Collection Agency Gets More Green By Going Paperless With A Document Management System

Collection Agency Gets More Green By Going Paperless With A Document Management System

The agency saves as much as $2,000 a month using the Document Locator document management system so collection agents can answer questions faster, and recover debt quicker.

Portland, OR (PRWEB) January 5, 2010

Pacific Northwest Collections has improved the efficiency of its debt recovery efforts by using the Document Locator document management system (http://www. documentlocator. com/Solutions/Document-Management-System/) to help agents retrieve files and answer debtor questions in a manner of seconds. The system, developed by document management software company ColumbiaSoft, allows collection agents to search the content of debtor files and retrieve documents electronically while payers are on the phone.

"Before using Document Locator, each person in the department spent approximately two hours a day dealing with issues related to paper files - pulling paperwork, typing, copying, re-filing," said Shannon Puaokalani, manager at Pacific Northwest Collections. "That works out to about $2,000 a month in associated costs to the company and its employees that we can now save."

The collection agency uses Document Locator to scan all of its clients’ debtor documents into text-searchable digital files that can be quickly searched and retrieved later by collection agents while actively engaged in the recovery process. Payers can now get answers to questions from agents in real-time while on the phone, without having to wait and hear back from customer service agents later after documents are manually researched and pulled from filing cabinets. The entire process streamlines business, eliminates time wasted on document filing, and improves customer service.

"Filing and retrieval of paperwork is sometimes overlooked as a significant cost factor for business," said ColumbiaSoft executive vice president, David Pogue. "In the case of Pacific Northwest Collections, they not only realized the value of making a key business process more efficient, but now they’re really seeing the reward with about a six-month ROI on their collections document management program."

Case study details end to paper-chase
A recent case study highlights the success Pacific Northwest Collections has had with its document management program in its collection department, and company-wide. After the initial success in the collection department, the company extended document management further to other areas of the business, including legal, sales, and bookkeeping. The complete story can be found online in a document management case study (http://www. documentlocator. com/Products/Case_Studies/) library at: http://www. documentlocator. com/Products/Case_Studies/ (http://www. documentlocator. com/Products/Case_Studies/)

Pacific Northwest Collections has been helping healthcare offices, banks and financial institutions, property landlords, and other businesses recover delinquent debt since it was first opened in 1934. The agency is located in Tacoma, Washington, and serves customers throughout the Pacific Northwest.

'Donor Child' Finds Work at Sperm Bank Rewarding

'Donor Child' Finds Work at Sperm Bank Rewarding

Gretchen Heinrich's parents used a sperm bank almost 30 years ago. Today, she is helping other women find solutions to fighting infertility as an employee with the European Sperm Bank USA. By Chris Gamache

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) December 10, 2010

Gretchen Heinrich is uniquely qualified to work as a biological analyst at the Seattle-based sperm bank, European Sperm Bank USA. Almost 30 years ago, she was conceived with the use of donor sperm. Gretchen finds her current job “perfect for someone who truly understands what it’s like to be a donor-conceived child.”

Gretchen’s story touches on many of the issues faced by couples considering donor insemination. Her parents decided to use donor sperm after discovering they were both carriers of a rare genetic mutation making it impractical to have a child on their own. The year was 1982. There were no donor catalogs, no donor numbers, no special testing and no open donors. The physician who performed the insemination advised Gretchen’s parents that he would do his best to match ethnicity, that the donor was likely a medical student, and that they would never know the donor’s identity.

Even as a child, Gretchen knew something did not “feel” quite right. But her parents never shared their secret about her conception. Instead, Gretchen discovered she was conceived with donor sperm when she was 21. She firmly believes “skeletons that big rarely stay in the closet.” The news did not come as a complete shock to Gretchen, but has caused heartache. “Learning that everything you were told as a child wasn’t exactly truthful is a hard pill to swallow,” reflects Gretchen. While she sympathizes with the struggles her parents endured, she believes “the healthiest relationships are built on honesty and trust.”

Although her parents have helped her fill in the gaps, Gretchen will likely never be able to identify her donor or donor siblings. She doesn’t blame her parents but rather the clinic they used, for not taking into consideration the life it was helping to create. That clinic has long since closed and all records have been destroyed. Gretchen reluctantly accepts this reality. “While many of my questions were answered, the really big ones will probably never be solved. I read somewhere it’s hard to start a book without having read chapter one. I agree. It’s difficult not knowing my chapter one.”

In her position with European Sperm Bank USA, Gretchen recognizes that even though sperm bank practices have changed dramatically since the early 80’s, many of the issues faced by prospective parents remain the same. Gretchen states “it’s a very rewarding feeling to know that I am helping create miracles and helping couples that perhaps struggle the way my parents did in starting a family.”

