Pacific Scientific HTL Goes e-Kanban with Datacraft Solutions

Pacific Scientific HTL Goes e-Kanban with Datacraft Solutions

Datacraft Solutions helps Pacific Scientific HTL go e-Kanban

Durham, NC (PRWEB) October 8, 2005

Clearly PS/HTL needed a way out of the paper fax morass and into some kind of controlled, electronic kanban system. As PS/HTL’s Purchasing Manager Cari Gintz says, “What led us to decide to go electronic kanban, was sheer frustration and the need to start managing instead of reacting.”

After a year and a half of using the paper fax release system, it was clear that it simply didn’t scale for PS/HTL’s 100-plus suppliers, more than 100 fax numbers over 3500 parts on kanban, and 2000 signals sent each month. With numerous points of possible failure—did a fax get sent? Was it received? Was it legible? Was it acted on?—the system encouraged inefficient behavior all around.

A key component of Pacific Scientific HTL, an internationally renowned maker of aerospace safety equipment and military defense hardware, lean journey was to institute a kanban system that would govern the flow of materials from their suppliers and through their facility. While visual cues governed their internal production kanban system, fax releases signaled their suppliers.

A 20-minute webcast demonstration of Datacraft Solutions’ e-kanban product had alerted Gintz to a system that aligned perfectly with what PS/HTL needed: a system that was easy to learn and use for buyers, planners, and suppliers, and visible enough that everyone involved could do their jobs without constant confusion and supply worries cutting into productivity.

Datacraft Solutions and Gintz approached their work together as a project with measurable goals and a clear, phased implementation strategy. These were some of the specific goals PS/HTL targeted:

-Be assured of getting what’s ordered, and only what’s ordered, at the expected date

-Handle the unpredictable—spikes in demand and other exceptions—predictably

-Get a clear picture of the health of every cell and kanban at any time

-Automatically calculate expected-on-dock delivery dates based on replenishment lead times

-Rapidly bring suppliers on board and provide them visibility of the kanbans they support

-Shorten replenishment times based on true schedules rather than one-size-fits-all guesswork

-Evaluate and motivate supplier performance based on accurate tracking of delivery times and quantities

International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS) Announces Physician Training Program

International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS) Announces Physician Training Program

International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS), in partnership with Turn the Corner Foundation (TTC), launch a new physicians training program intended to decrease the incidence of chronic Lyme disease. Lyme is a complex disease without accurate diagnostic testing solutions. Advanced clinical expertise is often required by physicians to ensure patients receive effective diagnosis and treatment programs. This program is intended to increase patients' access to care for Lyme treatment by increasing the number of physicians trained to treat both early and late-stage cases of Lyme disease.

Bethesda, MD (PRWEB) September 30, 2008

The International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS) today officially launched a physicians training program with the goal of decreasing incidence of chronic Lyme disease. The training program intends to train more than one hundred physicians over the next five years. The program has been underwritten by a grant from New-York-based Turn the Corner Foundation Turn the Corner, an organization dedicated to the support of research, education, awareness and innovative treatments for Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases.

"With more than an estimated 200,000 of cases annually, Lyme disease has become the leading epidemic of our time," said Dr. Daniel Cameron, ILADS board president and internal medicine physician. "We need more physician-scientists who will be the future leaders in the treatment of Lyme and associated diseases."

Increasing the number of physicians educated on the diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease is a key goal in the fight against chronic Lyme disease because advanced cases of Lyme are often the result of misdiagnosis or under treatment soon after a tick bite. Recently discredited treatment guidelines authored by the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA) reflect a narrow view of Lyme disease, making it difficult for physicians not well versed on the complexities of the disease to recognize symptoms and provide adequate treatment. There are no accurate diagnostic medical tests for Lyme disease.

The ILADS/TTC Physician Training Program represents the second phase of ILADS campaign to prevent chronic Lyme disease. The campaign, launched this summer with the release of a guide for consumers and health professionals ILADS Top 10 Tips for Preventing Chronic Lyme Disease (http://www. ilads. org/files/2008/Preventing_CLD_Top_Ten_Tips. pdf), intends to raise awareness of the risks associated with the disease, provide prevention guidance to consumers and training for medical personnel.

