Alarming Increase In Insurance Fraud

Alarming Increase In Insurance Fraud

Fraudulent claims have doubled in the first three months of 2009 as firms struggle to keep their heads above water in the current recession according to reports coming from Allianz Insurance.

Flint, United Kingdom (PRWEB) May 8, 2009

Fraudulent claims have doubled in the first three months of 2009 as firms struggle to keep their heads above water in the current recession according to reports coming from Allianz Insurance. The insurer says it has identified and rejected £5m of false claims in the first quarter of the year compared to only half that amount in 2008.

A spokesman for Staveley Head, one of the UK's leading van insurance (http://www. staveleyhead. co. uk/van) brokers, said, "This confirms the figures recently reported by the Association of British Insurers which indicate that companies have been increasingly willing to submit fraudulent claims since the financial crisis began nearly a year ago. The ABI has reported that fraud thrives in a recession so insurers are intensifying their crackdown on insurance cheats. False claims add an extra £40 to the average premium so the more difficult we make it for the villains the less premium honest people will have to pay."

Roy Hebburn, Allianz divisional claims manager, is reported as saying, "Small businesses should be aware that their employees and others - customers or even business associates - are facing economic hardship right now. As a result the temptation to commit insurance fraud is significantly greater."

Fraudulent claims are increasing in every insurance sector, but by far the worst compromised is motor insurance which accounts for nearly 50% of the value of the total claims made.

A major warning comes from Nick Starling, the ABI's director of general insurance and health, who reportedly said, "Cheating on your insurance really does not pay - you will get caught."

Staveley Head (http://www. staveleyhead. co. uk) is one of the leading van insurance providers in the country, and will give you all the advice and assistance you need regarding this matter, including a very competitive van insurance quote, if you log onto their website, you can even take out van insurance (http://www. staveleyhead. co. uk/van) online.

Aethlon Medical Announces Hepatitis-C Clinical Trial Site

Aethlon Medical Announces Hepatitis-C Clinical Trial Site

Aethlon Medical, Inc. (OTCBB: AEMD) announced today that Qualtran LLC, a contract research organization (CRO) managing biocompatibility studies and clinical trials for Aethlon in India, has advised the Company that the Apollo Hospital, New Delhi has been retained as a sponsor site for Aethlon's forthcoming Hepatitis-C (HCV) clinical trials in India.

SAN DIEGO, CA (PRWEB) June 11, 2005

Aethlon Medical, Inc. (OTCBB: AEMD) announced today that Qualtran LLC, a contract research organization (CRO) managing biocompatibility studies and clinical trials for Aethlon in India, has advised the Company that the Apollo Hospital, New Delhi has been retained as a sponsor site for Aethlon's forthcoming Hepatitis-C (HCV) clinical trials in India. "The Apollo Hospital is undisputedly the most prestigious multi-specialty hospital in India and is the largest corporate hospital outside of the United States," stated Mr. Sandeep Malik, President of Qualtran.

Dr. Vijay Kher, Senior Consultant of Nephrology at Apollo Hospital has been retained as the Principal Investigator for the trial. Dr. Kher, who has over 30 years of clinical experience, has been the recipient of numerous medical awards, and is credited with over 100 scientific publications. Following a Clinical and Research fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit and the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Kher served as a visiting professor to several Universities, including the University of Cincinnati, Loyola University, Rutgers, and the University of Chicago.

Aethlon Chairman & CEO, James A. Joyce, stated, "The unfortunate reality is that 50% of Hepatitis-C patients who initiate the current standard of care fail this exceptionally toxic treatment regimen." Joyce continued, "We clearly envision that our Hemopurifier(TM) treatment technology will improve patient outcomes as an adjunctive therapy, and will serve as an effective disease management tool as a stand alone treatment. In this regard, I thank our colleagues in India for providing us the opportunity to treat patients who are infected with this progressive disease," concluded Joyce.

Aethlon further disclosed that biocompatibility studies of the Hemopurifier are under way, and the Company anticipates that the formal initiation of the trial will occur in mid-July. The near term goal will be to demonstrate safety and observe early efficacy markers, including viral load reduction as a result of the direct clearance of circulating HCV by the Hemopurifier. The patient treatment protocols developed for the trial were designed through a cooperative effort between Aethlon researchers and its regulatory advisors in both India and the United States. According to the World Health Organization, HCV is a global disease with approximately 170 million persons or 3% of the world's population infected.

Myca Health Inc. Announces a Strategic Investment by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Venture Fund and Sandbox Industries

Myca Health Inc. Announces a Strategic Investment by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Venture Fund and Sandbox Industries

Myca Health Inc., the leader and innovator in web-based health care platforms for health practices, today announced a strategic $5 million investment in the company by BlueCross BlueShield Venture Partners LP and Sandbox Industries. Myca Health has developed a platform for physicians and patients, MycaHub, that delivers a set of automated tools, intuitive interfaces, integrated systems, and the capacity for doctor and patient to engage in real time, any time, online or offline.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) October 7, 2009

Myca Health Inc., the leader and innovator in web-based health care platforms for health practices, today announced a strategic $5 million investment in the company by BlueCross BlueShield Venture Partners LP and Sandbox Industries.

Myca Health has developed a platform for physicians and patients, MycaHub, that delivers a set of automated tools, intuitive interfaces, integrated systems, and the capacity for doctor and patient to engage in real time, any time, online or offline.

"Today, physicians are overwhelmed and frustrated by the administrative burden of practice. Patients are equally frustrated by the lack of access and poor communications that seems to be part of visiting the doctor. We set about to change that," said Nathanial Findlay, CEO of Myca Health. "We've created a proprietary technology that for the first time harnesses the power of social networks and provider management tools to deliver something that really has the power to improve health care."

