Liko, Inc., a leading global supplier of mobile patient lifts and overhead lifting systems, has relocated its headquarters to a new 37,000 square-foot facility in Franklin, Massachusetts. The facility represents a space increase of more than 50 percent over Liko’s previous location and is designed to accommodate the company’s anticipated growth over the next several years.

The cornerstone of the new facility is a state-of-the-art warehousing operation that will enable Liko to store and efficiently ship high volumes of items such as overhead rails, lift motors, mobile floor lifts, and the company’s extensive array of slings and accessories. Liko recently announced a number of sole-source purchasing agreements with major healthcare institutions that will require significant shipments of inventory over the course of several years.

In addition, the new facility features an advanced Safe Lifting Center for providing attendees training on the latest equipment and patient handling techniques. The Center includes several hands-on, state-of-the-art healthcare labs simulating hospital, nursing home, and home care settings. Training and certification courses for Liko dealers and distributor consultants, healthcare professionals and clients will continue to be taught by clinical professionals but will be more advanced to take full advantage of the different clinical simulation labs. An innovative new construction laboratory is designed to provide training and certification on an array of overhead lift system installation techniques by simulating and exceeding a variety of construction and architectural requirements. Hands-on work, problem-solving, and testing are all included as training exercises, all with the objective of certificating overhead installation specialists.

“This new facility is ideal to meet our requirements well into the future,” stated Hans Sigvardsson, president of Liko, Inc., the North American subsidiary of Swedish manufacturer Liko AB. “Not only does it dramatically increase our space for warehousing and headquarters personnel, it gives us the ability to utilize realistic simulation laboratories and live, hands-on techniques to their fullest extent. This capability is vital because it further cements the critical importance of safe lifting techniques in the modern healthcare environment.”

The new Liko headquarters facility is located at 122 Grove Street in Franklin, MA, a short distance from Exit 17 of U. S. Route 495.

Proterra To Create Over 1,000 Cleantech Jobs in South Carolina with Pioneering Clean Transportation Manufacturing and R&D Center

Proterra To Create Over 1,000 Cleantech Jobs in South Carolina with Pioneering Clean Transportation Manufacturing and R&D Center

Clean-transit start-up Proterra selected Greenville, South Carolina, for its new manufacturing and R&D center that will employ over 1,000 local residents. Proterra will partner with world-renowned Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR) to drive its vision for a clean-transit future.

Greenville, SC (PRWEB) February 4, 2010

Colorado-based Proterra Inc (http://www. proterraonline. com), the world leader in drive and energy storage systems for buses and trucks, today announced that it will locate its new manufacturing and innovation center in Greenville, South Carolina, where the company will hire over one thousand employees to design and manufacture its line of clean transportation solutions. Proterra’s plant will be located within the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR) (http://www. cuicar. com/) campus, enabling Proterra to form a close partnership with CU-ICAR to accelerate technology innovation and commercialization of its groundbreaking all-electric and battery-dominant hybrid drive solutions.

Proterra’s Greenville manufacturing and research and development center will open in 2011, and be housed in a newly constructed 250,000 square foot building on the CU-ICAR campus. The new facility is in addition to Proterra’s headquarters in Golden, Colorado. The plant will be home to the manufacturing and development initiatives of the company’s clean commercial transportation solutions, which include all-electric and battery-dominant hybrid transit, school and commercial buses, parcel delivery vehicles and other class 4-8 trucks. The company plans to hire over 1,000 local employees in the next four years.

“Proterra's decision to put down roots in South Carolina represents not only a significant investment and new job opportunities, but also another step toward expanding our state's role in the growing market of next generation clean technologies,” said South Carolina Governor Sanford. “I’d offer the state's appreciation to Sec. Taylor and his team at Commerce along with all our economic development partners at the state and local levels for their combined efforts to make our state that much more competitive in this global economy.”