The fact that European Sperm Bank USA only uses Open ID donors (donors who have agreed to the release of their identity when offspring reach age 18) makes Gretchen’s employment there all the more fitting. The policies of European Sperm Bank USA give her confidence that children conceived with its donor sperm will at least have an opportunity to know their donors when they become adults and to connect with their donor siblings. “Knowing that I’m contributing my time and efforts to future children that will never have to wonder about their own chapter one makes me more passionate about my work.”

NoJailForPot. com Website Launches New Kind of Internet Activism

NoJailForPot. com Website Launches New Kind of Internet Activism

Leaving traditional political activities to such groups as Norml and The Marijuana Policy Project, the newly Re-Launched website www. NoJailForPot. com seeks to build political consensus.

North Hollywood, CA (PRWEB) May 19, 2006

Leaving traditional political activities to such groups as Norml and The Marijuana Policy Project, the newly Re-Launched website www. NoJailForPot. com seeks to build political consensus.

“I accept and declare to the world my support for the idea that no one in the United States of America be in prison for any non-violent activity related to the use, possession, cultivation, transportation or sale of hemp / marijuana.”

So reads the “Declaration” on the front page of the NoJailForPot. com website.

Visitors are invited to “sign” the Declaration by listing their name and city, and then are allowed a space for comments. All names and comments are viewable by the public.

“This is for people who are willing to stand up and be counted when it comes to opposing the use of incarceration to deal with marijuana.” said Jake Bottero, webmaster of NoJailForPot. com since its inception in the year 2000, who reports that nearly 8000 people have already signed, with the number growing daily.

“This is not just a political poll designed to trace public opinion at a particular time on a particular issue. This is designed to be a permanent statement.”

NoJailForPot. com was conceived by Lawrence D. Goldberg, author, businessman and ex-political activist with the Libertarian Party. “I was doing a course through Landmark Education called the Self Expression Leadership Course, which encouraged us to take on a project to help the community. I have always felt that putting people in jail for smoking pot – and anything non-violent relating to it – was morally reprehensible and a total waste of taxpayer dollars.”

“Most of the people I know – including many health freaks, health professionals, and high skills professionals who use no drugs at all – agreed with me that marijuana prohibition - like alcohol prohibition, is counterproductive. So, I decided to create a website where people could post their opinion. When enough people stand up and post their name, politicians will realize that it is politically safe to do the right thing, and the laws will change – just like they recently changed in Mexico of all places.”

NoJailForPot. com is structured around an interesting concept relating to American History. There are slots for fifty-six “Founders” who pay $100 each to help sponsor the workings of the website. The number fifty-six was chosen because it is the same number of people who signed the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America.

“Just like the Founders of our Nation, The people who were willing to put their names and their money forward on the NoJailForPot. com website are pushing in the direction of freedom and human rights. We have not even filled all the Founder’s slots, but we are progressing very nicely considering all of our growth was just word of mouth. We did no formal promotion – until now.”

“Our whole concept is based on the simple idea that when enough people sign the Declaration, the laws will change.”

WTS Announces Completion of its Ninth Consecutive Annual SAS 70 Audit

WTS Announces Completion of its Ninth Consecutive Annual SAS 70 Audit

WTS, Inc., a leader in application hosting for JD Edwards enterprise software, announced its hosted solutions have achieved third party validation under the Statement of Accounting Standards No. 70 (SAS 70). This is the company's ninth consecutive SAS 70 audit.

Seattle, Washington (PRWEB) January 6, 2007

WTS, Inc., a leader in application hosting for JD Edwards enterprise software, announced its hosted solutions have achieved third party validation under the Statement of Accounting Standards No. 70 (SAS 70). This is the company's ninth consecutive SAS 70 audit.

Statement on Auditing Standards No. 70, Service Organizations, is an international auditing standard developed by the American Institute of Certified Public Accounts (AICPA). A SAS 70 report validates a service organization has been through an in-depth audit of their information technology control objectives and processes. These audits demonstrate that a service organization has adequate controls and safeguards in place when they host or process data belonging to their customers.

This audit is recognized by the U. S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as an acceptable method for management at publicly-traded companies to obtain assertions about their service organization's controls without conducting separate audits. Under Sarbanes-Oxley's Section 404, the management of publicly traded companies must take personal responsibility for the effectiveness of internal control over financial reporting, including controls at companies to which they outsource IT operations.

"This auditor's report represents WTS's ninth consecutive year for completing our SAS 70 validation," said Larry McFadden, Chief Security Officer at WTS. "This recurring endorsement, by an independent audit team, provides credible proof to our customers and prospects that their critical business data is secure using our hosted services."

The SAS 70 audit covers many of the company's control objectives including those for organizational management, security, systems availability, performance monitoring, and change management. By auditing the control objectives, the independent auditors report provides reasonable assurance that WTS's controls are suitably designed to achieve the control objectives.