Everything about MycaHub is designed to simplify the engagement between a provider and the patient, let the physician concentrate on care and enable a higher quality of practice. MycaHub seamlessly integrates with today's communication tools like PDAs and smart phones, as well as remote monitoring devices and leading Electronic Health Records solutions, ensuring a seamless flow of both patient communication and data.

"We saw in Myca a company and a platform dedicated to the needs of physicians and patients," said Paul Brown, Managing Director of BlueCross BlueShield Ventures. "MycaHub is an innovative and effective way to increase access and satisfaction for Blue Cross Blue Shield members, and to enable physicians to do what they do best--provide care."

MycaHub, flexible and scalable, is as relevant to the smallest primary care practice as it is to large group practices, corporate care clinics and hospital-run clinics. Through Hello Health, a wholly-owned business that provides a practice and business solution for micro-practices, and larger practice applications being developed for Ascension Health and Qualcomm, Myca has brought to market a web-based healthcare platform that works.

The strategic investment has been made jointly by BlueCross BlueShield Venture Partners and by Sandbox Industries. "We're excited to be able to accelerate the adoption of MycaHub. We believe Myca's platform will increase quality of care while reducing cost," said Matt Downs, Managing Partner of Sandbox Industries.

"We are delighted and honored by the decision to invest by BlueCross BlueShield Ventures and Sandbox Industries," said Mr. Findlay. "They share our vision of a revitalized health care experience for both doctors and patients, one that is at the heart of the reinvention of care for all Americans."

About Myca Health Inc.

Myca is the power behind a revolution in healthcare. We're creating web-based platforms that work to positively transform the healthcare experience for providers and patients.

We started by questioning why the approach to care seemed locked in a decades-old mindset; paper-based, uncommunicative, inefficient and simply not rewarding for doctor and patient alike. We then tapped into the practical needs and wants of the marketplace - physicians, patients, administrators, and insurers - to guide the development and application set of the MycaHub technology. Five years later our proprietary technology is being adopted by customers of all sizes, from small practices to large hospital systems, each taking advantage of the MycaHub technology to create a patient-centered health care experience that results in a higher quality of care.

Our focus on helping physicians adopt and adapt to new methods of practice has led to the creation of supporting ventures such as Hello Health, a highly-publicized new primary care business model powered by MycaHub, and Hello Health University, in-person and online learning that help physicians transition to practice emabled by MycaHub.

Privately-owned, Myca has a seasoned world-class management team with highly complementary experience in medicine, technology management, product development, finance, sales and business development.

Unicare Life and Health Insurance Company and the Policy Store Want to Help You Stop Smoking by Making This Information Available

This new quit line is free and was announced at a press conference by Health and Human Resources Secretary Tommy G Thompson. The quit line is a nationwide toll-free number which lets individuals place a call, which is routed to a local cessation counselor. The counselor then individualizes services that are appropiate by making plans and schedules and providing information about the use of nicotine replacement therapy. The counselors can answer questions and inform callers about other local smoking cessation programs.

(PRWEB) December 9, 2004

Secretary Tommy G. Thompson has set up this toll free number as a part of a broader initiative designed to help Americans quit smoking. You are probably aware of the facts that tobacco kills 440,000 American smokers each year. There are approximately 46 million US smokers. 70% of those smokers want to quit but have trouble doing it alone. Studies have shown that the quitlines can double or in some cases even triple the chances of successfully quitting smoking.

IQMax Expands Suite of Intelligent Mobile Solutions with IQRounds™

IQMax Expands Suite of Intelligent Mobile Solutions with IQRounds™

Capitalizing on the companyÂ’s industry leading mobile suite of dictation and charge capture applications, IQMax announced today their new inpatient mobile clinical results solution. IQRounds will provide care givers with easy, anywhere, anytime access to their inpatientsÂ’ clinical results and other pertinent patient data on their PDA.

Charlotte, NC (PRWEB) February 11, 2005

Capitalizing on the companyÂ’s industry leading mobile suite of dictation and charge capture applications, IQMax announced today their new inpatient mobile clinical results solution. IQRounds will provide care givers with easy, anywhere, anytime access to their inpatientsÂ’ clinical results and other pertinent patient data on their PDA.

When physicians make their inpatient rounds, they are typically dependent on a computer workstation or the paper chart to gain access to the most current results and updates from lab tests, radiology results, vitals, input/output, medications, etc. The challenge with workstations and paper charts is their limited accessibility.

While some hospitals have implemented wireless mobile (cart based) workstations and some have placed workstations in each patient room, most have not. These PCs, while enhancing accessibility, are typically bulky and shared between multiple patients and care givers.

For those institutions that are still primarily using paper charts, the accessibility challenges, along with maintaining timely updates to the record, grow exponentially over the computer based record.

The ultimate challenge is providing access to patient care results when the provider is away from the patient’s location. “IQRounds provides the perfect solution to this challenge,” says Paul Adkison, CEO of IQMax. “Our current patient centric, mobile solutions have significantly improved the work flow of care givers in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Since the majority of our users round at one or more hospitals, they have been asking for mobile access to their inpatient clinical results. With IQRounds, they will now have this access, anywhere, anytime.”

Scheduled for commercial availability in the second quarter of 2005, IQMax is currently seeking additional pre-release hospital partners.

“We will have several major institutions implemented prior to our general release date,” says Chris Harmon, CTO for IQMax. “By doing so, our pre-release partners will help us to refine our deployment processes while they will benefit from early implementation plus ongoing input to product functionality.”