Evidence-based Medical Training:
ILADS Physicians Training Program is designed to enhance clinical expertise for physicians with established medical practices. Curriculum is based on ILADS' evidence-based treatment guidelines and focuses on the importance of hands-on experience complemented by thorough review of quality, peer-reviewed literature. During the one-two week program, participants partner with a designated ILADS Lyme literate physician and participate in the diagnosis and care of a variety of challenging early and chronic cases.

A pilot version of the program was launched in 2004. To-date, approximately 100 physicians representing a variety of geographies in the United States have successfully completed the program.

"Effective treatment of Lyme disease requires a comprehensive approach to patient health care," said Maureen McShane M. D, a family practitioner in Chazy, New York. "ILADS' physician training program was invaluable for teaching me how to better assess, diagnose and treat Lyme disease and possible co-infections."

Applications for the training program can be obtained via email lymedocs @ aol. com.

Large Crowd Expected at 2008 Conference:
ILADS 2008 ninth annual conference is scheduled for October 18 and 19, 2008 at the Cathedral Hill Hotel in San Francisco. Several hundred medical professionals representing a myriad of specialty areas are expected to attend. Entomologist Willy Burgdorfer (http://www. lyme. org/ldf/burgdorfer. html), who is credited with discovering the bacteria pathogen that causes Lyme disease, will be keynoting the conference.

The conference is intended to foster dialogue and collaboration among researchers and medical professionals who work with Lyme disease patients in various settings. The program will focus on providing updates in clinical understanding and treatment techniques. Attendees eligible for continued medical education (CME) credit can earn 9.5 credits.

ILADS conference program (http://www. ilads. org/files/2008_meeting/Program. pdf) and continued medical education credit information is available on the ILADS website.

About ILADS:
ILADS www. ilads. org is a nonprofit, international, multidisciplinary medical society, dedicated to the diagnosis and appropriate treatment of Lyme and its associated diseases. ILADS promotes understanding of tick-borne diseases through research and education and strongly supports physicians and other health care professionals dedicated to advancing the standard of care for Lyme and its associated diseases.

About Turn the Corner Foundation:
Turn the Corner Foundation www. turnthecorner. org is a not-for-profit public charity founded in 2002 by Staci and Rich Grodin, with headquarters in New York City. New Study Finds Heavy Human Impacts on World's Oceans

New Study Finds Heavy Human Impacts on World's Oceans

First-ever global study of human influences on marine areas finds significant effects; few "wild waters" still exist.

Arlington, VA (Vocus) February 14, 2008

Damage to oceans is ubiquitous and threatens the long-term health of marine areas, according to a new study (http://www. nature. org/marinethreats) co-authored by Nature Conservancy marine scientist Mark Spalding.

The report, being published in Science tomorrow and posted online today, is accompanied by the first-ever global map revealing how and where mankind has impacted ocean ecosystems.

"We have always relied on oceans for aesthetic beauty, seafood, and global commerce, but we need to rethink our relationship with the sea," said Stephanie Meeks, acting president and CEO of The Nature Conservancy (http://www. nature. org/). "These findings show we must protect and restore our oceans to ensure sustainability for future generations. If we don't act quickly, we risk severe consequences to coastal economies and the local communities that depend on fish as their primary food source."

Led by researchers at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis at the University of Santa Barbara, the University of Hawaii and Stanford University, a total of 19 scientists from academia, nonprofit organizations and government institutions examined how impacts such as overfishing, climate change pollution and invasive species are affecting different ecosystems - from coral reefs and mangrove forests to continental shelves and the deep ocean.

Specific findings outlined in the report include:
The worst affected oceans are adjacent to densely populated coastlines, such as the northern Atlantic -- both on the U. S. seaboard and around northern Europe -- and the western Pacific (Japan, Korea, China and into Southeast Asia). Unsustainable levels of fishing are one of the greatest threats to oceans all over the world. Climate change presents a many-faceted threat, including warming waters, increasing acidification of the ocean and coral bleaching. The problems posed by climate change bring human threats to even the most pristine of ocean waters. Coastal waters - shallow and often close to manmade infrastructure - are some of the most threatened marine habitats, due to pollution, invasive species, and coastal development (buildings, harbors, oil and gas platforms) combined with sever over-fishing.

