Operation Boot Camp. "We have spent the last seven years refining our program to offer intense workouts, while at the same time providing motivation, positive reinforcement, education and fun. Our program aims to not only improve each of our boot campers, but to give back to the community through partnership with the local parks and greenspaces."

Operation Bootcamp came about more than six years ago with an ex-army veteran's desire to get into military "boot camp shape". Operation Bootcamp was created to have the intensity of a military boot camp, with the ideals of positive reinforcement and fun. Operation Bootcamp does this while catering to people of all starting fitness levels, from elite athletes to the those that have not exercised in years. Operation Bootcamp combines co-ed outdoor workouts, a nutrition regimen and constant accountability in order to challenge -- and surpass -- the boundaries of every boot camper's comfort zone. The results are life-changing: a fit, toned body, increased self-confidence and improved strength and endurance.

The Operation Bootcamp franchise program provides all of the owner and instructor training, operations methods, marketing tools, back-office and Web services, and other support needed to launch and grow a successful program. Operation Bootcamp currently runs camps throughout Atlanta and expects locations in seven new cities in the next few months.

About Operation Bootcamp
Since 2000, Operation Bootcamp has been helping thousands of Atlantans get in shape and adopt a healthy lifestyle. The largest program of its kind, this intense 30-day program delivers quick "boot camp" results, and people of all fitness levels are accommodated. The instructor team is focused on helping people build positive attitudes, break through mental barriers and create new healthy habits. For more information visit www. operationbootcamp. com

Even a Small Dietary Reduction in Salt Could Mean Fewer Heart Attacks, Strokes and Deaths

Even a Small Dietary Reduction in Salt Could Mean Fewer Heart Attacks, Strokes and Deaths

Reducing salt in the American diet by as little as one-half teaspoon (or three grams) per day could prevent nearly 100,000 heart attacks and 92,000 deaths each year, according to a new study. Such benefits are on par with the benefits from reductions in smoking and could save the United States about $24 billion in healthcare costs, the researchers add.

San Francisco, CA (Vocus) January 21, 2010

Reducing salt in the American diet by as little as one-half teaspoon (or three grams) per day could prevent nearly 100,000 heart attacks and 92,000 deaths each year, according to a new study. Such benefits are on par with the benefits from reductions in smoking and could save the United States about $24 billion in healthcare costs, the researchers add.

A team from the University of California, San Francisco, Stanford University Medical Center and Columbia University Medical Center conducted the study. The findings appear January 20 in online publication by the New England Journal of Medicine and also will be reported in the February 18 print issue of the journal.

The team’s results were derived from the Coronary Heart Disease Policy Model, a computer simulation of heart disease among U. S. adults that has been used by researchers to project benefits from public health interventions.

“A very modest decrease in the amount of salt, hardly detectable in the taste of food, can have dramatic health benefits for the U. S.,” said Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo, PhD, MD, lead author of the study, UCSF associate professor of medicine and epidemiology and the co-director of the UCSF Center for Vulnerable Populations at San Francisco General Hospital.

“It was a surprise to see the magnitude of the impact on the population, given the small reductions in salt that we were modeling,” Bibbins-Domingo added.

The CHD Policy Model found that reducing dietary salt by three grams per day (about 1200 mg of sodium) would result in 11 percent fewer cases of new heart disease, 13 percent fewer heart attacks, 8 percent fewer strokes, and 4 percent fewer deaths. For African Americans, who researchers believe are more likely to have high blood pressure and may be more sensitive to salt, this degree of salt reduction could reduce new cases of heart disease by 16 percent and heart attacks by 19 percent.

“Reducing dietary salt is one of those rare interventions that has a huge health benefit and actually saves large amounts of money. At a time when so much public debate has focused on the costs of health care for the sick, here is a simple remedy, already proven to be feasible in other countries,” said Lee Goldman, MD, MPH, senior author, executive vice president for health and biomedical sciences and dean of the faculties of health sciences and medicine at Columbia University.

The American Heart Association reports that salt consumption among Americans has risen by 50 percent and blood pressure has risen by nearly the same amount since the 1970s - despite evidence linking salt intake to high blood pressure and heart disease.

“In addition to its independent benefits on blood pressure, reducing salt intake can enhance the effects of most anti-hypertensive (blood pressure lowering) agents and reduce complications associated with diabetes, obesity and kidney disease,” said Glenn M. Chertow, MD, study co-author, professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Nephrology at Stanford University.

According to federal government data, the average American man consumes more than10 grams of salt (4000 mg sodium) daily. Most health organizations recommend far lower targets - no more than 5.8 grams of salt per day (2300 mg sodium) and less than 3.8 grams for those over 40. Each gram of salt contains 0.4 grams of sodium.

“It’s clear that we need to lower salt intake, but individuals find it hard to make substantial cuts because most salt comes from processed foods, not from the salt shaker,” Bibbins-Domingo said. “Our study suggests that the food industry and those who regulate it could contribute substantially to the health of the nation by achieving even small reductions in the amount of salt in these processed foods.”