IQRounds will operate in a wired, wireless and wide area wireless environment and will run on PocketPC and Palm OS PDA devices. Implementing IQRounds and all other IQMax solutions can be accomplished through the companyÂ’s ASP (IQAnywhere) or on their premise server solution (IQEnterprise).

Revolutionary New Tinnitus Technologies Now Available in US

Revolutionary New Tinnitus Technologies Now Available in US

Canadian software developer, Spectral Visualization and Development (SVD), releases new tinnitus treatment software after years of testing in Canada and abroad.

(PRWEB) June 17, 2004

“Over 50 million North American adults suffer from tinnitus, often associated with ringing-in-the-ears,” said Dennis Woo, PhD, Vice President of Audiological Products at Spectral Visualization and Development (SVD) Inc in New Brunswick. “We’re sure that our new software, Quiescence, will play a lead role in alleviating much of that suffering.”

Quiescence is a tinnitus management technology that measures the pitch and intensity of tinnitus more precisely and reliably than any other product on the market. “It improves the treatment of tinnitus,” said Dr. Woo, “and paves the way to the development of still newer treatments.”

Quiescence requires no special hardware and runs on standard desktop computers, making it easily accessible to healthcare professionals. “It’s a great tool,” said Dr. Ravi Sockalingham, PhD, of Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia. “There is no other tool that allows the clinician to match the frequency of the tinnitus and mask it so accurately and effectively.”

Before its release in the United States (after receiving FDA permission to market in the US), Quiescence was tested in Canada and abroad with positive results. “This program helps a patient to learn how to gain control of their tinnitus,” said Dr. Dennis Herx of Audiology Associates in Nova Scotia.

Audiologists use Quiescence in a variety of ways to enhance their tinnitus treatments. For example, they would use Quiescence to treat tinnitus by playing a sound similar to the patient’s tinnitus sound. This causes the tinnitus sound to temporarily disappear by desensitizing the patient to it. That temporary period could be long enough for the tinnitus sufferer to get some sleep. “The constant ringing is enough to cause anxiety, depression and - in extreme cases - suicidal tendencies,” said Dr. Woo. “Even a short break from the sound may be therapeutic.”

“In the time I have had this software,” said Brenda Walsh, and audiologist at the Bancroft Hearing and Tinnitus Center in Ontario, “the majority of patients have experienced a softening of to complete silence of their tinnitus for up to 18 hours”

Quiescence allows audiologists to precisely target just the narrow band tinnitus pitch, thereby drowning it out but still allowing the broad band of sound, including speech, to be unaffected. “It can even be used to fine-tune digital hearing aids used by tinnitus sufferers,” said Dr. Woo.

Tinnitus is the phantom sound that a person perceives without any physical sound source. It is a legitimate medical problem, but it’s often overlooked because it’s difficult to quantify. Many tinnitus patients are simply told to “get used to it”. According to the American Tinnitus Association, over 16% of the adult population has chronic tinnitus which translates to over 50 million people alone in North America. Statistics also show that, of this population, 12% of the tinnitus sufferers have severe cases.

Since 1996, SVD has been developing software products arising from the application of digital signal processing technologies. The company initially became involved with tinnitus when Dr. Woo was contacted by a tinnitus sufferer whose condition was so extreme that she couldnÂ’t work and was beginning had made a suicide attempt. As a result of working with the patient, SVD released the first integrated and fully digital PC-based audiometer and tinnitus manager in 2001.

More information on Quiescence is available at SVDÂ’s web site (svdinc. com). which offers a free trial version of the software, or by contacting the company at 506-459-5551.

MVP Health Care’s Member Wellness Program Moving to Reward Achievement of Biometric Guidelines

MVP Health Care’s Member Wellness Program Moving to Reward Achievement of Biometric Guidelines

MVP Health Care is evolving its WellStyle Rewards member wellness incentive program to an outcome-based model that will reward members for demonstrating the achievement of recommended health guidelines and other evidence-based measures such as body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar on a health risk assessment form.

Schenectady, NY (Vocus) November 23, 2010

MVP Health Care is evolving its WellStyle Rewards member wellness incentive program to an outcome-based model that will reward members for demonstrating the achievement of recommended health guidelines and other evidence-based measures such as body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar on a health risk assessment form.

“We are leading the move to an incentive design that rewards members who achieve recommended health guidelines, proven to be associated with reduced long-term health risks,” says Augusta Martin, MVP’s Corporate Vice President of Marketing Innovation and Commercial Business. “This model will allow us to better reward members who practice healthy habits all year long” Martin said.

Health measures such as body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and refraining from tobacco use are strong indicators of an individual’s risk for developing chronic diseases such as diabetes and many forms of cancer.

”I encourage my patients to complete health screenings as part of routine preventive care. I am excited because now my patients can earn rewards for getting screened and achieving important health goals” said Joseph DiPoala, M. D., an MVP-participating physician in Rochester, N. Y. “This is great because screenings are so important in monitoring health, preventing disease and knowing when I need to work with my patients to get their results into recommended ranges,” he said.

“We know that all of our members may be at different points along the continuum of health and well-being, and we believe new program includes all the elements needed to recognize members who take an active role in their health and to demonstrate year-over-year population health improvements”, Martin said.

While members can still earn points redeemable for rewards for completing PHAs (Personal Health Assessments) or completing coaching programs, beginning in 2011, members have additional earning opportunities for demonstrating certain biometric measures — such as cholesterol, blood pressure and body mass index (BMI) — that fall within optimal ranges. Rewards are available for members whose biometrics are not optimal but are in acceptable ranges. Members also can receive rewards for staying tobacco free. As a reasonable accommodation, chronically ill patients who enroll in an MVP condition health management program can be rewarded for that participation as well.