By examining multiple and complex threats as well as the vulnerabilities of sensitive ecosystems, this study presents the most comprehensive ocean health analysis to date. The combination and accumulation of threats is the most alarming factor causing declines in the majority of the world's oceans. In the Caribbean, for example, coral reef ecosystems have suffered chronic overfishing, nutrient pollution and coral bleaching caused by warming waters. These varied impacts have frequently caused complete ecosystem collapse and resulted in reduced storm protection from loss of natural disaster barriers, reduced incomes from tourism, and depleted fish catches that impact the global economy.

"The challenges for ocean conservation are at an all-time high. But if we keep a sensible perspective and take proactive steps to start properly managing our oceans, and our adjacent lands, the situation is not hopeless and we can reverse these impacts," commented Mark Spalding, senior marine scientist and co-author of the report. "There are still areas that have not been impacted by humans -- we need to prioritize urgent and large-scale conservation efforts that could protect these areas."

The Nature Conservancy's global marine program (http://www. nature. org/initiatives/marine/) is working to influence ocean regulations that ensure fisheries are fairly and sustainably managed, minimize pollution and runoff from coastal development, and to implement shipping and aquaculture controls that would prevent damage from aquatic invasive species.

Pinpointe on-demand email marketing serves 'mid-market' B2B companies sending between 25k and 500k personalized targeted messages/month. With Pinpointe's behavioral targeting and personalization, marketers target prospects based on their actual activities and responses. Integration with Google Analytics allows customers to target campaigns based on number of visits to the website, pages viewed and the amount of time spent on the site. Behavioral targeting based on actual activities has been shown to improve email campaign response rates significantly.

In contrast, entry level self-serve email products from companies like Constant Contact (CTCT) and Responsys are designed for SMB customers with smaller lists and less sophisticated segmentation and targeting requirements. Pinpointe's on-demand email marketing provides sophisticated behavioral targeting and email automation at a price that is a fraction of the total cost of Eloqua and other marketing automation solutions.

Pinpointe's platform completely automates the email marketing process, tracks results of online campaigns, automatically manages unsubscribes and bounced email addresses. Pinpointe complements this with a range of email services to ensure customers are getting the best responses from their email campaigns.

EMarketer projects that even in a down economy, online advertising and email marketing will benefit from a 17.4% growth rate this year and is expected to improve to 23.5% growth in 2012. (Source: eMarketer, August 2008)

According to MarketingSherpa, businesses are increasingly turning to email marketing as the economy continues to slow. MarketingSherpa's 2009 Email Marketing Benchmark Guide has revealed that a growing number of marketers are looking to email list rental as part of their promotional campaigns, with 29 per cent planning to increase spending on this compared with the 23 per cent intending to cut back. The report speculated that this may be due to marketers wanting a predictable source of potential customers amid the downturn.

Pure Prescriptions, Inc. Introduces Curcumin C3 Complex® Nature's Protectant® Infused with Green Tea Extract

Pure Prescriptions, the California based manufacturer and distributor of all-natural supplements, introduces a curcumin supplement joined with the antioxidants in green tea extract. The combination has exhibited numerous health benefits in confirmed clinical studies.

Encinitas, CA (PRWEB) September 14, 2005

Pure Prescriptions®, innovative online retailer and manufacturer of professionally branded health supplements, announce the release of Curcumin C3 Complex®, a supplemental formula designed to provide a wide range of health benefits including nutritional support for those with cancer.

Curcumin C3 Complex® is a unique, patented extract of "curcuma longa root," commonly known as "Turmeric." Turmeric has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries, and is a common household remedy in India. The active constituent is known as curcumin. The Pure Prescriptions brand stands apart by using 500 mg of patented Curcumin C3 Complex®, standardized to contain high concentrations of the herb's active ingredients (curcuminoids) with "Nature's Thermonutrient," Bioperine, to guarantee optimum absorption. In addition, Pure Prescriptions infuse their product with one of nature's most popular and powerful antioxidants, green tea, which has proven to provide a dramatic increase in anti-tumor properties when combined with the curcumin.

"Clinical research studies that have been independently confirmed make Curcumin C3 Complex® the right choice for my patients," says Dr. Chad Larson, Director of the Optimal Wellness Center in Encinitas, CA. "Curcumin C3 Complex® has proven to be unique in its ability to act not only as a powerful antioxidant but to exhibit exemplary anti-inflammatory actions. I recommend Curcumin C3 Complex® in my office for many of my patients."