Founded in 2004, Proterra’s vision is to create affordable, high-performance commercial vehicle solutions to address the critical global issue of unhealthy and polluting carbon emissions caused by diesel buses and trucks as well as to reduce US dependence on foreign oil. Proterra’s revolutionary zero-emission BE-35 fast charge battery electric transit bus, recently tested at the Federal Transit Administration’s Altoona, PA Testing Center, achieved 21 miles per gallon (diesel equivalent) fully loaded, an approximately 500 percent improvement over conventional diesel buses. Proterra’s first vehicle, a battery dominant fuel cell hybrid transit bus funded by the FTA, is in service in Columbia, South Carolina, and the company has demonstration projects running with the Department of Defense’s Ft. Lewis base, the City of Burbank and other transit agencies to be revealed in the upcoming weeks.

“As the home of our first battery-dominant fuel cell bus, South Carolina is a fitting place for us to set up the foundation of the next stage of our research and development,” said Jeff Granato, CEO, Proterra. “We couldn’t be more excited to bring on local employees to help make our vision for clean transportation a reality, and to partner with the incredible team at CU-ICAR on research and development. We are grateful to South Carolina’s Congressional, state, county and city delegations for the tireless efforts and enthusiasm making the decision to move to the state so easy, and look forward to a long, successful partnership with South Carolina.”

Proterra’s Greenville facility will begin with a groundbreaking in the spring of 2010, and be operational in 2011. Hiring for the facility will focus on manufacturing, supply chain, product management and operations roles. For more information on the plant, please email: Greenville(at)proterra(dot)com.

Gut-Wrenching Advice: Don't Wait Until the Celiac Damage is Done

Gut-Wrenching Advice: Don't Wait Until the Celiac Damage is Done

First at-home blood test for celiac disease now available in Canada from 2G Pharma Inc.

Toronto, ON (PRWEB) October 27, 2008

Most adults are nearing midlife before they find out with certainty they have celiac disease, a lifelong genetically-based disorder. Many people go through life thinking their migraines and gut aches are stress-related.

Celiac disease occurs when gluten -- a protein found in wheat, rye and barley -- triggers an abnormal response that damages the lining of the small intestine, interfering with the body's absorption of nutrients. The disease affects people differently. For some, the symptoms might be diarrhea, bloating and abdominal pain, while for others it might be mouth ulcers, irritability or depression. In fact, irritability is one of the most common symptoms in children.

Now there is a simple, accurate way to determine if someone is susceptible to celiac disease. For the first time in Canada, Health Canada has approved the Biocard Celiac Test Kit, an at-home test that measures IgA antibodies from a fingertip blood sample. While this easy blood test gives a high degree of certainty that a person is either developing celiac disease or already has celiac disease, one still needs to see a doctor for a confirmation.

According to a 2007 survey of the Canadian Celiac Association's more than 5000 members, the average time it took to get diagnosed was 12 years. Many reported consulting with three or more doctors before their diagnosis was confirmed. And while most people think celiac disease is a children's disease, more than two-thirds of those diagnosed are adults.

"The frequently late diagnosis for celiac disease has painful ramifications for those who have suffered needlessly for all those years" says Janet Monk, co-founder of 2G Pharma Inc., marketers of the Biocard Celiac Test Kit. "A person with celiac disease may have no symptoms, so the longer a person goes undiagnosed and untreated, the greater the chance of developing malnutrition and other complications. Delays in diagnosis also add significant costs to our health care system."

Left untreated, celiac disease increases the risk of malnutrition, osteoporosis (because of poor absorption of calcium and vitamin D), infertility, certain digestive cancers and other conditions such as Type 1 diabetes and thyroid disease.

"Until now, tests to assess gluten intolerance have been hard to access," said Monk. "There have always been lab blood tests and the biopsy test, which is considered the most definitive. However, testing takes a long time to arrange and many doctors haven't really been supportive of testing patients that complain about abdominal problems. The Biocard screening test shortens the waiting around period--the results are quick and accurate and if positive, gives you the assurance to seek professional treatment faster."