Founded in 1983, MVP Health Care is a regional, not-for-profit health insurer based in Schenectady, N. Y. Through its operating subsidiaries, it provides fully insured and self-funded employer health benefits plans, dental insurance, and ancillary products, such as flexible-spending accounts, to 750,000 subscribers in New York State, Vermont and New Hampshire. Smoke Alarm - Children Smoking in School - Parents Fight Back

Smoke Alarm - Children Smoking in School - Parents Fight Back

Parents Fight back, and find out that their children are smoking as young as 11 years old in schools

London (PRWEB) April 23, 2006

Children young as 11 are probably already smoking at school. A new product detects nicotine in children and adults and also second-hand smoke exposure

TobacAlert. co. uk has launched its UK and Europe to help parents identify if their children have been smoking, or been in a potentially dangerous smoke environment.

Most parents find out after 1 year if their child has started smoking, TobacAlert can help parents stop this problem before their children are addicted.

The TobacAlert product is an easy-to-use, cost-effective method of testing for second-hand smoke exposure. Public awareness of the health risks posed by exposure to second-hand smoke continues to grow worldwide. In February, the U. K. government proposed a ban on smoking in public places and work places. To date, more than 120 countries have signed on as parties to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control which requires the adoption of effective measures providing for protection from second hand smoke exposure in workplaces and public places.

Shocking Facts From Cancer Research UK

Each day 450 children in the UK take up smoking. By the age of 11, one third of children have experimented with smoking. And by 15 around one in four teenagers are regular smokers.  Since the 1980s girls have been more likely to smoke regularly than boys.

TobacAlert tests Nicotine levels direct from a smoker and also tests for second-hand smoke exposure in minutes without the need for instruments, equipment or specialised training.

TobacAlert is available in the UK at www. tobacalert. co. uk

The ability of TobacAlert to measure second-hand smoke exposure has been successfully put to the test by reporters, as reported in the London Sunday Telegraph, New York Daily News, and the and Melbourne, Australia's The Sunday Herald Sun.

The site also has a Forum feature for Parents and Children to Name and Shame Schools who do nothing about pupils that smoke. The Tobacalert. co. uk is all about Self help.

Lahey Clinic North Shore Launches New ER Campaign

Lahey Clinic North Shore Launches New ER Campaign

Manasian, Inc. has launched a new advertising campaign for Lahey Clinic Medical Center, North Shore’s emergency department services. The campaign’s goal is to increase awareness of Lahey North’s extensive emergency room services and convenient location in Peabody, MA.

Boston, MA (PRWEB) April 20, 2010

The campaign continues using the I Want Lahey, campaign theme established with the launch of the cancer awareness campaign in January 2010.

“Lahey North ER has the distinct advantage of having access to 39 specialties and on premise services including inpatient care. Most ER visits have to do with life’s mishaps, rather than just life threatening situations, so we tried to capture what can happen in everyday life – and when you need an ER room, Lahey North is an exceptional place located right in your area.” explains Jean Manasian, President.

In 2009, the ER was expanded and upgraded as part of Lahey’s 65,000-square foot facility and clinical services expansion. It was redesigned for better patient flow, with special emphasis on process improvement to handle patients with lesser acuity illness and injury.

Lahey has had the only Emergency Room in Peabody for more than a decade, a role that the Clinic is proud to fill. “Our Emergency Department is a great resource to people all over the North Shore,” says Robert Schneider, senior vice president. “It’s the closest ER for many area residents, and they come here with the assurance of Lahey Clinic’s exceptional patient care.”

The campaign consists of print advertising, inserts and cinema advertising running at theaters geographically close to the hospital.

Lyme Disease Diagnostic Procedures can 'Test' Patience of Patients: Time for Lyme Founders, Experts Discuss Symptoms and Importance of Early, Accurate Diagnosis

Approximately 18,000 cases are diagnosed each year. But experts agree that the actual number of people struggling with Lyme is much higher. Greenwich, CT (PRWEB) June 2, 2007

Lyme Disease and other tick-borne illnesses are on the rise, particularly here in the Northeast, which is considered a high-risk location for Lyme by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Approximately 18,000 cases are diagnosed each year in the United States - a total that's more than doubled since 1990 - but experts agree that the actual number of people struggling with Lyme and other tick-borne illnesses may be much higher. That's because there is no diagnostic test that provides a patient with a definitive diagnosis for these diseases.

"A diagnosis of Lyme Disease or another tick-borne illness is usually a 'process of elimination' diagnosis, based on both the likelihood of exposure and the ruling out of other conditions that cause the same symptoms," explains Diane Blanchard, co-president and co - founder of Time for Lyme, Inc. - a research, education and advocacy group. "After this process, a series of blood tests is conducted, and the results can confirm only the probability that the patient has been infected with Lyme or another tick-borne illness," Blanchard adds. Time For Lyme and the Lyme Disease Association recently lead the way in endowing the first Lyme and Tick-Borne Diseases Research Center at Columbia University Medical in New York City dedicated to the study of chronic Lyme disease.

Symptoms mimic many illnesses
The early stage of Lyme Disease is problematic for doctors, because the symptoms mirror those of hundreds of other illnesses, from fibromyalgia to lupus. "The initial symptoms of Lyme Disease and other tick-borne illnesses include flu-like feelings, headache, stiff neck, fever, muscle aches, and fatigue," says Dr. Brian A. Fallon, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and director of the newly opened Lyme and Tick-borne Diseases Research Center.. "Even the telltale Lyme Disease rash, called erythema migrans (EM), can differ widely from patient to patient," Dr. Fallon adds. For example, some may find a large, spreading "bulls-eye" rash of alternating red and flesh-colored rings, while others may find a small, simple red ring around the bite site. On patients with darker skin, the rash may appear more like a bruise. Complicating matters further, the rash only appears on about 60% of patients, and can take up to a month after infection to appear; the remaining 40% of patients experience little or no skin involvement at all."