In recent years the scientific community have unraveled many of the medical benefits of curcumin. Perhaps its most significant is its ability to fight cancer in a myriad of ways. It has the power to block harmful estrogen mimicking toxins from reaching sensitive cells, block "growth" signals to cancerous cells and often cause damaged cells to self-destruct long before the cancer is detectable.

Modern research has identified curcumin to exert a wide range of health benefits which can be useful in combating a number of maladies. These benefits include:

The promotion of increased wound healing The introduction of powerful antioxidant properties which act to scavenge free radicals Increased anti-inflammatory actions Enhanced important detoxification enzymes Enhanced heart and circulatory health

In developing their brand, Pure Prescriptions realized that by adding green tea they could boost benefits and create a true powerhouse of antioxidant protection.

Founded in California by Dr. Devin Ryerson in 2001, Pure Prescriptions is committed to providing sound advice, practical health knowledge and premier health products. Curcumin C3 Complex® is the third health supplement released by the company in 2005. They are scheduled to release three more before the year's end. Quantum Artificial Intelligence Tutoring Software for Accounting Proven to Increase Test Scores and Maximize Effectiveness of Student Study Time

Quantum Artificial Intelligence Tutoring Software for Accounting Proven to Increase Test Scores and Maximize Effectiveness of Student Study Time

Research studies indicate that Quantum's tutoring software is more effective in improving student test performance and accelerating learning when compared to students who only used a textbook or online homework system for study.

Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) September 3, 2008

Quantum Simulations, Inc., a developer of artificial intelligence (AI) tutoring, assessment and professional development software announced the results of two research studies conducted at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, OH and the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, SK to evaluate the pedagogical effectiveness of the Quantum Tutors for the Accounting Cycle.

At Baldwin-Wallace College, students using the Quantum Tutor for transaction analysis achieved 3.5 times more gain in test scores over students who studied with the textbook. In addition, 86.6 percent of the Tutors' responses were rated as "Very Helpful" or "Helpful" which is equivalent to students rating an instructor on every explanation or answer given during a lecture. The full paper can be downloaded at http://ssrn. com/abstract=1151791 (http://ssrn. com/abstract=1151791).

In a separate study conducted at the University of Saskatchewan, empirical findings indicated that after one group of students completed a homework assignment for the topic of transaction analysis using the Quantum Tutor, their test scores improved 1.9 times more than that of a comparable group of students who completed the same homework problems using a textbook publisher's online homework management system. When the Quantum Tutor was removed from the first group of students and given to the other group, the pattern of performance differences was reversed, with the tutored group gaining 2.6 times more than the online homework group. The complete paper can be downloaded at http://ssrn. com/abstract=1151804 (http://ssrn. com/abstract=1151804).

In both studies, the Quantum Tutor enabled students with initially weaker performance to catch up quickly to higher performing students. Furthermore, when the higher performing students used the Quantum Tutor, their test scores climbed even higher. Results also indicated that students' ability to account for transactions increased at a significantly faster rate when students used Quantum, suggesting their study time was more productive and targeted with the Quantum Tutors.

"From working with the Quantum Tutors, it's easy to see how this technology is beneficial to students," states Fred Phillips, Ph. D., Professor and Baxter Scholar at the Edwards School of Business, University of Saskatchewan and textbook author. "These studies show that Quantum's software yields highly significant learning effects, in both the statistical and practical sense. Students who use the Quantum Tutors demonstrate far greater gains than students who only used a textbook or online homework system. The research evidence is very persuasive that the Tutors have high value for students and instructors alike."

Unlike homework systems where "canned" responses are stored in a database, providing little feedback beyond whether a student's answer is right or wrong, the Quantum Tutors provide feedback on far more than just the correctness of an answer. The Quantum Tutors also give detailed step-by-step reasoning that essentially "teaches" the process used to reach a solution. Another unique feature of the software is the ability for students to ask very specific questions about a concept in the context of their own problem. By giving students feedback specific to their own work and teaching them to ask good questions, study time is optimized and knowledge of the subject greatly improves.

Designed as a supplemental tool for instructor lectures, textbook reading and homework assignments, the Quantum Tutors for the Accounting Cycle provide a level of intelligent homework help and tutoring not available with any other accounting software. In The Massive Debate On Nationalized Health Care, Where Does the Truth Lie? Dr. Wayne Liebhard's Updated Book Offers Insider Perspective

In The Massive Debate On Nationalized Health Care, Where Does the Truth Lie? Dr. Wayne Liebhard's Updated Book Offers Insider Perspective

A nation divided, once again. Not since the eve of the election have both Democrat and Republican agendas worked overtime to push those still sitting on the fence of health care reform, over to their own side. But in trying to uncover answers and make informed decisions, where do the agenda-driven politics end, and where does reality begin?

Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) September 11, 2009

Doctor and author Wayne D. Liebhard tears apart the myths popularized by pharmaceutical companies, the insurance industry, government entities, and yes, even patients, in the newly updated Elephants in the Exam Room: The Seven Things You Need To Know About Today's Health Care "Crisis" (Bascom Hill Publishing; September 2009; $15.95; ISBN 978-1-935098-20-1) His unique insider's perspective and extensive knowledge of the medical atmosphere and history in Minnesota - arguably the mecca of all things medicine, and home to such formative organizations as the Mayo Clinic (http://www. mayoclinic. com/) and UnitedHealth - allows him a no holds barred, forthright and occasionally jolting account of what's really going on inside our health care system.

The crux of Liebhard's argument is that America is not in a health care crisis, but rather that our health care delivery system is in peril. "As a society, we are fat, overstressed, overdrugged, and irresponsible," says Liebhard. Our stress and obesity leads to increases in hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, and more, equaling a higher demand for prescription drugs. Would we spend less on health care if Americans took better care of themselves? Of course.

But patients are not the only ones to blame. Pharmaceutical companies cry "research and development" costs but then pocket fifteen times their R&D costs, per year. The insurance industry burdens doctors with pay-for-performance guidelines, forcing them to choose between their ethics and their own certifications. Politicians argue for universal health care (http://en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Universal_health_care) and win votes, but are unarmed with the facts and workability. And the list goes on.

Elephants in the Exam Room aims to put the power back in the hands of those it rightfully belongs to: the doctors and patients. Hard-hitting, thoroughly-researched and unapologetic, Dr. Liebhard allows no one to stay hidden under the guise of ignorance or immobility. Elephants in the Exam Room is a fervent advocate for real change, right now, and is an essential, jarring read for all participants in and consumers of American health care. Visit www. OmegaMed. com for more information on this title.

About the author:
Dr. Wayne Liebhard has been practicing medicine in Minnesota for over 20 years. He is a former president of the University of Minnesota Medical Alumni Society and member of the Minnesota Medical Foundation. He holds degrees in the natural and social sciences from St John's University (MN0 and his articles have appeared in numerous publications including Minnesota Physician and the Star Tribune. New Treatment for Parkinson's Disease Gait Presented at the American Acadamy of Neurology Annual Meeting

New Treatment for Parkinson's Disease Gait Presented at the American Acadamy of Neurology Annual Meeting

A new, in-home training device with virtual reality cues improving gait and balance in patients with Parkinson's disease was presented by lead researcher Dr. Alberto Espay at the American Acadamy of Neurology annual meeting.

Cincinnati, OH (PRWEB) January 25, 2010

Quality of life and motor function are impaired by shuffling and freezing of gait in people with Parkinson's disease (PD).

It is well known that certain auditory and visual cues can improve motor function in people with PD.

Dr. Alberto Espay, presented the results of his study which showed successful treatment of gait impairment for Parkinson's disease by using a new patented device, the GaitAid.

Patients in the study received the device for in-home use during a two week period. The participants used the device daily for 20 minutes. Gait parameters were measured before, during and after the two week period.

Over 70% of patients in this study improved their gait.

Dr. Espay concluded his presentation: "Gait velocity and stride length were improved in PD patients with a marked residual (lasting) effect.".

During his platform presentation, Dr. Espay acknowleged this device as a "desirable, non-pharmacologic, intervention to improve walking in PD.", noting that the device is low cost, easy to use (no training by professionals is needed to use the device at home ) and it provides improved functioning by the patient during and after use.

The devices used in this study are registered with the FDA as the GaitAid device and are available for a one month trial period to individuals, clinicians, and retirement homes at the company's website: www. medigait. com (http://www. medigait. com)

More information about the GaitAid device as well as clinical trials is available on MediGait's website.