The test kit is available for Canada and can be purchased online at http://www. celiachometest. com (http://www. celiachometest. com) or at London Drugs, Overwaitea, Save on Pharmacy, Rexall Pharma Plus, Jean Coutu, Mayers and other major Canadian retail chains.

October is celiac awareness month in Canada.

Founded by Karina Nelimarkka and Janet Monk, 2G Pharma Inc. markets the unique, patient-friendly celiac test kit first developed by AniBiotech in Finland. This kit has been redesigned for the Canadian market and is currently the only Health Canada approved point-of-care celiac disease test kit available. Donovan Introduces Ultra LF® Non-Latex Material That Eliminates Latex Allergenic Concerns

Donovan Introduces Ultra LF® Non-Latex Material That Eliminates Latex Allergenic Concerns

Ultra LF is a new synthetic latex material that performs like latex but does not have any of the allergenic issues associated with natural latex.

(PRWEB) February 9, 2005

Donovan Industries is excited to announce the launch of Ultra LF®, a new latex-free material that solves the issue surrounding allergenic reactions to latex & rubber products yet delivers latex like performance and pricing. Initially, two new products will be launched utilizing this material. Resist-A-Band™ Ultra LF® Fitness Bands are used by physical therapists, chiropractors, rehabilitation specialists and trainers to assist in the rehabilitation of injuries and overall conditioning. Dawnmist® Ultra LF® Tourniquets are used by a variety of healthcare workers when blood samples are needed.

The occurrence of latex allergies has grown dramatically since the late 1980's. Depending upon which medical study you read, anywhere between 7% and 20% of health care workers are now sensitive to latex exposure. Existing latex free products do not exhibit the performance properties (strength, feel, elongation & recovery) that have made latex the material of choice. Ultra LF® solves these problems by utilizing a proprietary formulation and manufacturing process. The material feels like natural latex, exhibits excellent stretch characteristics and is very strong. Most importantly, the resistance levels of the new Ultra LF® material closely matches existing latex resistance standards known in the healthcare and rehabilitation industries. “The Ultra LF® material is truly a remarkable breakthrough that has practical application in many products,” states Jim Donovan-CEO Donovan Industries. “Since latex allergies have become more prevalent, we are happy to have found a solution to this issue that does not lead to sacrifices in performance or significantly increased costs.”

Donovan Industries is the manufacturer of Resist-A-Band™ fitness and rehab products and Dawnmist® Personal Hygiene Products. Quality Latex Products Ltd. (QLPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Donovan, manufactures both branded and OEM products worldwide for a variety of organizations.

National Awareness Month Used to Promote Communication Health of an Aging America

National Awareness Month Used to Promote Communication Health of an Aging America

With more than 20% of Consumers 55+ Having a Communication Disorder, Tips Released on Identification and Prevention

Rockville, MD (Vocus) April 27, 2010

To reinforce the important messages about communication disorders during Better Hearing and Speech Month (http://www. asha. org/bhsm), the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) (http://www. asha. org/) released tips to help more than 70 million Americans age 55 and older identify and prevent a speech (http://www. asha. org/public/speech), language or hearing (http://www. asha. org/public/hearing) disorder.

As people age, normal changes occur in hearing, speech, language, memory, and swallowing. Once an individual turns 55, their chances of having a hearing loss, suffering a stroke, developing dementia or Parkinson's disease increases which can lead to a related communication disorder.

Warning signs of speech, language, and hearing problems include:
Sudden trouble talking, thinking, or moving parts of your body – this could be a sign of a stroke, and you should see a doctor immediately  Turning the TV louder or asking people to repeat themselves  Trouble remembering appointments or how to do familiar tasks  A hoarse voice or easily losing your voice  Trouble speaking clearly that gets worse over time

Tips for preventing communication disorders:
Reduce your risk for stroke – stop smoking, control your blood pressure, exercise regularly  Use helmets and seat belts to prevent brain injury  Get regular checkups, including hearing tests, to stay in top form  Protect your voice – don’t yell or talk in noisy places, drink water, and avoid smoking  Turn down the TV or radio when you talk with others – you’ll hear each other better and you won’t have to speak loudly  Keep your mind sharp – do puzzles, read, and keep up with current events  Stay active and social – do things with friends and get involved in your community For most American 55 and older, unlike many disabilities, speech, language, and hearing problems can be prevented. The key is early identification and intervention; the earlier a problem is identified the sooner treatment can begin.