The New York City Department of Public Health and other state and local municipalities nationally have seen salt as an important target for regulation. Mayor Michael Bloomberg has already made sweeping changes to the City’s health regulations, including cutting trans fats in eating places and requiring fast-food restaurant menus to list calories. Now the city is seeking to join a national movement in cutting salt intake by 25 percent, which he referenced in today’s State of the City address.

“Our projects suggest that these regulatory efforts could both improve health and save money because of the healthcare costs avoided,” said Bibbins-Domingo. “For every dollar spent in regulating salt, anywhere from seven to 76 healthcare dollars could be saved.”

Additional authors include Pamela G. Coxson, PhD; James M. Lightwood, PhD, and Mark J. Pletcher, MD, all of UCSF, and Andrew Moran, MD, Columbia. The study was funded in part by a grant from the American Heart Association Western States Affiliate and a pilot grant from the UCSF Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute.

Everyone is a Winner: "Say No To Drugs Race" Crossed the Finish Line A Success

Everyone is a Winner: "Say No To Drugs Race" Crossed the Finish Line A Success

Tampa Bay’s 17th Annual "Say No To Drugs Holiday Classic Race" was a success with the highest ever number of registered runners this year.

Clearwater, FL (PRWEB) December 23, 2005

The New Memorial Causeway Bridge had its first ever 5K/10K race over its span this past Saturday (Dec 17th, 2005) with the ‘Say No to Drugs Holiday Classic’. Nearly 700 runners registered to race this year bumping this race up to a new level, making it truly a holiday tradition among the 100+ races in the Tampa Bay community each year. Over 100 of the Clearwater Community Volunteers came together to make this a memorable event for the Tampa Bay Community who worked side by side with the race’s sponsors: Starbucks Coffee, Jamba Juice, Sweet Tomatoes, Einstein Bros’ Bagels, Boston Bill Sunglasses, PostcardMania and many more. Afterwards, the $1000.00 purse was distributed to the top runners including John Emerson of Brooksville, Maria Ghizzoni of St. Pete, Lee Stephens of Temple Terrace, Christa Benton of St. Pete, Keith Sawayda of Clearwater, Dana Parrot of Tampa, Ray Chumbley of Port Charlotte, Jacki Wachtel of Tarpon Springs, Dan French of Brooksville and Beth Old of St. Petersburg.

Even though this year was the race’s 17th year, this was the first year to run over the New Memorial Causeway Bridge. The awards pancake breakfast was also in a new location at the historical Fort Harrison Hotel where all the runners and their families partook in the pancake breakfast. Nature’s Food Patch was one of the many sponsors that donated fresh spelt berries for the volunteers to grind into pancake batter making the melt-in-your-mouth-watering treats the runners all raved about. “I have to say it was a first-class event;” claimed Stephanie Corbo, owner of American Running Company in Dunedin and also one of the sponsors, “I know a lot of the runners really felt comfortable being in such a beautiful place with great food provided after running the race – the whole thing had such a nice flow to it.”

“Throughout the 17 years that the ‘Say No To Drugs Race’ (www. saynotodrugs. com) has been around, one thing has never changed,” said Sue Minkoff, a Race Director, “and that is our message – living a drug-free life is rewarding and fulfilling. The best way to win in life is to do it without drugs.”

About Say No To Drugs Holiday Classic:

The ‘Say No To Drugs’ Holiday Classic Race was started in 1988 by world-class runner and Scientologist Sandra Johnson, who was the captain of the Dianetics Running Team at the time. She got her inspiration by humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard www. lronhubbard. org who wrote extensively on the subject of drugs and developed an extremely effective drug rehabilitation method which is currently in use all over the world. The race advocates healthy and drug-free living and supports many organizations with proceeds from the race such as the Boy and Girl Scouts of America, Drug Free Marshals and the most effective drug rehabilitation organization in the world, Narconon.

Senator Barack Obama presents the Wings of Hope Medal to Board President of the American Brain Tumor Association

John was honored to be given this prestigious award by Senator Barack Obama, who has two children of his own and was touched by John's volunteer efforts on behalf of children with brain tumors. This event was held at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Chicago.

Des Plaines, IL (PRWEB) December 7, 2006

The Midwest Children's Brain Tumor Center at Advocate Lutheran General Children's Hospital awarded John Hipchen, President of the Board of Directors of the American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA), the Center's Wings of Hope Medal. This award is presented at their annual gala to a member of the community who has made a significant impact in the care of children with brain tumors. John was honored to be given this prestigious award by Senator Barack Obama, who has two children of his own and was touched by John's volunteer efforts on behalf of children with brain tumors.