"The irony is that early diagnosis is the key to treating Lyme Disease and other tick-borne illnesses in their 'acute' stages, when the disease has not spread throughout the body and antibiotics are most likely to be effective at eradicating the bacteria that causes the illnesses," Dr. Fallon explains. "Yet, because there is not a definitive diagnostic tool for these diseases, it is difficult to obtain an early medical conclusion in patients who do not present with a clear EM rash or an embedded tick," he notes.

The next steps to diagnosis
Once doctors have ruled out other causes for early symptoms, the next step is a series of blood tests designed to determine the probability that Lyme Disease is present. However, the tests cannot provide a definitive diagnosis, because medical science has yet to find a way to identify the actual bacteria (B. burgdorferi) that causes the disease. In fact, one of the primary goals of the Lyme and Tick-Borne Diseases Research Center is to focus on identifying a gold-standard test for Lyme. Currently, the tests look for antibodies in the bloodstream that indicate the patient's immune system has been fighting off the B. burgdorferi infection. Two of these "ELISA" (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) tests have been approved to check for these bacteria - the whole cell sonicate ELISA, which has many false positives and negatives, and the C6 Lyme Peptide, which is widely considered the most accurate of the two. "These tests are an important tool for diagnosis," Dr. Fallon says. "However, by the time the patient has built up antibodies, the infection is likely to be in its second disseminated stage, making it a more difficult, often chronic condition to treat."

Once an ELISA test is returned with either a positive or uncertain result, doctors usually perform a second and more accurate blood test called the Western Immunoblot test, or Western blot. In this test, the patient's immune system response is translated to a visual of colored bands and "blots" that indicate whether the B. burgdorferi antibodies are present. Again, however, the test cannot definitively confirm a diagnosis of Lyme or other tick-borne illnesses.

Confusion lingers after diagnosis
Even after a Lyme Disease diagnosis, patients are often confronted with a confusing cadre of information, recommendations and prognoses. "Depending upon the stage of the illness, patients may find a short course of antibiotics can effectively eradicate the bacteria, or they may experience long-term, chronic symptoms of the disease," Dr. Fallon explains. These symptoms, though rare, can range from severe arthritis to persistent numbness and tingling, from heart disease to lung and liver problems, and from loss of concentration and short-term memory to mood changes and psychosis.

"The good news is that medical research continues, and there are many more resources than ever before available for patients diagnosed today with Lyme Disease and other tick-borne illnesses," Time for Lyme's Diane Blanchard notes. Many of these resources and links are available through the Time for Lyme web site at www. timeforlyme. org. "The best advice for these patients, as for all patients diagnosed with a serious illness, is that they become their own best health advocates, that they become aware of the treatments and options available, and that they realize the unreliability of the tests," Blanchard concludes.

About Time for Lyme
Time For Lyme is an organization dedicated to eliminating the devastating effects of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illness. Our mission is to prevent the spread of disease, develop definitive diagnostic tools and effective treatments, and to ultimately find a cure for tick-borne illness by supporting research, education, and the acquisition and dissemination of information. In addition, we will continue to act as advocates for Lyme disease sufferers and their families through support of legislative reform on the federal, state and local levels. Student Involvement is Critical (http://africa. eckerd. edu/campus-life-component):
Eckerd College Organization of Students (ECOS) student government and Eckerd's African Interest Group have been at the helm of student-coordinated activities for the Initiative. "We have already hosted awareness events, fundraisers and film screenings to boost momentum for 2010," said Eckerd junior and ECOS President Lauren DeLalla. "Our focus on Africa highlights the fact that Eckerd students have been interested in social justice issues, here and abroad, since the College was founded fifty years ago."

The Study of Africa is Cross-Disciplinary (http://africa. eckerd. edu/across-disciplines)
For William F. Felice, Professor of Political Science and Co-chair of the Eckerd-Africa Initiative, raising Africa's profile occurs across academic disciplines. "In addition to celebrating and honoring the diversity of African history and cultural heritage, we will explore issues related to war crimes and human rights, environment and human health, foreign policy and humanitarian aid, rebuilding and economic development, women and healthcare, and alternative energy sources for sustainable communities," said Professor Felice. "Eckerd's distinctive areas - the sciences, the arts, service-learning, and social justice - remain prevalent in our planning efforts."

John Prendergast, human rights activist and co-author of "Not On Our Watch," will anchor the Spring 2010 semester as a Visiting Scholar-in-Residence at Eckerd for two weeks in March. He will focus on the genocide in Darfur and southern Sudan; conflict minerals in eastern Congo; and child soldiers in northern Uganda. Author Dave Eggers and Valentino Achak Deng, a former Lost Boy from Sudan and subject of Eggers' book, "What Is the What," will anchor the Fall 2010 semester. "What Is the What" will be a required summer 2010 reading for the incoming freshman class.

With more than 60% of Eckerd's students traveling abroad during their Eckerd career, three student groups will travel to Africa during the January 2010 Winter Term - one group will study consumerism in Morocco, while the other two will do service-learning in Malawi, Ethiopia and Rwanda.