If you suspect that you or family members have a communication disorder, consult a certified speech-language pathologist or audiologist. Speech-language pathologists and audiologists play an important role in working with individuals who are 55 and older. These professionals can assist this age group in differentiating between normal aging and having a communication disorder. They can provide tips and techniques to prevent communication problems and keep your speech, voice, and language in top form.

For more information about speech, language, and hearing disorders and prevention, visit www. asha. org. To find a speech-language pathologist or audiologist in your local area, go to ProSearch at http://www. asha. org/findpro/ (http://www. asha. org/findpro/).

About ASHA:
ASHA is the national professional, scientific, and credentialing association for more than 140,000 audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and speech, language, and hearing scientists. Audiologists specialize in preventing and assessing hearing and balance disorders as well as providing audiologic treatment including hearing aids. Speech-language pathologists identify, assess, and treat speech and language problems including swallowing disorders.

Michigan Personal Injury Attorney Says STD Screening is Crucial to Prevent Long Term Health Problems, Determine Potential Liability

Michigan Personal Injury Attorney Says STD Screening is Crucial to Prevent Long Term Health Problems, Determine Potential Liability

Suits involving sexually transmitted diseases are becoming more common, but early screening by the victim is needed to hold a partner liable for herpes and other diseases, says Michigan personal injury lawyer Thomas L. Stroble.

Bloomfield Hills, Michigan (PRWEB) December 16, 2010

If a person experiences health issues after having sexual contact with another, it is crucial to undergo screening for a sexually transmitted disease for medical and legal reasons, Michigan personal injury attorney Thomas L. Stroble said this week.

Screening can not only detect the STD early on and prevent serious health complications, but it may also help to hold the person who transmitted the disease responsible for medical costs, pain and suffering and possibly punitive damages, Stroble said.

“As our society takes an increasingly serious stance towards stopping the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, lawsuits involving STDs are becoming more common,” said Stroble, whose Bloomfield Hills personal injury law firm, The Stroble Law Firm, P. C., represents STD victims in civil actions throughout Oakland County and the surrounding area.

“A lawsuit can not only compensate a person who has suffered tremendous trauma from being infected with a STD, but it can also act as a deterrent to risky, reckless and costly behavior,” he said.

Stroble pointed that, according to a Centers for Disease Prevention and Control report issued last month, about 19 million Americans are infected with a sexually transmitted disease each year at a combined estimated cost of $16.4 billion.

The CDC report noted an increase in the transmission of Chlamydia and syphilis in recent years. Although the CDC does not compile statistics regarding genital herpes and human papillomavirus (HPV) infections, they are widely believed to be the most commonly transmitted STDs.

“Herpes, in particular, is a very serious, lifelong disease, which can lead to serious complications if not detected and treated at a very early stage,” Stroble said. “It not only harms the victim, but it could also impact the victim’s unborn children.”

According to Stroble, screening for STDs may help to determine the person who transmitted the disease. That person could be held liable in a civil lawsuit, he said, if it can be shown that the person knew of the condition, failed to disclose it before engaging in sexual contact and transmitted the disease to a partner.

“If the person knew they had herpes, for instance, and failed to tell their partner about the disease or to take proper precautionary steps, such as wearing a condom, that could serve as grounds for liability,” Stroble said.

Stroble suggested contacting a family physician or a local county health division for more information about STDs, walk-in clinics, screening, testing, diagnosis, treatment and counseling options.