John Hipchen became involved with the American Brain Tumor Association 19 years ago when his son, John Jr. was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Because of the support of the ABTA, John and his wife were quickly brought up to speed on basic anatomy, current treatments and statistics. After his son's initial treatment, John Jr. enjoyed ten years of a cancer-free, healthy, high-quality life. Sadly John Jr. lost his life in 1998. As a tribute to his son and as a means of helping others, John joined the Association's Board of Directors to help ABTA achieve its mission of funding research and serving brain tumor patients and their families. John said, "it was a natural reaction for me to help with ABTA activites whenever I could. And now, as President of the Board of Directors, I look forward to playing a more active role in the tremendous progress and impressive accomplishments that have become common at ABTA."

The American Brain Tumor Association was co-founded in 1973 by Susan Kramer, who lost her 7-year-old daughter to a brain tumor. Susan was a past recipient of the Wings of Hope award.

John Hipchen is available for interviews. Please contact Peggy Kasprzak at 847-827-9910 to arrange this.

The American Brain Tumor Association exists to eliminate brain tumors through research and to meet the needs of brain tumor patients and their families. For information about this association visit www. abta. org.

You Can Ask a Nurse a Health Question on a New Health Website

Submit an online health-related question to a nurse for as low as $14.95 and receive a response within 48 hours. That's the premise of "The Answer-Line", the latest service offered by The Nurse's Choice, a new health information website that also provides a nationwide database of doctors referred and rated by nurses.

Scottsdale, AZ (PRWEB) May 21, 2007

Submit an online health-related question to a nurse for as low as $11.95 and receive a response within 48 hours. That's the premise of "The Answer-Line", the latest service offered by The Nurse's Choice, a new health information website that also provides a nationwide database of doctors referred and rated by nurses.

The Nurse's Choice, LLC is a membership-based Internet site that accepts no advertising making it free of banner and pop-up ads and making easily accessible using ordinary dial-up service. The Answer-Line is available 24/7 at a cost of $11.95 for members and $26.95 for non-members. It also provides a comprehensive resource of healthcare information with searchable content. For a small monthly fee, a member can research an illness, drug, vitamin, alternative medicine or any other health-related topic. Also, as their area becomes available, the member has unlimited access to a database of physicians, dentists, eye doctors, and chiropractors that can be searched by geographic area, insurance plans, specialties and many other criteria. A customizable newsletter, events calendar, recent health articles, links to other health-related sites and an interactive health forum are all included in the cost. Members can also fill out a secured personal medical file where they can access important numbers and health history from any computer, at anytime.

It's the creation of Sue Marie Hauser, an RN with a Master's degree from Arizona State University in Tempe and a former professor at their nursing college. She conceived the idea after giving advice to friends and family for many years about where to find the best doctors. Her answer was always the same: "You should ask a nurse, because they know the doctors best". She now asks fellow nurses to recommend physicians in every field and rate the physician according to a grading scale. In addition, patients are encouraged to add their own ratings.

The Nurse's Choice donates to local charities in exchange for doctor referrals from patients as well. In addition, any individual that wants to do fundraising as part of a membership drive can apply for donations. Details are on the site. In an attempt to keep the site unbiased, doctors cannot post their own information. Initially, it will contain current health information, open to anyone, worldwide. Members can choose from monthly or annual credit card payments.

Although no one wants to think about "it", death and dying is a reality in life that all of us will have to face no matter what the age. Someone will be asked to take charge of making caregiving decisions before that event and funding them. This is not a task that any adult should leave to others. Since most of us have no idea how or when we will have to face these issues, for our loved ones or ourselves, the time to start planning is now - before a painful event arises.

"We are excited to partner with California Registry", said Mrs. Parker. "This partnership will provide all California families comprehensive access to all the services and products they need when preparing for eldercare concerns and coping with end-of-life planning issues. This partnership allows both organizations the opportunity to expand it's services while providing quality resources that families can rely on".

Deni Resources is a death education need information resource that has been raising public awareness concerning

Issues surrounding death, dying and the need for change in palliative care within the U. S. " Deni has continually emphasized

From its onset, the necessity to develop coordinated cooperation between all disciplines and institutions (involved in any aspect of end of life planning) for the express economic, mental and spiritual benefit of the American public" stated Mrs. Parker.

Deni's online presence at Deni. Net is the leading online resource center for families seeking information on any aspect of Total Life and End-of-Life Planning. Administered by Deni Resources Inc., Deni. Net's patent pending system promotes and facilitates responsible stewardship and behavior, towards all aspects of Total Life and End-of-Life planning, thru education, active application and documentation, and direct referral. Smart Horizons Career Online High School Provides Critical Education for Students in Need of an Accessible High School Diploma

Smart Horizons Career Online High School Provides Critical Education for Students in Need of an Accessible High School Diploma

Students At Smart Horizons Career Online High School Seek The Ability to Earn A High School Diploma and Coursework Needed to Earn a Certificate In An Accessible And Cost Effective Format. The School’s First Group of Students Is Hopeful about the Potential Opportunities That Will Be Available to Them in the Competitive Workplace.