"When our JD Edwards customers entrust their data and business applications to WTS, they expect our hosting services to be exceptional," said Sam Rediess, Vice President of Customer Service at WTS. "WTS is committed to providing operational excellence, world class security, and industry leading uptime and availability to our customers. Our customers know that our security and regulatory compliance commitments for SAS 70 and HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996) meets or exceeds best-practice standards."

The requirements of Section 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) of 2002 make SAS 70 audit reports important to the process of reporting on effective internal controls at service organizations. This act, adopted the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission (COSO) model of controls, which is the same model that SAS 70 audits have utilized since inception. SOX heightened the focus placed on understanding the controls over financial reporting and identified a Type II SAS 70 report as the only acceptable method of obtaining third-party assurance regarding the controls at a service organization.

The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation will hold its 17th annual Fall Golf and Tennis Classic on Monday, September 25th, at the Edgewood Country Club in River Vale, N. J. The presenting sponsor of the event is once again Union State Bank, which continues to demonstrate its commitment to the community through efforts such as this. Proceeds from the event will help to defray the purchase and installation costs of a new state-of-the-art 64-Slice CT Scanner.

Suffern, NY (PRWEB) August 29, 2006

The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation will hold its 17th annual Fall Golf and Tennis Classic on Monday, September 25th, at the Edgewood Country Club in River Vale, N. J. The presenting sponsor of the event is once again Union State Bank, which continues to demonstrate its commitment to the community through efforts such as this. Proceeds from the event will help to defray the purchase and installation costs of a new state-of-the-art 64-Slice CT Scanner.

The golf classic will be a fun-filled day beginning with registration and a breakfast buffet at 9:00 a. m. The golf format is an elite 18-hole “shamble,” with double team best ball scoring. For those who prefer a hard court to the links, a tennis tournament, with a round robin format, will also be offered. The day culminates with an elaborate “Grand Reception” featuring a silent auction and awards program.

Local corporations and organizations are encouraged to show their support by taking advantage of one or more of the various sponsorship opportunities that are available, ranging from $25,000 “Links Sponsor” on down to $250 “Tee Sponsor.” Individual golfers are invited to attend at a cost of $475 per person, while individual tennis slots cost $300. The donation to attend the evening’s Grand Reception alone is $150. Donations of goods and/or services for the always popular silent auction, such as gift certificates, show or game tickets, or electronics, would be much appreciated.

All funds raised through the Fall Classic will support the acquisition and installation of the latest diagnostic imaging equipment, a 64-Slice CT Scanner.

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death among men and women in the United States. With construction of the new Active International Cardiovascular Institute at Good Samaritan Hospital underway for a January opening, the hospital is adding technology now to compliment those services. The only 64-slice CT scanner in Rockland County can successfully capture sharp, highly detailed images of moving organs such as the heart and lungs. This significant improvement allows physicians to capture nearly 200 images each second – in fact, most scans can be completed in as little as 10 seconds! The images give cardiologists an inside look at your heart without any invasive measures to detect even small blockages. Once detected, any blockages can be addressed by a cardiologist on staff at Good Samaritan, preventing the associated risk of a heart attack. Your support of this year’s Fall Classic will help fund this new technology.

For more information on sponsorship opportunities, or to sign up for golf or tennis, please contact the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation at 845-368-5151.

Good Samaritan Hospital is part of the Bon Secours Charity Health System, which also includes St. Anthony Community Hospital in Warwick, NY and Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis, NY. Additionally, Bon Secours Charity Health System provides the services of a Certified Home Health Agency, two long-term care facilities, an assisted living and adult home facility and several other medical programs. Child Anxiety Program Turnaround: Turning Fear Into Freedom Was Featured on WCNC Morning Show, Charlotte Today

Child Anxiety Program Turnaround: Turning Fear Into Freedom Was Featured on WCNC Morning Show, Charlotte Today

Back to school jitters are normal. But as a parent how do you know if it is normal fears or your child needs help. That was the topic on WCNC Charlotte Today with host Colleen Odegaard. Christopher McCarthy with Informed Therapy Resources (ITR) was on the show to talk about what parents can do to help their kids with back-to-school anxiety and how Turnaround: Turning Fear Into Freedom can provide professional, kid-friendly help to those children needing additional resources.

Charlotte, NC (Vocus) August 24, 2010

Christopher McCarthy of Informed Therapy Resources (ITR) was on the WCNC show Charlotte Today with host Colleen Odegaard talking about normal back to school jitters versus school anxiety. How do you know when your child has a more significant anxiety disorder versus normal school jitters? If your child is exhibiting irrational thoughts, uncomfortable feelings and dysfunctional coping behaviors, they are showing signs of an anxiety disorder and may need further help. What can parents do to help their kids overcome their school anxiety? There are four things parents can do to help kids during this time: 1) Help the child gain confidence by touring the school and meeting the teacher, 2) Formulate a plan with the teacher and administrators regarding how the child's separation anxiety will be handled, 3) Teach the child relaxation exercises to help them deal with their uncomfortable feelings and, 4) Have them bring a reassuring reminder from home, like a small stuffed animal or family photo to comfort them during the day.