Thinking Globally and Acting Locally: Community Partnerships (http://africa. eckerd. edu/community-connections):
"While Eckerd will serve as the primary site for the majority of events, the generous support of our Community Partners have helped to transform the Initiative into a communitywide project," said Alizza Punzalan-Hall, Eckerd's Director of Community and Media Relations and Co-chair of the Eckerd-Africa Initiative. "Our strategy is to bring attention to global issues while highlighting the vital work of our local educational institutions, arts organizations and social services agencies."

Two photo installations curated by Chicago-based Art Works Projects will be on display at The Poynter Institute ("Congo/Women Portraits of War") and the Florida Holocaust Museum ("Darfur/Darfur"). The Studio@620 will display "Images from Ethiopia, Rwanda, Ghana, Malawi, and Uganda" by emerging photographer Bradley Ennis and freelance photojournalist Kristin Harrison from March 12 to 28. Ennis is a visual arts senior at Eckerd College; Harrison is a 2001 Eckerd graduate and former editor-in-chief for Women's Running Magazine.

Additional Community Partners include: USF St. Petersburg, Creative Clay, Community Tampa Bay, Community Action Stops Abuse (CASA), and the YWCA of Tampa Bay. Potential Community Partners should contact Ms. Punzalan-Hall (727-864-7978) for more information. Media Partners include WUSF Public Broadcasting and the St. Petersburg Times Fund.

Toronto, ON (PRWEB) November 18, 2010

Crave PR, a boutique PR agency in Toronto that specializes in food, wellness and lifestyle, is celebrating its first anniversary this month with the launch of a new practice for not-for-profit organizations. With experience ranging from patient advocacy and support groups to foundations to community health centres, Crave PR helps not-for-profits communicate effectively with their stakeholders. More information can be found at http://www. cravepr. com.

"Many not-for-profit organizations could benefit from an integrated and thoughtful communications strategy, especially as they begin to use social media tools to engage donors, sponsors, volunteers and the media," says Saskia Brussaard, President, Crave PR.

A boutique PR agency can help not-for-profits coordinate their PR, social media, marketing and fund raising activities into a more effective communications strategy.

"Social media tools are appealing to many not-for-profits who are looking for affordable ways to mobilize the community," adds Saskia Brussaard. "However, in this world of information overload, a well-designed PR strategy that takes into consideration all communication activities is vital."

The Allergy/Asthma Information Association (http://www. aaia. ca) hired Crave PR earlier this year to mobilize the allergy community for its annual fund raising event in May.

"Crave PR is helping us develop a cost-effective strategy that uses today's communication tools to engage the more than 12 million Canadians with allergies, asthma and anaphylaxis and to raise important funds for research and education," said Mary Allen, CEO, the Allergy/Asthma Information Association. "Crave PR cares and it shows in their work."

Did You Know: Thousands of Beloved Pets Will be Diagnosed with Diabetes in The U. S. This Year

Did You Know: Thousands of Beloved Pets Will be Diagnosed with Diabetes in The U. S. This Year

As November is Pet Diabetes Month, pet owners turn to the web to share stories and information, find ways to save their diabetic pets

Menlo Park, Calif. (PRWEB) November 13, 2006

Although it may come as a surprise, diabetes in pets is fairly common. In fact, out of the 120 million domestic cats and dogs in the U. S., 300,000 will be diagnosed with diabetes at some point in their lives. Many of these animals are abandoned or euthanized, as their owners believe they can do nothing to save them; however taking care of a diabetic pet is much easier, and less expensive, than some may think.

Wikia, Inc., the leading site for developing and hosting community-based wikis, today announced that The Pet Diabetes Wiki ( http://petdiabetes. wikia. com (http://petdiabetes. wikia. com)) offers pet owners meaningful and sometimes little known information that can help diabetic pets all over the world live full, healthy, and active lives.

Steve Rapaport, founder of the Pet Diabetes Wikia, has been studying and teaching others about feline diabetes since early 2005, when his own cat, Jock, was diagnosed with the disease. "Many vets discourage treatment of this very treatable condition and that's a shame," said Rapaport. "Pet diabetes is not a death sentence; people need to know that the necessary information is available to them on the web, and with as little as $50 a month, they can save their pet's life."

With over 250 articles written by knowledgeable pet owners and citing peer-reviewed researchers, The Pet Diabetes Wikia, with support from felinediabetes. com, is a valuable and accredited, free resource for those who need advice or guidance on how to take care of their diabetic pet. The site includes basic information about canine and feline diabetes, detailed case studies grouped by treatment and complications, comprehensive descriptions of all usable insulins worldwide, conditions and complications associated with pet diabetes, experiences of over 120 actual owners, and much more.

To learn more about the Pet Diabetes Wikia and/or to contribute information about treatment options or personal experiences with diabetic pets, please visit the Pet Diabetes Wikia online at: http://petdiabetes. wikia. com (http://petdiabetes. wikia. com)

About Wikia, Inc.

Since the site's launch in November 2004, over 2,000 Wikia have been created and edited by over 30,000 registered users. Wikia are already available in over 45 languages. Wikia already hosts several other health-related wikis, including: The Cancer Wikia ( http://en. cancer. wikia. com (http://en. cancer. wikia. com)) and The Psychology Wikia ( http://psychology. wikia. com (http://psychology. wikia. com)).

Wikia enables groups to share information, news, stories, media and opinions that fall outside the scope of an encyclopedia. Jimmy Wales and Angela Beesley launched Wikia in 2004 to provide community-based wikis inspired by the model of Wikipedia -- the free, open source encyclopedia founded by Jimmy Wales.

Wikia is committed to openness, inviting anyone to contribute web content. Authors retain their own copyrights and allow others to freely reuse their content under the GNU Free Documentation License, allowing widespread distribution of knowledge and ideas.