Tallahassee, FL (PRWEB) October 6, 2010

Smart Horizons CareerOnline High School(SHCOHS) opened last May with the specific intention to help adults in our nation who have not completed a high school education. This is a significant population, and now more than ever, with jobs being scarce, a high school diploma, coupled with a career certificate is critical. The school’s goal is to quickly and in a cost effective manner provide students the education they need so they can compete in the work force. SHCOHS’s inaugural cohort of students is finishing up their graduation requirements. These students are encouraged about the opportunities that will now be available to them.

Betsaida Marrero is one of these students. Marrero is a twenty-four year old, single mother of three. She is completing the education process that was interrupted after her tenth-grade year by the birth of her first child. “It was hard to go back to school after I had the baby,” Marrero said. “You have to make a lot of decisions when you become a parent and I decided I needed to work for my child, but I never lost the dream of completing my education. I am now able to work on this goal thanks to the Smart Horizons Career Online High School program. I can do it on my own time and in my home, which is very convenient. Taking online high school coursesworks extremely well with my busy schedule.”

In addition to earning her high school diploma, Marrero is also completing course work for a career certificate in office management through the Smart Horizons Career Online High School program.

“I completely love the way the program is designed,” Marrero said. “I am able to understand everything very well, and I also love the fact that I am able to finish high school and get a career certificate as well.”

Marrero said that the SHCOHS program is helpful because it allows her to both read and hear all the information she needs on a given topic. She also likes the way the program helps her to understand a topic by showing her the parts of the topic she did not understand.

“Just knowing that I’m accomplishing this goal to finish school helps me to know that I can look forward to a brighter future both mentally and economically,” Marrero said.

Another student, Vaughn Jones is about to celebrate her 50th birthday, but she’s already giving herself a valuable gift by obtaining the high school diploma that eluded her so many years ago. Smart Horizons Career Online High School is making it possible.

“Smart Horizons Career Online High School is giving me the opportunity to obtain something I’ve been trying to get since 1978,” Jones said, referring to that high school diploma. Jones, who lives in Pahokee, Florida, is also completing course work for a career certificate in Childcare & Education. The ability to earn online high school creditshas helped simplify her life.

“I started out with the career certificate part of the program and I’m almost done with that,” Jones said. “I’ve just started the high school classes and I think this is going to be the most interesting part. It’s a good program and I especially like the math courses.”

Jones, who is married and has four grown children, said it was “hanging with the wrong crowd” that cost her high school diploma in her youth. “I was trying to fit in and I let myself be influenced,” she said. Jones completed the eleventh grade, but left school shortly after starting her senior year.

“Getting this accredited online diplomais going to give me more opportunities than I’ve had,” Jones said. “Most jobs require a high school diploma and this is going to open doors for me.”

Natural Hot Pepper Nasal Spray Winning Over The Skeptics

Natural Hot Pepper Nasal Spray Winning Over The Skeptics

Thousands of former headache sufferers are praising the world's first hot pepper nasal spray as a miracle of sorts. This unusual natural supplement is fast becoming known as the ultimate "headache stopper".

(PRWEB) August 16, 2004

The Sinus Buster is the world’s first commercially produced hot pepper nasal spray manufactured by SiCap Industries of Altamont, New York. The Sinus Buster uses Capsicum, a natural oily resin derived from certain varieties of hot peppers. The active medicinal chemical in Capsicum is “Capsaicin,” the ingredient that puts the “hot” in hot peppers.

Although Capsaicin is itsÂ’ main active ingredient, the Sinus Buster formula incorporates an exclusive mixture of completely natural herbal extracts and other ingredients that are designed to work in combination with the pepper extract. The ingredients are as follows: Oleoresin Capsicum, Eucalyptus Oil, Rosemary Extract, Ascorbic Acid as pure Vitamin C, Sea Salt, and Aloe Vera Gel in a base of purified water.

“We adhere to strict standards so we can proudly call Sinus Buster all natural. A lot of natural health and dietary supplements out there call themselves all natural, but in truth many are not. I mean I use this stuff too…everyday of my life, and I refuse to put something up my nose that’s not all natural. I’ve been on so many medications that never worked over the years, and when I discovered the power of pepper I knew I finally had the ticket. And just think…it all came from mother nature,” says Wayne Perry, President and founder of SiCap Industries.

Perry, a long time chronic cluster headache and sinusitis sufferer, first discovered the medicinal power of peppers while filming a live self defense pepper spray demonstration for a FOX News affiliate in Albany, New York. Just moments before the filming was to take place, Perry was stricken with one of his horrible headaches.

“I went through with the demonstration, and the pepper hurt like hell, but I immediately noticed my headache was gone. It was totally gone, and the constant one sided nasal congestion I always got with the headaches was also gone. I felt like it was some sort of miracle. Believe it or not, I owe my life to hot peppers. They did for me what no other medicine could ever do, and now I feel like I have to spread the word about the power of peppers,” says Perry.

PerryÂ’s love for hot peppers is apparent in everything he does -- he even sports a large tattoo featuring Chile peppers woven together with tribal overtones.