ITR has development a professional audio program designed for anxious children who struggle with anxiety disorders such as Separation Anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Social Phobia, Panic Attacks, and other childhood fears. Created by Psychologist Dr. David Russ and Licensed Professional Counselor Christopher McCarthy, this program is a major innovation in the treatment of child anxiety. No other treatment solution available today combines the professional, creative, and child friendly designed features found in Turnaround. Visit myanxiouschild. com for further information.

Turnaround is based upon cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which has shown conclusive results in the treatment of children with anxiety and depression. The program invites the listening child to join 6 other anxious children on an imagined 10 day hiking trip with two “Docs” Chris and David, and a mentor teen named Emily. Emily acts as the narrator and guide, while the "Docs" lead the children though each day’s adventurous lesson. Along the journey, the children meet imaginary characters that make learning the anxiety reducing techniques easy and fun. The talents of 14 child actors and 6 adult actors were utilized to make Turnaround an audio adventure they'll want to listen to again and again. That's the beauty of Turnaround; the kids are learning scientifically researched anxiety busting techniques in way that feels fun, friendly, and emotionally engaging.

The Turnaround Audio Program includes:
Turnaround Program for kids (10 CDs)
Turnaround Journal, a 74 page workbook for kids
Chill Kit, relaxation guide for kids (1 CD)
Parent Guide, packed full of helpful information and techniques to help parents (2 CDs)

A BONUS CD titled Med FAQs in also included. Med FAQs is an interview with nationally recognized Neuropsychiatrist, Dr. James Lee, offering a comprehensive discussion on the medications used to treat child anxiety is also included.

Facial Exercise: The Solution For A Younger Looking Face

Facial Exercise: The Solution For A Younger Looking Face

Cynthia Rowland, facial fitness expert and successful aging coach, announces a re-release of her special report: "Facial Exercise: The Evidence Does Not Lie". "The perils of cutting healthy tissue and injecting toxins and serums into the face may not always produce a youthful face. Celebrities have shown their 'done' and 'over done' faces and John Q. Public is not paying attention. Celebrities can afford the best care but even they are not getting the best results; unfortunately people blindly continue to search for the Fountain of Youth using new, untested procedures that can produce devastating consequences. This type of self improvement is actually self mutilation."

Long Beach, CA (PRWEB) August 28, 2008

Cynthia Rowland, facial fitness expert and successful aging coach announces the re-release of her special report because she believes that when it was first released, the public was not ready to hear this important news. Please read the report at http://www. rejenuve. com/pdf/Facial. Exercise. Evidence. does. not. lie. pdf (http://www. rejenuve. com/pdf/Facial. Exercise. Evidence. does. not. lie. pdf)

A year and a half after its release many plastic surgery horrors have been revealed and Cynthia Rowland feels people are ready to embrace a healthier and safer way to look younger without risk.

Since then a growing number of doctors have been voicing their concerns regarding facial plastic surgery. An article from Daily Mail, "The Nip - Tuck Stitch Up" (8/11/08) showcases several physicians from all parts of the world as they disclose that a growing number of aesthetic surgeons, cosmetic doctors and dermatologists are questioning the efficacy of anti-aging procedures and whether these procedures are indeed speeding up the aging process.

Dr. Michael Prager, a member of the British Association of Cosmetic Doctors, stated in the article that he believes 'anti-aging cosmetic surgery actually accelerates the aging process, citing also that four out of five clients regret their decision to have surgical procedures'. Dr. Prager says that the truth is that you cannot improve the state of healthy skin by cutting it.

Dr. George Roman who practices in both Paris and London believes that in the next ten years there will be a far less demand for aggressive anti-aging procedures.

This suits Cynthia Rowland, creator of Facial Magic, a facial exercise system, just fine. The Facial Magic System works to lift and tighten sagging faces. "I believe facial exercise is nature's facelift; if you want a younger looking face that has definition and contour, here is a solution that is risk free. Exercise does not harm the face, there is no recovery time and the results are always pleasing to the user because they rediscover the youthful face they thought was lost forever. Every aging face benefits from exercise."

Here are a few comments from men and women who have chosen exercise over injections and surgery. They have taken charge of their faces and learned how to maintain a youthful look:"

"It truly is the answer to surgery." Phillip, Los Angeles

"Your program is more effective than simple oral motor exercises…" Diane Evans-Blake, MACCC/SLP

"My appearance has greatly improved..." Nicole

Cynthia Rowland, a lively guest, has national radio and TV experience. Ms. Rowland has appeared on The View, NBC 4, Fit TV, HGTV and other popular shows. This author, speaker and television personality is leading the crusade to keep men and women looking vibrantly younger through natural techniques.