Increase in Premarital Agreements an (Unexpected) Effect of the Great Recession - Family Law Attorney C. Keith Lea Weighs In

Increase in Premarital Agreements an (Unexpected) Effect of the Great Recession - Family Law Attorney C. Keith Lea Weighs In

As the recession continues, more couples in Houston and throughout the nation are opting to protect their remaining assets, and one way they are doing so is by entering into premarital agreements, says attorney C. Keith Lea. In a growing trend, more women and unmarried couples are utilizing prenups than ever before.

Houston, TX (PRWEB) October 26, 2010

There was a time when only the very rich thought of using premarital agreements. That is not the case anymore, says attorney C. Keith Lea, of Wilhite & Lea, P. C. Today, more middle-class couples are choosing to sign such agreements—and it is no longer only men making the first move.

A recent poll, conducted by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), finds that 52% of divorce attorneys nationwide report an increase in the initiation of premarital agreements by women.* That increase is due, in part, to the increase in the number of women in the workforce. According to the Department of Labor, women now comprise 46.8% of the workforce, and that number is rising.** While those are nationwide statistics, women make up an increasing percentage of the workforce in Houston as well. With more women working and making higher salaries and wages, women have increasingly become interested in protecting their assets should their marriage end in divorce.

The reasons for an increase in the number of premarital agreements in Texas, and throughout the country, include more than protecting assets owned before marriage. More middle class couples are opting to sign prenups as a way to protect their retirement and pension benefits. The AAML poll found a 36% increase in the number of couples including retirement or pension benefits in their premarital agreements, in an attempt to protect what the dwindling economy may have already ravaged.* Other couples opt to sign prenups as a way to protect future spouses against the other’s separate debts. Under Texas law, there are few limits to what may be agreed to in a premarital agreement, giving today’s couples the freedom to make decisions that extend far beyond protection of wealth.

“Many couples are afraid to talk with their significant other about premarital agreements”, says Houston family law attorney C. Keith Lea. “Some are afraid that the other half of the couple will get defensive, or that it will be seen as a sign of bad faith. But when the prenup conversation is handled with honesty, respect, and consideration of the rights of both prospective spouses, the result can be a greater level of financial understanding and confidence.”

“An experienced family law attorney can help you facilitate the conversation and negotiate an agreement,” says Lea.

It is also important to note that prenups are not just for engaged couples. Today many couples who do not plan to marry but who share a residence, property, and debt load are opting to sign cohabitation agreements, also known as “cohabs.” Cohabs are an option for students, young professionals, and other persons living together who do not plant to tie the knot, but still wish to plan for the future. A cohabitation agreement may cover issues such as which party will move out of the shared residence in the event of a break-up, who will take what furniture or other personal property, and even who will get custody of the pets.

“Individuals from all social and economic groups have been executing wills and other estate planning documents and investing in life, disability, health, vehicle, and homeowners’ insurance for decades to plan for life’s contingencies. Thoughtful planning can give you peace of mind in an otherwise tumultuous world,” Lea reminds, “and premarital or cohabitation agreements are viable options for limiting or preventing future costly financial disputes.”

C. Keith Lea is a shareholder with Wilhite & Lea, P. C. Lea handles civil litigation, family law, and divorce matters in Houston, including the surrounding areas of Harris, Montgomery, Fort Bend, Grimes, Washington, and Waller Counties.

Superwoman Must Die! Why Women are Still Exhausted

Superwoman Must Die! Why Women are Still Exhausted

A recent study found that women are so exhausted when they get home from work, that all they want to do is fall asleep on the couch! Trying to juggle work and family responsibilities is taking its toll. Time management has been touted as the answer – but is it?

WorkLifeSkills, Queensland, Australia (PRWEB) November 11, 2005

When asked at a recent conference what one skill would help them to better balance work and life responsibilities, over 180 women identified ‘time management’. However, the key note presenter Dr Jackie Holt outlined why time management strategies often added to their exhaustion rather than alleviate it.