“The more I’ve learn about the medicinal properties of capsaicin, the more excited I get. It’s simply incredible stuff. We know how the capsaicin in sinus buster relieves headaches and sick sinus symptoms, but that’s just scratching the surface of what hot peppers can do. Capsaicin may even prove to have potential cancer fighting abilities as some studies have shown. At the very least, I’ve seen first hand what it can do for people who suffer from a multitude of chronic sinus and headache conditions,” adds Perry.

Since Perry first began marketing his Sinus Buster formula, his company, SiCap Industries has been flooded with thousands of letters, emails, and phone calls from people praising the Sinus Buster as their "life saver".

One believer is Bob Haines of Altamont, New York. Haines had been a long time aquaintance of Perry's when Wayne first decided to mass produce his hot pepper nasal spray, and at that time Haines thought Perry was a little nuts until he found out the spray also helped his own son.

"The first time Wayne told me about sinus buster I didn't know what to think. I mean it sounded pretty crazy to me, but I knew he had those headaches for a long time and he swore the pepper spray cured him. So I took him at his word. He had been a news reporter for a long time here in Albany, and I trusted him, but I still wasn't convinced. Anyway, my oldest son had suffered from severe headaches that would send him laying down in a dark room in gut wrenching pain. He had them ever since he hit puberty, and they were getting worse, so I gave a bottle of sinus buster to my kid and the next day I knew Wayne had a miracle on his hands. Nothing had ever worked for my son and I mean nothing, but the sinus buster did the trick, and because of hot peppers, my son is a changed person. That's when I went to Wayne and offered to give up everything to join his company. Now less than a year later, we've had thousands of customers who've also had their lives changed by the sinus buster just like it did for my son," says Haines, now VP of Manufacturing for SiCap Industries.

The Sinus Buster is also a hit with the media being recently featured in the Wall Street Journal, and on the Today Show.

"The sinus buster shows up in the news all over the place. We've been in magazines, newspapers, and in dozens of tv news reports all over the world. Lots of medical magazines and on websites. Evertime somebody in the media tries the sinus buster, they want to tell their audience about it because it really works. It's about as close to a miracle as you're gonna get," adds Bob Haines.

The Sinus Buster is also becoming a hit with physicians around the country. SiCap gets orders everyday from ENTs and Otolaryngologists who say the Sinus Buster has proven extremely effective for many of their patients suffering from a variety of chronic sinus and headache conditions.

"When we first started everyone was skeptical in the medical community, and I can't say that I blamed them, but now the doctors are really coming around. They see this stuff really working for their patients and it amazes them. The funny thing is this is an all natural supplement, and yet it works better than the best medicines out there. We've really hit onto something big here, and I'm proud to be a part of it," says Wayne Perry.

SiCap officials say they'll also be introducing a special "metered dose" bottle for the Sinus Buster just in time for cold and flu season, and more innovative capsaicin products are on the way -- including an all natural insect repellent to be launched in the spring of 2005. Oklahoma Gains National Affiliate Office to Help Citizens with Gambling Problems

Oklahoma Gains National Affiliate Office to Help Citizens with Gambling Problems

OKlahoma Association of Problem & Compulsive Gamblers earned its national accreditation and became the OK affiliate for the National Council of Problem & Compulsive Gamblers. Since April of 2005, OAPCG has trained and certified more than 40 counselors to help problem gamblers and their families, currently 44 more are in the certification program. The goal is to have 100 trained counselors available by the end of 2006. The organization is also establishing a statewide hotline to be available to Oklahomans 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Tulsa, OK (PRWEB) February 25, 2006

300 million dollars: that’s the jackpot for this week’s Powerball drawing. The idea of winning that jackpot will have tens of thousands of Oklahomans handing over their money for a chance to win the big prize. With Powerball, lottery tickets, race tracks and casinos, Oklahomans have more choices than ever for gambling. But the reality is, thousands of them will not be able to stop. In fact, the National Council for Problem Gambling estimates between 3 and 5 percent of Oklahomans are compulsive or pathological gamblers.

The Oklahoma Association for Problem & Compulsive Gambling (OAPCG) is here to help people with gambling problems. And this week, OAPCG earned its national accreditation and became the state’s affiliate for the National Coalition of Problem & Compulsive Gamblers. The agency is now the state’s official resource to help problem gamblers and their families in Oklahoma. OAPCG does not take a position for or against legalized gambling. It is an advocate for problem gamblers.

As the popularity of gambling grows in Oklahoma, it is the goal of OAPCG to partner with the Oklahoma State Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse as well as the various gaming enterprises to create a positive infrastructure within Oklahoma to address the needs of problem gamblers and their families.

Problem gambling occurs when playing the game compromises, disrupts or damages the person’s family life or career. Problem gamblers become irritable, sometimes depressed and preoccupied with playing: betting more money more often. It’s a problem that knows no boundaries and can affect anyone at any time.

“Even people who have money or fame can fall victim to problem gambling. That became evident this past week with Janet Gretzky’s admission of a gambling problem. It is our goal to help all people before gambling becomes a compulsion,” Said Executive Director Michael H. Smith, PhD.