Promotion of Male Circumcision at IAS 2009 Conference Is a Mistake, Says NOCIRC of South Africa

Promotion of Male Circumcision at IAS 2009 Conference Is a Mistake, Says NOCIRC of South Africa

AIDS Policy Makers Wearing Blinders to the Costs and Harms of Male Circumcision.

Cape Town, South Africa (PRWEB) July 11, 2009

The human rights group NOCIRC of South Africa (NOCIRC-SA), represented at the IAS 2009 conference this week, is urging AIDS policy makers to halt male circumcision rollout, calling the plan exorbitant, dangerous and unethical.

’The promotion of male circumcision sends the wrong message, creates a false sense of protection, and places women at greater risk for HIV. Men are already lining up to be circumcised in the belief that they no longer need condoms. Women and children may be the most harmed by the promotion of male circumcision,’ said Shelton Kaye, Co-Director of NOCIRC-SA.

New studies released since three highly-publicised randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on HIV and circumcision show that RCT results cannot be applied to the general population of sub-Saharan Africa or any other region. A 2008 study concluded that male circumcision is not associated with reduced HIV infection rates in the general sub-Saharan population. Another recent study analysed circumcision rates and HIV incidence in South Africa, finding that: ’Circumcision had no protective effect on HIV transmission.’

‘The RCTs conclusions are questionable. The only supported conclusion that can be drawn from the RCTs is that circumcision might delay HIV infection. Even if the RCTs’ claims were valid,’ Kaye said, ’a 2008 study found that increased use of condom promotion would be 95 times more cost-effective than male circumcision in preventing new HIV infections.’

’Especially troubling is the extraordinarily high rate of complications from male circumcision in Africa,’ Kaye added. ‘A 2008 WHO bulletin reported an alarming 35% complication rate for traditional circumcisions and an 18% complication rate for clinical circumcisions, Africa's overburdened health care system cannot handle the tens of thousands of circumcision complications that would result from mass circumcision campaigns.’
Studies have shown removal of the foreskin results in a less sensitive penis. A less sensitive penis, coupled with the reduced sensitivity afforded by condoms, encourages males to forgo condoms.

‘It is unethical for circumcisions to be carried out on adult males unless fully informed consent has been obtained,’ Kaye said. ‘The number of reports of African males agreeing to circumcision, so that they no longer need to use condoms, reveals they are consenting to the surgery without fully informed consent.’

Of particular ethical concern is the recent increase in advocacy for neonatal circumcision to prevent HIV. Neonatal circumcision destroys erogenous tissue and places newborns at immediate risk of infection, haemorrhage, penile damage, and in rare cases, even death. ‘When one considers the goal to potentially reduce, if at all, risk of acquiring AIDS 15-20 years later,’ Kaye said, ‘neonatal circumcision looks especially farfetched in comparison to other preventive measures.’

Kaye concludes: ’The promotion of male circumcision for HIV prevention is fraught with very serious logistical, monetary and ethical concerns. Proponents of circumcision have yet to suggest a long-term monitoring system to evaluate failure or success of the exaggerated claims based on three RCTs which contradict real-world population samples. While the world is desperate for a “silver bullet” to end the HIV epidemic, it should be obvious that male circumcision is not the answer that we have been waiting for.’

Childhood Obesity Interventions Must Begin Early, UCSF Experts Say

Childhood Obesity Interventions Must Begin Early, UCSF Experts Say

To be a truly comprehensive and successful anti-obesity program, First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign must include interventions that target pregnant women, infants, and pre-school-age children, UCSF experts say.

San Francisco, CA (Vocus) April 15, 2010

To be a truly comprehensive and successful anti-obesity program, First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign must include interventions that target pregnant women, infants, and pre-school-age children, UCSF experts say.

Janet Wojcicki, PhD, MPH, UCSF assistant professor of pediatrics, and Melvin Heyman, MD, MPH, professor of pediatrics and chief of pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at UCSF Children’s Hospital, discuss how “Let’s Move” might have the greatest impact on reversing the childhood obesity epidemic in the New England Journal of Medicine. Their perspective piece is available online at http://content. nejm. org/ (http://content. nejm. org/) and will appear in the April 21, 2010, issue of the journal.

When the First Lady introduced “Let’s Move” in February 2010, she outlined the campaign’s central anti-obesity strategies. These include revamping the nutritional labeling of products by the U. S. Department of Agriculture, improving the nutritional standards of school lunches, increasing opportunities for children to engage in physical activity, and improving access to high-quality foods throughout the country.