In her research involving professionals from the medical and education field, Dr Holt found that if women did not have the basic belief that their personal time was important then any time that they saved from time management strategies was most likely spent doing more work. This resulted in them working more hours rather than less and compounded the exhaustion they were already experiencing.

According to Dr Holt, “Time management is not really the answer; it’s what we decide is important that will determine how our time is spent. If we do not believe that we ‘deserve’ to spend time on ourselves, then we won’t. Unfortunately, it is often a crisis of some kind; health concerns, relationship problems or business disasters that force us to rethink our priorities.”

While there are no prescriptive formulas for work/life balance, there is a proven, practical process that can assist women to reclaim their time and energy. The RIPPLES Self Management Process was evaluated as part of a PhD looking at decreasing psychological distress amongst doctors. By following the step by step process, women can fight off the Superwoman myth and learn how to spend guilt free time on themselves.

InkHead Promotional Products Earns Third Consecutive Inc.5000 Ranking

InkHead Promotional Products Earns Third Consecutive Inc.5000 Ranking

InkHead Promotional Products has earned a place on Inc. Magazine's prestigious Inc. 5000 list of the 5000 best-performing companies in America for the third year in a row, making it one of the few promotional-products distributors to experience growth in the economic downturn and confirming its place as a rock-solid company with which to do business.

Winder, GA (PRWEB) September 16, 2010

For the third year in a row, InkHead Promotional Products (http://www. inkhead. com) has earned a prominent position on Inc. Magazine’s “Inc. 5000” list of the best-performing companies in America. InkHead jumped more than 1000 places to rise on this prestigious list that includes some of the biggest success stories of the last 30 years, including Microsoft, Zappos, Patagonia, and Oracle.

Inc., the nation’s leading journal of entrepreneurship, compiles its annual list based on a rigid set of criteria, including a $2 million revenue floor in 2008, to evaluate companies in all industries across the spectrum and ranks them according to percentage revenue growth over the last three years. Even in the midst of some of the fastest-growing fields in the marketplace, including computer software, health care, and telecommunications, InkHead stood out as a top performer with an astonishing 91% growth from 2006 to the present.

The fact that a promotional-products distributor can perform this well in a sluggish economy and in an industry that as a whole has seen dramatic downturn is testimony to the effectiveness of InkHead’s simple business model: offer a wide selection of products, bring cutting-edge technology to the task of maintaining an intuitive and user-friendly online shopping environment, and back it all up with smart and responsive customer service. Nor are the executives and staff at InkHead looking to rest on their accomplishments -- new innovations are rolling out on InkHead. com all the time.

Since its inception in 2003, InkHead has shown phenomenal growth and uncommon resilience in a challenging economy. With an amazing 522 percent growth rate through 2006, InkHead was declared the second fastest growing distributor in the advertising specialties industry by the Advertising Specialty Institute. InkHead also garnered praise from Inc. Magazine by being ranked No. 35 in the Top 100 Businesses in Atlanta and No. 64 in the Top 100 Business Services Companies.

"Plastic Wrap is Not a Condom - STD Myths Exposed"

"Plastic Wrap is Not a Condom - STD Myths Exposed"

Award-winning STD Testing Service provides the facts with video 'stories'

Chicago (Vocus) October 21, 2009

STD Test Express (www. STDTestExpress. com), the online leader in STD testing services, unveils new "myth-busting" videos on its award-winning website. With a balance of accurate STD information and an engaging approach to sharing it, new videos expose Top STD Myths that exist in U. S. culture which may discourage sexually-active adults from critical health screening.

"With 19 million new reported STD cases each year, there's clearly a disconnect between facts and behavior around sexual health," says Michelle Sobel, co-founder of Analyte Media, the publisher of STDTestExpress. com. "An estimated 65 million US citizens are living with an STD - about 1 in 4 will contract an STD in their lifetime. There's so much misinformation out there. We want to open up the dialogue by trading fact for myths while helping people access a private and affordable way to get tested for STDs."