SPA INDEX REVIEWS THE WE CARE HOLISTIC HEALTH CENTER IN DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA

SPA INDEX REVIEWS THE WE CARE HOLISTIC HEALTH CENTER IN DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA

"I needed an experience which would cleanse my mind, body and spirit."

(PRWEB) November 21, 2003

The We Care Holistic Health Center ("We Care") in Desert Springs, California enjoys a favorable reputation as a holistic health care center with the Hollywood crowd, who have long appreciated both its private and intimate facilities, and its strict liquid-diet and colonic cleansing regimen.

Some guests hope for a panacea for an excessive lifestyle; other guests seek and find a spiritual restorative escape. At is core, however, We Care is less of a celebrity weekend detox camp than it is a group of individuals passionate about their programs and their guests. Those guests return to the Spa year after year.

Owner and nutritional expert Susana Lombardi and her daughter and partner, Susy Lombardi, describe We Care as "a popular hot spot for overworked corporate America, media executives, models, musicians, and actors, and the spiritually-minded and health-conscious around the globe."

"Naturally, we wanted a first-hand look at a popular spa which receives a good deal of popular press" said Kristina Fitzhugh, Editor of Spa Index. "More than that, however, we felt we needed a man's perspective; we wanted him to have little or no experience with alternative health methods; we wanted him fairly 'new' to the spa environment; and, we wanted someone who was willing and eager to seek out a new experience, but a little nervous, at the same time."

In October, Spa Index sent its UK-based field reviewer to We Care, and we are pleased to share his experience with our readers:

"After a grueling year spent in England, away from my usual Pacific Northwest environs, I ended this summer feeling tired, stressed and in need of something to 'kick start' my return to the United States. I needed more than just a week of 'R and R'; I was looking for an experience which would cleanse my mind, body and spirit.

We Care Holistic Health Center in Desert Springs, California has received quite a bit of favorable press from the 'Hollywood crowd' and, I was assured by a member of the Spa Index team that We Care's program fit precisely the criteria I was looking for -- something quiet, restful, clean, and restorative, with an emphasis on natural body care and nutrition.

Although I was skeptical because I had never fasted or cleansed (We Care's fasting / cleansing program is a major component of a week-long stay) it was time for me to expose myself to something new.

Upon arrival, the first thing which struck me was how intimate the Center actually is. We Care is a relatively small complex, but on spacious grounds. The cluster of buildings is on five acres in the Mojave Desert. The setting is serene and I found it to be quite relaxing -- I enjoyed wonderful sunrises over the surrounding mountains. The Center itself includes swimming pools, Jacuzzis, a medicine wheel, labyrinth, and several places where you can simply lounge and relax.

I selected the Plan A Package (Sunday to Sunday, 8 days, 7 nights) which includes accommodations, meals in the form of a liquid diet, 6 Colonics, 1 Lymphatic Massage, and 2 Detox Baths. My plan included a "Colony" room, which was modest, but sufficient for my needs. If you are looking for a 4 or 5 star hotel or Connoisseur Spa, We Care is not the place.

Although the website boasts 'spacious and fully stocked bathrooms', I found the bathroom was the least impressive element to the room. My room, for example, in a recently constructed building, had a bathtub, but only a small handheld shower attachment, rather than full step-in shower. All rooms have satellite televisions, telephones and air conditioning. Premium rooms have a special Moroccan flair with custom mosaic tiling. Deluxe and Colony rooms have VCR's.

I learned We Care is in the process of putting in mineral baths and mud baths, but currently did not have them on the premises. They did offer the complimentary use of a mineral bath facility not far from the Center, and I took advantage of it on a couple of occasions. The mineral baths were associated with a trailer park and although not fancy or modern, were very clean.

With respect to the health program, unfortunately, I missed the initial introduction, but was greeted by Candi Lee, We Care's receptionist and esthetician, and Tris Legacy, We Care's spa manager, who assisted me with check-in, provided an information packet, and explained the program to me. Candi also helped me to make my first detox beverage.

That first evening, an 'Opening Circle' was held where you were given the opportunity to meet fellow guests and staff, and ask additional questions before beginning the program. I noted some of the other guests of the Center were staying in rooms off-site, coming during the day for the health program.

Prior to arrival, We Care recommends you follow a preparation plan (provided in advance) in order to help your system adjust to the program. While I did not prepare to the extent recommended, I did cut out caffeine, which was my legal drug of choice, and found this to be sufficient for me.

The fasting program was charted out for me, so it was up to me to follow the instructions, although the staff was available if I needed assistance or had additional questions.

Following the fasting program on my own was not difficult, and in fact, by doing so, I feel like We Care empowered me to continue this program on my own, after leaving the Center.

The core liquid fasting program consists of hourly drinks meant to feed your cells, kidneys, liver, blood levels, and heart, and support digestion, to free up the bodyÂ’s energy, which can be used to purify and rebuild the system.

While on the fast, I felt hungry the first two days, but not unbearably so, and on the third day I felt horrible. I learned the dreaded "Day 3 syndrome" is common, as your body is being cleansed of toxins which have built up over time, and this third day is particularly notable as the system begins to flush those toxins. After Day 3 passed, I felt much better and found the remainder of my liquid fast to be both uneventful and productive.

As part of my plan, I received a daily colonic and a lymphatic massage once during my stay. The hourly beverages, colonics, and body treatments are each intended to work together to stimulate the lymph system, exfoliate dead skin cells, open pores, and cleanse the system in order to promote toxin release. The colonic is designed to cleanse the colon with gentle hydrotherapy -- a new procedure for me, and one which made me a little skeptical.