For a complete list of counselors and for more information on our organization, please visit our website at www. oapcg. org. To arrange an interview with Executive Director Michael H. Smith, PhD, call Jessica Powell at 918-408-6760.

Law Firm Walks to Its Heart's Content

Members of HensonFuerst join forces to "beat" nation's leading killer

Rocky Mount, N. C. (PRWEB) October 14, 2009

The members of HensonFuerst do more than fight for their clients--they're also fighting for the millions of people affected by heart disease, the nation's leading killer. For the third year in a row, the firm's members will walk to raise funds and awareness during the American Heart Association's Start! Heart Walk in Rocky Mount (http://www. americanheart. org/presenter. jhtml? identifier=3001320) on Saturday, Oct. 24. The team has raised a total of $2,770 during the past two walks and hopes to increase that amount by at least $1,750 this year.

"We want to show everyone how strongly we feel about being heart healthy and keeping fit," attorney David Henson (http://www. lawmed. com/david-henson. php) said. "We're working together to raise money for research and encourage our friends, family, and neighbors to lead healthier lives."

Leading by Example
The members of HensonFuerst know the importance of heart health at any age. Whether it's participating in triathlons, running for a cause, or cycling 100 miles, many firm members--whose ages range from 18 to 70--have participated in athletic events to raise money for various charities. To recognize the importance of being healthy as well as giving back to the community, the firm established the HensonFuerst Health Initiative (http://www. lawmed. com/health-initiative/index. php) to encourage the community and firm members to prevent injuries, promote health and fitness, and aid organizations committed to improving health and well-being.

Taking North Carolina's Pulse

American Heart Association's Start! Heart Walk
As the American Heart Association's signature fund-raising event, the Start! Heart Walk promotes physical activity and heart-healthy living in a fun family environment. Acumen Fund Announces New Investments in Pakistan to Build Scalable Businesses that Serve the Poor

Acumen Fund Announces New Investments in Pakistan to Build Scalable Businesses that Serve the Poor

Investments aim to increase milk productivity of livestock through breed improvement and provide scalable, sustainable low-cost housing to the poor

New York, NY (PRWEB) October 6, 2009

Acumen Fund, a nonprofit venture firm addressing poverty in South Asia and East Africa, announced today two new investments in Pakistan:
Ansaar Management Company (AMC), a low-cost housing development and management company aiming to scale a low-cost housing project throughout Pakistan: a $1,100,000 equity investment; and  Jassar Farms Private Ltd, a corporate dairy farming business focused on dairy and breed improvement of poor livestock farmers aiming to increase milk productivity: a $1,420,000 equity and debt investment.

"With the recent investments in AMC and Jassar Farms, Acumen Fund continues its commitment to supporting innovative entrepreneurs in Pakistan who aim to solve the challenges of global poverty," said Acumen Fund CEO Jacqueline Novogratz. "Acumen Fund seeks to change the development paradigm, from a focus on top-down aid to a focus on investing in entrepreneurs because we believe that ultimately they are the ones who will provide solutions to poverty."

Acumen Fund began investing in Pakistan in 2002 with a focus on the housing sector, providing slum-dwellers with affordable legal housing and infrastructure alternatives, as well as innovative financial services that allowed low-income clients to improve their homes and supplement their incomes. Acumen Fund has since expanded its focus over the years in an effort to address in a more comprehensive manner the critical issues keeping the majority of the population of 166 million people in poverty.

"AMC and Jassar Farms have the potential to make a large impact in their respective industries in Pakistan," said Acumen Fund Pakistan Director Aun Rahman. "AMC builds on lessons from another Acumen investment, Saiban, and will provide us with yet another opportunity to spur the growth of a formal affordable housing industry in Pakistan, while Jassar Farms will establish locally a world-class production facility to improve livestock breeding, which will, over time, increase milk yields and increase incomes of farming families."

With increased rural-urban migration, low income populations in urban centers are expected to double in the next 15 years; AMC's model and commitment to scalability serves to ease the strain on the existing housing shortage in Pakistan. Founded by former Acumen Fund Fellow Jawad Aslam, AMC will take the critical lessons and business model of Saiban, an existing Acumen Fund investment, and provide to people earning $62-$250 per month ($2-8 per day) with access to plots of developed land in several settlements at affordable rates, thus providing them with secure residential tenure and public utilities in areas where they would normally have no real access to property or such services. By focusing on scalability and sustainability through a for-profit, low-cost approach, AMC has the potential to be the first commercial, low-cost housing company, with the initial objective of reaching over 2,500 lower income families in Pakistan through its first housing project.

As for Pakistan's agriculture sector, over 75% of livestock owners are poor farmers owning less than four cows, and face a severe problem of low production rates. Despite this low productivity, Pakistan is the fifth largest milk producer in the world, yet still, it takes five Pakistani cows to produce as much milk as one cow in the US or Europe. The main factors hindering better milk productivity by smallholder farmers are a lack of focus on breed and gene-pool improvement of cows, poor farm management, and the use of the low-quality feed. Jassar Farms will work to improve breeding through artificial insemination using quality bull semen.