Site Uses Personal Videos to Engage and Educate Consumers

Sobel, who also co-founded of Emmi Solutions, one of the most awarded health communications products in the industry, understands the impact of personalizing information to help people make positive actions that improve their health.

"The fact is, people have many ways to hear and see healthcare information, but against all the media messages in a day, does it sink in?" asks Sobel. "STD Text Express showcases very human, personal stories that help people realize they aren't the only ones who've ever believed an absolute myth when it comes to how you can contract or infect someone with a sexually transmitted disease. Using video and distributing via the Web is a great way to expose myths and say, 'Here are the facts. Be smart, get tested.' "

VIDEO

The Top 10 Myths about Sexually Transmitted Diseases:

1. You can't get an STD from oral sex.
2. You can only get herpes when your partner is having an outbreak that you can see.
3. If you have an STD, you'll see it, feel it and know it.
4. Only promiscuous people and "players" get STDs.
5. If you have sex in a pool or hot tub, the chlorine will kill anything and everything.
6. If you don't have a condom, use plastic wrap.
7. Only young people get STDs.
8. Skin to skin contact isn't enough. You can only get an STD from semen.
9. The Pill prevents STDs.
10.  Chlamydia and gonorrhea are no big deal and aren't harmful.

STD Test Express provides online access to STD testing and follow-up healthcare counseling. Service is fast, private and affordable with a full range of individual tests, test panels and even a test plan with pricing to encourage testing now - and in 90 days as a follow up.

The service, recognized by the American Social Health Association (ASHA) for its positive messaging around sexual health, encourages people to stop wondering and start actively managing their sexual health. Earlier this year STD Test Express won a WebAward for Standard of Excellence in the category of Healthcare. Other 2009 WebAward Healthcare winners included McKesson Corporation, Walgreens, Livestrong, and Mayo Clinic Health Solutions.

The MedZilla Report for November 2010 -- Unemployment Steady Despite Job Creation

The MedZilla Report for November 2010 -- Unemployment Steady Despite Job Creation

With the entire U. S. focused on upcoming midterm elections, it seemed as though there was little time for the job market to change -- unemployment remained steady and health care job creation continued at its 2010 rate, adding 24,000 new positions.

Marysville, WA (Vocus) November 17, 2010

With the entire U. S. focused on the November 2 midterm election, the job front remained relatively quiet in October. The unemployment rate remained at 9.6 percent, and according to outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, layoffs were only up about two percent in October, with only 2,000 of them coming from the pharmaceutical industry -- a drop of more than 60 percent. Meanwhile, health care job creation stayed on the same pace it has been for all of 2010, adding about 24,000 new positions.

According to MedZilla. com, the internet's most established source for pharmaceutical, health care, and biotechnology job postings, despite all the new positions added, the number active job searches performed by candidates did not change from September to October. However, a significant number of new jobs were posted across multiple categories -- including sales representatives. "Given how tough things have been for sales reps, it's good to see companies posting jobs again," said Del Johnston, MedZilla's Client Relations Manager. Additionally, companies increased active searches for sales candidates by almost two percent in October. Geographically, candidates in Michigan got the most good news, as company searches for new employees in all fields were up almost six percent. Significant increases were also recorded in Ohio and Connecticut, while only companies California, New Jersey, and Illinois cut back their search efforts more than one percent in October.

The most significant personnel reduction announcement in October came from UMass Memorial Health Care, who planned to cut back by 350 people using a combination of layoffs, open positions, and overtime restrictions (boston. com, 10/13/10). The cuts will include nurses. Some nurses will also be among the 43 laid off from the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (beckershospitalreview. com, 10/25/10). And, in layoffs that are being attributed at least in part to fears over funding from the health care reform bill, 23 jobs are being eliminated at Principal Financial Group as they stop selling health insurance (dallasnews. com, 10/20/10).