According to Wojcicki and Heyman, these intervention strategies do have the potential to alter the course of the childhood obesity epidemic to some extent. However, because “Let’s Move” focuses primarily on school-age children – many of whom already are overweight or obese – the program in its current form does not constitute a truly comprehensive obesity intervention plan.

“These types of behavioral and nutrition interventions in schools or within the home have only limited success in preventing weight gain in children,” the authors say.

“Obesity prevention must start as early as possible, since school-age children already have an unacceptably high prevalence of obesity and associated medical conditions.”

The authors cite the 2007-2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which found that nearly one-third of American children two years and older are overweight or obese, and even higher proportions among low-income children and ethnic minorities.

With those numbers in mind, Wojcicki and Heyman assert that in order to have the greatest impact, “Let’s Move” must include prevention efforts that directly target pregnant women, infants and pre-school-age children.

“Including prevention efforts for these groups will have the longest-term effect on the obesity epidemic in the United States,” they say.

For example, Wojcicki and Heyman recommend that “Let’s Move” incorporate interventions that aim to reduce weight gain and cigarette smoking in mothers-to-be. Studies have shown that excessive weight gain and smoking during pregnancy each are associated with an increased risk for obesity later in life.

The authors also advocate for interventions designed to increase the amount of time infants are breastfed and the amount of sleep babies get, as shorter-than-recommended durations of breastfeeding and suboptimal amounts of sleep also put a child at greater risk for becoming obese. According to Wojcicki and Heyman, these types of interventions are crucial to include in a comprehensive obesity prevention effort, because they affect a child’s lifetime risk of obesity.

“By directly emphasizing the potential risks for lifetime obesity that present in infancy and early childhood and providing the structure and direction for interventions in these areas, the campaign could increase its overall impact on reversing the childhood obesity epidemic,” they conclude.

Wojcicki currently is investigating pre - and post-natal factors that might shape future dietary habits and the development of obesity in a group of Latino families. The children are entering their third year of life, and already Wojcicki and her team of researchers at UCSF have found patterns of eating behavior that may lead to future weight problems. Wojcicki’s research is supported by funding in part from the NIH and from philanthropic support.

UCSF Children’s Hospital creates an environment where children and their families find compassionate care at the forefront of scientific discovery, with more than 150 experts in 50 medical specialties serving patients throughout Northern California and beyond. DEVELOPMENT HISTORY

Normal metabolism releases destructive oxygen molecules called free radicals into the body. On a daily basis we are all exposed to additional destructive free radicals from pollution, smoke, alcohol, contaminated water, sunlight, stress and tension.

It is now commonly known from research, that free radicals are largely responsible for our aging process by being implicated in cardiovascular diseases, memory loss, vision loss, arthritis, certain cancers and sports injuries. Free radicals can be described as the cause of "biological rusting". 80% of skin aging is due to the effect of free radicals. They kill off our cells, and therefore cause premature aging. (It is free radicals that make our fruit go brown).

Everyone therefore needs to combat free radicals, by the use of Anti-oxidants, which reduce oxidative damage. Research has proven that Grape-seed extract is the best antioxidant available. Studies have proven that it is a more powerful reducer of free radical induced cell damage than vitamin C, E, and B-carotene. Some of the biological active flavonoids found in red grape seeds, posses up to 20 to 50 times more antioxidant activity than vitamins C and E respectively.

It’s the highlight of my day to read the unique nominations and see all the great photos that come through. I have no idea how the panel is ever going to choose just one child!”

With the April 30th deadline fast approaching, FLAVORx will soon reveal the celebrity judging panel it has enlisted to help determine the winner. In one aspect, the panel will be similar to "American Idol" by touting the supportiveness of Paula Abdul. Rest assured however, that the panel will steer clear from the candor of Simon Cowell. Though the details have yet to be released, clues indicate that the panel will be comprised of judges from diverse backgrounds, and will include professional athletes from the NFL, NASCAR, Major League Baseball and Major League Soccer, representatives from Children’s Hospitals and charities such as the Make-A-Wish Foundation, representatives from "The Miss Teen America Pageant" and Donald Trump's "Miss USA Pageant", and government leaders.

Time still remains to enter the contest. The winner will be featured on nationwide FLAVORx marketing materials for one year and receive a $1,000 college scholarship and roundtrip flight to Washington, DC. Additionally, the person who nominates the winner will receive a $500 cash prize. To nominate today, please visit www. flavorx. com/human/superkid. asp (http://www. flavorx. com/human/superkid. asp). Meta Continues Patient Safety Education with Health Data Management Webinar

Meta Healthcare IT Solutions, a supplier of comprehensive medication safety information systems for the healthcare industry, is continuing to showcase its patient safety solutions, most recently through a focus on its MetaCare eMar™ solution in a Webinar by Health Data Management.