"Jassar Farms, as Acumen Fund's first investment within the dairy and livestock space, will certainly bring valuable insights regarding the challenges and possibilities of increasing the productivity and income streams of poor dairy farmers," added Rahman. "AMC will provide insights on how to better scale and sustain an affordable housing model not only in Pakistan but around the world. We look forward to sharing our insights with the entire social sector."

California Institutions Invest More Than $200 Million Back into State: Market-Rate Fixed Income Securities Support Affordable Housing, Healthcare, Economic Development, Home Ownership & Job Creation in California

California Institutions Invest More Than $200 Million Back into State: Market-Rate Fixed Income Securities Support Affordable Housing, Healthcare, Economic Development, Home Ownership & Job Creation in California

Community Capital Management (formerly CRAFund Advisors), one of the nation's largest managers of fixed income community investments, announced today that it has purchased more than $200 million worth of bonds that finance economic and community development in California.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (PRWEB) December 7, 2007

Since 1999, Community Capital's $235 million of fixed income investments on behalf of its clients in the State have enabled the approximate funding of $33 million in community and economic development; $26 million in statewide housing and down-payment assistance; $15 million in job training and job creation initiatives; 300 mortgages for low - and moderate-income families; and 7,400 affordable rental housing units.(a)

"Investments such as these help to meet the needs of California's rapidly growing number of diverse residents by working to stabilize and improve the state's communities," said Barbara VanScoy, Executive Vice President of Community Capital Management. "Working closely with community groups, municipal issuers, and investors across California, we try to maximize the impact of our investments to enhance the lives of thousands of Golden State residents."

This positive impact stems from Community Capital's investments on behalf of public and private institutional investors as well as via a mutual fund for individual investors.

Examples of California projects that have been supported by Community Capital Management investments include:

-- Mission Creek Senior Community, San Francisco: An environmentally-sustainable mixed-use development containing 140 apartments for low-income seniors, as well as a number of community resources, including an adult health center, community room, and public library branch.

-- Wilshire Station, Los Angeles: A mixed-use development including affordable rental housing units, a Los Angeles Unified School District Middle School for approximately 800 students and a childcare center. The complex sits atop a subway station and includes a connection center for bus transport.

-- Loma Linda Redevelopment Plan, Loma Linda: Support for community development and infrastructure improvements, with special emphasis on eliminating and preventing blight. The plan will seek to encourage employment opportunities through environmental and economic improvements resulting from redevelopment activities.

-- Neighborhood National Bank CD, San Diego: An investment provided funding for addressing local economic development needs, with special emphasis on supporting women and minority-owned businesses.

In addition to these projects, Community Capital's investments have supported several small businesses throughout California via securitized pools of targeted Small Business Administration (SBA) loans.

"Our clients in California understand the benefits of putting fixed income assets - that still meet their strict financial criteria - to work in their own backyard," said Todd Cohen, Chief Investment Officer of Community Capital Management. "By directing assets to competitively performing bonds that support community and economic development in California - as opposed to other states - these investors are generating benefits close to home. We're thrilled that our clients are making a real difference in the lives of individuals and families in need."

WaveGuide Studios Awarded Davey Statuette

WaveGuide Studios Awarded Davey Statuette

The Davey Awards honors WaveGuide Studios for “Melissa’s Story”, produced for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Tucker, GA (PRWEB) January 31, 2006

The Davey Awards honored WaveGuide Studios for “Melissa’s Story”, produced for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. The 18-minute video, commissioned by Children’s Nurse-Physician Task Force, explores potentially problematic communication issues between physicians and nurses, acting as a springboard for discussion and training sessions. WaveGuide Studios was called upon to produce a video that showed actual nurses and physicians role-playing effective and ineffective communication scenarios.

Instead of an isolated series of vignettes, the video was developed as a pair of “day in the life” dramas that follow the experiences of Melissa Davis, a nine-year-old appendectomy patient. In the first version, the audience sees the results of poor communication between nurses and physicians. After a discussion session, the participants see the same day repeated with effective communication methods.

“We wanted to deliver something that felt both compelling and realistic,” said director Marshall Peterson. “Because there are a number of complex issues involved, and because we had to show the same day in the hospital done both ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, we knew the final edit would be rather long -- close to twenty minutes. If we took the usual training/role play approach, we’d put the audience to sleep and they wouldn’t feel any sense of involvement. Instead, we created a TV drama, with all the pressures and issues that physicians and nurses face distilled into a single high-intensity day.”

Shot film-style in 24p Vericam HD, the finished project was highly successful, showing measurable results in quality of care and improved employee spirit. Other hospitals across the country have expressed interest in using the DVD as part of their communication training programs. “For us, that’s the real award,” according to Peterson. “When our work delights our clients and effectively does the job it was designed to do, that’s a home run.”