One area that has faced continuous job cuts as hospitals and health systems have tried to save money has been mental and residential care -- and, in fact, more cuts were announced this month, in Tioga County, Pennsylvania (wetmtv. com, 10/19/10). "The repercussions of those job cuts are starting to show,"said John Burkhardt, Director of Operations for MedZilla. com, citing an article in tulsaworld. com (10/31/10) about how more than 70 percent of those needing mental health or substance abuse support in Oklahoma are having difficulty finding the care they need because of cutbacks. "Given that we're now seeing patient caregivers such as nurses becoming victims of job reduction, what will happen in a year or two after more health systems are forced to cut doctors and nurses?"

Despite this worrisome news, though, jobs are still being created. About 1,200 new neuroscience jobs are headed to Indianapolis -- Clarian Health has committed to a new facility encompassing six blocks of the city's downtown area (indystar. com, 10/14/10). Indianapolis will also benefit from a professional service center coming from Ascension Health, which will bring in 500 more jobs (ibj. com, 10/29/10). Meanwhile, pharmacy jobs in Connecticut are projected to grow at a rate of 17 percent through 2018 (theday. com, 10/17/10), and in Michigan home health care is expected to surge 44 percent through 2018 (freep. com, 10/10/10).

At the same time, some believe job creation might be seemingly slowed due to older workers remaining in the workforce (moneywatch. bnet. com, 10/6/10). "Although it seems like older employees are getting the axe pretty often," Johnston said, "many of them already entrenched in managerial roles are hanging on as long as possible because they're concerned about their retirement plans or they want to retain their health care as long as possible." This also creates difficulties for job seekers in their 30s who were laid off amid a cost-cutting purge, short-circuiting a promising career. "We always recommend keeping your network at the ready and your resume updated," Burkhardt said. "You never know if a layoff is going to affect you, and we've seen time and again that no one is one hundred percent safe."

Body Balance Opens Golf Fitness Center in New Dallas Location

Body Balance Opens Golf Fitness Center in New Dallas Location

Body Balance for Performance Dallas has taken golf fitness to a new level with a new location, cutting-edge equipment and advanced golf-specific certifications.

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) September 13, 2007

Body Balance for Performance Dallas has taken golf fitness to a new level with a new location, cutting-edge equipment and advanced golf-specific certifications.

A pioneer in golf fitness training (http://dallas. fitgolf. com), Body Balance for Performance first opened a way for people to get fit for golf in the Dallas area more than seven years ago.

"After years of being in private practice as a physical therapist, I was looking for a way to help golfers like my husband feel and play better consistently," said Teena Petree, owner of Body Balance for Performance-Dallas. "At that time, Body Balance for Performance seemed like a good solution."

After that decision was made, Teena and her staff have worked diligently to impress the same upon golfers throughout the metroplex.

Successful in their pursuit, Body Balance for Performance, once operated out of Summit Physical Therapy, now has 1,500 square feet of space dedicated to golfers. The space sits right beside the rehab and is filled with cutting-edge technology specifically for golfers, such as the Dynamic Balance System, the Body Motion System and the Explanar.

"The number of golfers who heed our advice has dramatically increased," said Heather Parker, a golf fitness specialist and PTA. "We know the body and how it relates to the way they swing the club. To ensure that we provide the best possible care, we have been forced to expand upon our knowledge, technology and location."

Body Balance for Performance maintains that the body is the one piece of equipment that players will always use. Knowledgeable that there are things in every golfer's bag that can be replaced, the body is not one of them. The goal of Body Balance for Performance is to maximize the efficiency of the body through a 3R approach that involves releasing, re-educating and rebuilding a stronger, more flexible body.

"If the shaft of your club was bent, you probably would opt not to play with it," said Parker. "In that instance as with the body, structure governs performance. Improving spinal alignment will improve a golfer's performance while decreasing the risk of injury. That's what we do."

For more information about Body Balance for Performance, visit them online at http://dallas. fitgolf. com (http://dallas. fitgolf. com).