Floral Park, NY (PRWEB) September 16, 2009

Meta Healthcare IT Solutions, a supplier of comprehensive medication safety information systems for the healthcare industry, is continuing to showcase its patient safety solutions, most recently through a focus on its MetaCare eMar™ solution in a Webinar by Health Data Management.

Titled "From the Pharmacy to the Bedside: Preventing Medication Errors with Barcode Technology," the Webinar highlighted the success of Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC), a hospital located in Portsmouth, Ohio which has achieved 98.6 percent bar code compliance using MetaCare eMAR. The Webinar, which was sponsored by First DataBank, also examined how to use First DataBank's clinical content to improve patient safety.

"First Databank clinical knowledge is not simply applied equally by all subscribers to their data," explained Sal Barcia, CEO of Meta. "It is more like an artist's palette, where the skill and creativity of the artist will yield very different results for each user based on their talent and vision. We are pleased to have developed a close relationship with First Databank over the past twenty years whereby they are truly a partner in patient care who listen and respond to our needs."

According to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), medication errors cause at least one death every day and injure approximately 1.3 million people annually in the U. S. In addition, a report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) noted that these errors, or preventable adverse drug events (ADEs), cost the country's healthcare system a staggering $2 billion annually.

"SOMC is a great example of how bar coding technology can significantly reduce medication administration errors and therefore improve patient safety outcomes," remarked Lisa Geller, Product Manager for First DataBank. "At First DataBank, we work to drive patient safety and healthcare quality by providing drug databases that are used within information systems that touch every aspect of healthcare."

MetaCare eMAR is a Web-based Medication Administration System designed to monitor and reduce medication errors at the point of care through the use of barcode technology. Upon scanning the patient's wristband barcode, MetaCare eMAR identifies and verifies the patient, searches for the medications that have been ordered for that patient and cross-checks for possible drug allergies and interactions. Subsequent scanning of the actual medication packaging verifies the correct drug, dose, route of administration and schedule. Through efficiently automating the medication administration process, the system allows hospital pharmacies to more efficiently track medication inventory while providing "five rights checking."

About Meta
For nearly 20 years, Meta has been developing software solutions that meet the needs and exceed the expectations of the healthcare industry by providing innovative and comprehensive clinical information solutions to hospitals and other healthcare enterprises. Arsenic Research Related India Arsenic Health Research Programme conduted by IPGMER Calcutta, India

Research Programme on Arsenic related health effect is being carried out by Dr. D N Guha Mazumder and his team at Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research India Calcutta.

(PRWEB) December 5, 2003

Research Programme on Arsenic related health effect is being carried out by Dr. D N Guha Mazumder, Professor and Head (Retd.), Dept. of Medicine and Gastroenterology and his team at Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research, Kolkata, Kolkata, India, since 1984. Other research publications of Dr. Guha Mazumder is maintained by DNGM Research Foundation.

Health effect due to chronic drinking of arsenic contaminated ground water was studied on people exposed to 'As' in villages and on patients attending SSKM Hospital, Kolkata, Westbengal, since 1984. Detailed clinical study and investigation carried out on more than 250 cases, revealed that chronic 'As' toxicity produces various non cancer manifestations e. g. chronic lung disease, chronic liver disease, etc. over and above skin manifestations neuropathy and vascular manifestation which were described by other investigators earlier. Epidemiological study carried out on more than 7000 people in one of the affected districts showed that prevalence of skin manifestation was strongly related to water 'As' level.

Efficiency of chelating agents like DMSA and DMPS were also studied on the 'As' exposed people in a double blind placebo controller manner. Natural history of chronic arsenicosis following intake of safe water were also investigated. To understand the biochemical mechanism of lever fibrosis experimental studies were carried out by feeding animals with 'As' contaminated water. Collaborative research with Prof. Allan H. Smith of University of California, Berkeley, USA were are being carried out in nested case control studies on previously studied population and these include low dose exposure and susceptibility factors for skin effect, high dose exposure and respiratory effect and Arsenic exposure and pregnancy out-comes and child development. A list of scientific publications and summaries of the Arsenic study results are provided.

These posters will detail impressive clinical evidence of this patented gel’s ability to help heal even the most severe and chronic wounds.

The largest event on wound healing in the country, the Annual Symposium on Advanced Wound Care and Wound Healing Society will be held at Gaylord Palms Hotel and Convention Center in Orlando, Florida, from April 17-20, 2010. Nearly a thousand posters were submitted to the symposium from renowned healing technology companies around the country, and just over three hundred were accepted by the Wound Healing Society; a series of seven posters from Wake Pharma US were accepted for display, illustrating the healing properties that their product Wound-Be-Gone® has when used on skin wounds.