I learned from We Care that a colonic is a method of cleansing the colon and large intestine. It is similar to an enema in the sense that water is being introduced to the colon to wash out accumulated waste. However, a colonic is a deep cleanse of the entire large intestine, whereas an enema cleanses only the lowest part of the colon. A colonic is a clean and sanitary procedure and all tubes used for colonics at We Care are single-use, sanitized and disposable.

I found it uncomfortable at first, but not painful. Having said that, I was amazed by the results -- I had a feeling of well-being and cleanliness which made the initial discomfort worthwhile.

We Care also offers several types of massage, body and skin care therapies for an additional charge, including Reflexology, Sacred Stone Massage, Cellulite Treatments, Skin Care (a variety of facials), Body Scrubs, and Waxing. I received a number of spa therapies, and enjoyed them all.

Activities were scheduled throughout the week, including nutrition, yoga, meditation, walks and a variety of holistic healthcare seminars. These seminars were entirely voluntary, but I attended as many as I could. Guests need to be careful to ensure spa and health treatments are scheduled around those classes/seminars they would like to attend. Also offered are movement and dance classes, Ayurvedic medicine classes, hormone therapy, spiritual counseling, individualized nutritional counseling, hair analysis and other workshops.

The evening seminars discussed and introduced us to other therapies which were available (for an added cost), during the week. Although this initially struck me as a sales pitch, I did take a Breath work seminar and thought it was terrific - I felt fantastic afterward.

The people I met were the best part of my stay --the group was fantastic, each one sharing their own experiences, and the We Care staff was very helpful and worked hard to make my stay a pleasant one.

A week removed and having some time to reflect, I would do it again. The We Care experience opened my mind to new things and enhanced my awareness about nutrition, holistic health, and even people. I truly feel better. It is now up to me to take those things I learned and introduce them into my every day life." Contributed to Spa Index by Steve G.

Weekly plans for We Care are from $1790 and up. Please call the toll-free reservation line to schedule your fasting retreat and discuss our various rate plans. We Care's direct local number is (760) 251-2261. We Care strictly enforces a cancellation policy to ensure space and availability for guests.

How to Beat the Odds of the Second Leading Cause of Cancer Death in Men

How to Beat the Odds of the Second Leading Cause of Cancer Death in Men

Prostate Cancer Awareness Week (PCAW) will be held September 18 – 23, and will potentially save the lives of the men in our country. With more than 500 screening sites, there is no good excuse for men 35 and older (should they be African-American, who are at a higher risk than Caucasians, or have a family history of the disease) and all men over 40 to get checked.

Greenwood Village, Colo. (PRWEB) September 10, 2006

As the second leading cause of cancer death in American men, more than 230,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year. With more annual cases of prostate cancer than that of breast cancer among women, it is imperative that men get checked annually just as their female counterparts do.

In order to help save men’s lives, the non-profit Prostate Cancer Education Council (PCEC) was created in 1989 with a mission to get men checked. The PCEC is founded on the fact that prostate cancer is nearly 100 percent survivable if caught in its earliest stages. That is why every third week in September, they have coordinated free or low-cost screenings for millions of men across the United States.

As it is becoming better known that catching diseases in their early stages offer the best chances for survival, so is the fact that overall health awareness is essential to our well being. There are many factors that play into a man’s risk for prostate cancer, such as obesity and diet, as well as many questions related to the occurrence of prostate cancer and treatment options.

With all these factors playing into a man’s understanding of prostate cancer, which will take the lives of 30,000 men in 2006, PCEC has dedicated each day of PCAW to a topic relating to the disease. The days are:

Monday, Sept. 18 – General Prostate Cancer Awareness Day

Tuesday, Sept. 19 – Advanced Prostate Cancer Awareness Day

Wednesday, Sept. 20 – Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) Awareness Day

Thursday, Sept. 21 – Women, Families & Caregivers Day

Friday, Sept. 22 – Know Your Numbers (Cholesterol, Testosterone, Obesity & Nutrition) Day

Saturday, Sept. 23 – New Horizons (Innovation, Research & Upcoming Treatment Options) Day

“If only men would take annual screening for prostate cancer as seriously as women do for breast cancer,” comments Dr. E. David Crawford, Head of the Urologic Oncology Department at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, and Founder/Chairman of the PCEC. “Every three minutes an American male discovers he has prostate cancer. This is a staggering statistic, but palatable when tempered with early diagnosis when the disease is at its most curable stage.”

Screenings during PCAW take about 10 minutes and include a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test and a Digital Rectal Exam (DRE) done by a trained professional.

To find a PCAW screening site near you and for more information on prostate cancer, please visit www. pcaw. com or call toll free 866-4PROST8.

About the Prostate Cancer Education Council

The Prostate Cancer Education Council (PCEC) was founded in 1988 and coordinates the national Prostate Cancer Awareness Week (PCAW) program, September 17 – 23, 2006. PCAW was created by the PCEC as a means to offer free or low-cost prostate cancer screenings across the nation (12 in Colorado, more than 500 nationwide). PCEC and the PCAW event strive to educate men and the women in their lives about the prevalence of prostate cancer, the importance of early detection and the available treatment options. In addition to coordinating PCAW, PCEC conducts the Prostate Awareness and Cancer Education (PACE) Race in major cities across the country and works with a number of NFL teams and player spokesmen in the Tackle Prostate Cancer campaign, dedicating a number of games throughout the season to prostate cancer awareness. As one of the oldest and largest organized screening efforts in the nation, PCAW has helped millions of men receive potentially life-saving screenings in addition to influencing additional research dollars to be earmarked for prostate cancer.