BioFit 1Y Takes the Plunge to Fill Undersea Seating Role for NOAA

BioFit 1Y Takes the Plunge to Fill Undersea Seating Role for NOAA

BioFit Engineered Products, an Ohio-based manufacturer and long-standing leader in the development of ergonomic seating, recently provided the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) with a solution to a unique furnishing challenge it faced within its Florida Keys-based undersea research habitat.

Bowling Green, OH (PRWEB) January 10, 2009

BioFit Engineered Products, an Ohio-based manufacturer and long-standing leader in the development of ergonomic seating, recently provided the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) with a solution to a unique furnishing challenge it faced within its Florida Keys-based undersea research habitat. As a result, NOAA aquanauts can now work comfortably at the facility's computer station thanks to BioFit's 1Y swing-arm stool.

The Aquarius underwater laboratory is owned by the NOAA and operated by the NOAA Undersea Research Program's Undersea Research Center at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Located in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, Aquarius is deployed 3.5 miles offshore at a depth of 60 feet, adjacent to spectacular coral reefs. Scientists live in the underwater laboratory during 10-day missions and use saturation diving to study and explore the US coastal ocean. Limited space within the habitat means equipment and furnishings are closely scrutinized for size and functionality. Until recently, a folding plastic step stool served as the seating for the habitat's computer station. Then a NOAA researcher discovered the 1Y from BioFit Engineered Products.

The flexible BioFit 1Y features a swiveling base with a pivoting arm that can be securely mounted to any stable vertical surface, allowing it to swing out of the way while not in use and stay put while it is. The 1Y was designed to serve in a variety of environments where space constraints are a primary consideration, ranging from assembly lines, factories and other industrial settings to medical laboratories and classrooms. Another more innovative installation of the 1Y includes the sleeper cab of a truck. The 1Y is available in many chair and stool configurations, comes in a wide range of upholstery options, and is backed by an industry-leading 13-year warranty.

According to Craig Cooper, Operations Director of the NOAA Undersea Research Center, "We were using an old PVC step stool as the seat at our computer stations and knew we needed a more suitable alternative. A member of the operations team, Dewey Smith, found the 1Y online. In addition to providing a more comfortable seat for computer users, the swing-arm feature and small footprint make 'the Dewey stool,' as we call it, a good fit for the habitat." Cooper added that three more 1Y stools have been purchased and will be installed during a future dive in the main lock and laboratory stations of the habitat.

For additional information on BioFit 1Y seating, contact Liz Sworden of BioFit Engineered Products at 800-597-0246. For detailed product information or to get a quote, visit www. biofit. com.

Blackwell Publishing Launches Early Intervention in Psychiatry

Blackwell Publishing Launches Early Intervention in Psychiatry

Blackwell Publishing is set to break into an exciting new area of clinical psychiatry with its new journal - Early Intervention in Psychiatry. The journal will be launched at the IEPA Conference in Birmingham in October 2006, and will publish its inaugural issue in February 2007.

Melbourne, Australia (PRWEB) October 4, 2006

Early Intervention in Psychiatry is targeted at international researchers in all major psychiatric disorder groups – clinicians, primary health care workers, health planners and policy makers. The journal aims to create a common forum that will enable researchers and clinicians working across the full spectrum of disorders with a special interest in their early phases to share ideas, experiences and data.

Editor-in-Chief of Early Intervention in Psychiatry, Professor Patrick McGorry, said “In contrast with mainstream healthcare, early diagnosis and intervention has come late to the field of psychiatry. Building on the exponential progress in early psychosis over the past decade, as well as widespread interest around the world in preventive psychiatry, it is now timely to broaden the early intervention focus.”

Early Intervention in Psychiatry will publish articles dealing with the early recognition, diagnosis and treatment across the full range of mental and substance use disorders, as well as the underlying epidemiological, biological, psychological and social mechanisms that influence the onset and early course of these disorders.

Mark Robertson, President of Blackwell Publishing in Asia, said, “We are excited at the great potential for growth with this journal, and at how this partnership gives a greater dimension to the width and depth of journals published by Blackwell Publishing in Asia.”

Professor McGorry added, “I am confident Early Intervention in Psychiatry will not only fill a long standing gap in academic and clinical psychiatry, but also push the existing boundaries in this field of practice.”

Media wishing to receive further information on the journal, please contact Alina Boey, Public Relations (Asia), via e-mail.

About Early Intervention in Psychiatry

Early Intervention in Psychiatry will publish original research articles and reviews dealing with the early recognition, diagnosis and treatment across the full range of mental and substance use disorders, as well as the underlying epidemiological, biological, psychological and social mechanisms that influence the onset and early course of these disorders. The journal will provide comprehensive coverage of early intervention for the full range of psychiatric disorders and mental health problems, including schizophrenia and other psychoses, mood and anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, eating disorders and personality disorders. Papers in any of the following fields will be considered: diagnostic issues, psychopathology, clinical epidemiology, biological mechanisms, treatments and other forms of intervention, clinical trials, health services and economic research and mental health policy. Special features will also be published including hypotheses, controversies and snapshots of innovative service models.