These impressively well designed and technically detailed posters illustrate the profound positive impact that Wound-Be-Gone can have on even the most difficult to heal skin injuries. Says Wake Pharma US Medical Director Jeffrey Niezgoda, MD, “This extensive series of poster presentation of Wound-Be-Gone® clearly demonstrates the clinical, economic and patient benefits that can be derived from using Wound-Be-Gone®. This clinical data shows benefits in the treatment of a wide variety of wound types. As we continue to accumulate additional clinical data the evidence of accelerated healing and reduction in pain and improved patient benefits is becoming extremely compelling giving us a very favorable product profile.”

This series of seven posters covers multiple topics of great importance in the wound healing community, as follows:

Poster 1: The Wound Healing Cascade: How Oxygen Free Radicals Negatively Impact the Inflammatory Phase highlights. This poster illustrates how the advanced technology in Wound-Be-Gone® prevents bacterial growth which occurs during inflammation. It also demonstrates how the free oxygen radical binding technology in Wound-Be-Gone binds with radicals that are created during the healing process, helping to decrease swelling, speed healing, and promote healthy new tissue growth with little to no scarring.

Poster 2: Advantages of using a hydrophilic polymer gel with oxygen free radicals on Split Thickness Skin Grafts. This presentation focuses specifically on split thickness skin grafts (STSG) and how the patented formula of Wound-Be-Gone® uses its oxygen free radical binding technology to enhance healing, making treatments of such STSG faster and cost effective.

Poster 5: At Home Or In A Hospital: A Simple, Yet Effective OTC Wound Gel That Makes A Wound "Be Gone.” Showcasing successful treatment in five patients within a clinical setting, this educational poster illustrates how Wound-Be-Gone® helps doctors to overcome issues of cost and effectiveness in treatments of all wounds, both acute and chronic.

Poster 6: Healing by Binding Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). Presenting an experimental study, this poster details the results of wound healing where half of the subjects were given a simple water based gel and the others were treated with the patented formulation in Wound-Be-Gone®. This poster shows the noticeable improvement in healing experienced by study participants who were treated with Wound-Be-Gone.

Poster 7: Enhanced Cosmetic Results In African American Skin Pigmentation Using A Polymer Hydrogel With Oxygen Free Radical Binding Technology. Showing how Wound-Be-Gone does more than simply accelerate healing, this amazing poster showcases the incredible ability that Wound-Be-Gone’s free oxygen radical binding technology has when it comes to treating skin wounds in African Americans. In such dark skinned populations this novel healing gel helps wounds heal quickly, with little scarring and noticeably less de-pigmentation than is common with other wound healing regimes.

Developed by medical doctors and clinicians, and tested in extensive clinical trials, Wound-Be-Gone® has been proven an incredibly effective healing gel, as illustrated in these artistic and educational posters. Louder Than Words Trade Association Leads By Example

Louder Than Words Trade Association Leads By Example

Elysian Dream has joined fellow members of Botanical Elements™ Trade Association (BETA) to promote their products and their environmentally-conscious philosophy.

Marysville, WA (PRWEB) October 22, 2004

Trisha Kernan has always subscribed to the belief that actions speak louder than words – and that these actions can inspire others to follow in her earth-friendly example. In illustration of this concept, Trisha N Kernan of Elysian Dream has joined fellow members of Botanical Elements™ Trade Association (BETA) to promote their products and their environmentally-conscious philosophy.

Botanical Elements was founded in April of 2002, in order to promote and market businesses which produce products created using botanical elements -- such as herbs, dried flowers, and pure essential oils. "We recognize the implications to our bodies, home and planet when they are exposed to chemicals and products that pollute our air and water,“ explained Kernan. “BETA is comprised of companies that manufacture or sell products such as "true" aromatherapy, natural candles, herbal body care, handmade soap, and products using botanical ingredients. Many Members also offer supplies, raw materials, or services related to the natural products industry," she added.

In addition to their market segment, the members share a common goal – to work together to educate consumers as to their alternatives to using synthetic ingredients -- such as using pure essential oils instead of synthetic fragrance oils. As a group, Botanical Elements promotes the ecological and health benefits of using non-synthetic ingredients. Their national ads can be seen in a variety of publications, including The Herb Quarterly. BETA’s current project, aptly titled “Answering The Call”, has partnered them with Collective Good -- a company that generates funds for charities through cell phone recycling. Mobile phones contain hazardous materials such as mercury, cadmium, nickel and gallium arsenide, and can contaminate ground water if discarded in landfills. Donated phones are kept out of landfills, are either refurbished, or scrapped for parts. All portable phones, pagers, and PDA’s will be accepted.

BETAÂ’s efforts will support The Sierra Club, America's oldest, largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization. BETA member businesses have set a goal to collect 1000 devices by the end of the year. All donations are tax deductible.