About Dr. Espay:
Dr. Alberto Espay completed his Neurology training at Indiana University, where he was awarded the Alexander Treloar Ross Award Honorable Mention for the most outstanding paper by a neurology resident. He trained in Movement Disorders at the Toronto Western Hospital, with Dr. Anthony Lang, during 2001-2003. He then completed a Dystonia Medical Research Foundation Clinical Research Fellowship with special training in Electrophysiology of Movement Disorders, with Dr. Robert Chen, and a thesis-based MSc Graduate program in Clinical Epidemiology and Health Care Research at the University of Toronto, both during 2003-2005. Dr. Espay received a two-year Sam and Fran Belzberg and Dennis and Barbara Kessler DMRF award for his study “Pathophysiology of Psychogenic Dystonia,” published by the Annals of Neurology in 2006. He has published 27 peer-reviewed articles and has authored 6 book chapters and 24 published abstracts and presented papers.  Dr. Espay has been awarded the Dean’s Scholar in Clinical Research Award by the University of Cincinnati for the years 06/07, 07/08, and 08/09 which “fosters the career development of promising junior faculty in clinical research.” Dr. Espay is the principal investigator in four ongoing investigator-initiated clinical studies at the University of Cincinnati, including a clinical trial sponsored by the Michael J. Fox Foundation, evaluating the effects of methylphenidate on the freezing of gait in patients with Parkinson’s disease. He serves as a member of the Institutional Research Board at the University of Cincinnati and is an ad hoc reviewer for 13 neurology and medical journals. Dr. Espay is the founder and director of the Toronto Western Extended Research Network, a community of movement disorders neurologists designing and developing common clinical research protocols. He has been an Assistant Professor of Neurology at the University of Cincinnati since July 2005.

About the GaitAid and MediGait:
The idea for the GaitAid project was sparked 12 years ago while Professor Baram was designing a mechanism for NASA to navigate low-flying helicopters around obstacles. The concept of the design, which Baram later applied to the medical device, is that the optical images of objects help the observer navigate, stabilize and pace movement in space.

Under stress? Start Laughtercising™ with new CD

Under stress? Start Laughtercising™ with new CD

Laughtercising(TM) is a new form of exercise utilizing the healing powers of laughter to help ward off stress.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) September 22, 2004

Laughter has been proven to reduce stress, improve heart health and even help you lose weight. This is the impetus behind the "Laughtercising(tm) CD available at heyugly. org for $10.00. Don't let the name fool you; Hey U G L Y Inc., developed in 2001, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to help pre-teens and teens counter bullying, eating disorders, violence, substance abuse and suicide. UGLY is an acronym meaning unique, gifted, lovable, you and proceeds from the CD help to support this cause.

Instructions on the "Laughtercising" CD advise listeners to laugh continuously for at least one minute. Every day, increase the laugh session until you can laugh for ten minutes for a great, workout. The CD is 60 minutes so it can be used as a mood adjuster by playing it in the background as white noise while studying or at work. Comedien Tom Dreesen uses the CD to combat Road Rage. When he's stuck in traffic he plays the CD to reduce his stress.

CAN LAUGHTER ACTUALLY REDUCE STRESS?

According to Dr. Andrew Weil, "Laughter is one of the most effective ways to reduce stress, and preliminary research suggests laughter may also boost immunity, relieve pain, lower blood sugar in people with type-2 diabetes, and help protect against heart disease."

"When you are stressed and have anxiety, there's an activation of various stress areas in the brain," says Dr. Bruce Rabin, director of the Healthy Lifestyle Program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. "This alters the concentration of various hormones in blood. These stress hormones have a variety of impacts on health - you feel stressed, they impair your ability to think over time, they increase cholesterol in the heart, and they change how the immune system functions."

Up to 80 muscles are used during a hearty laugh, the blood pressure rises, the heart beats faster and blood oxygen levels increase. In fact, a study released by German gelotologist, Professor Gunther Sickl, revealed that a one-minute guffaw has the same health benefits as a 45-minute gym workout. When the laughter stops, the blood pressure returns to normal and stress hormones are reduced - actually strengthening the immune system.

Statement of Need:
A major treatment goal for alcohol dependence is to increase rates of abstinence. When used in combination with psychosocial support, pharmacologic agents can help committed patients reach this goal. However, physicians continue to struggle with challenges in the management of alcohol dependence. Issues surrounding treatment adherence, understanding the evidence for various treatment options, the impact of combination treatments, and the special challenge of co-occurring disorders all complicate effective management. Efforts to provide clinicians with the tools to address these barriers are imperative to improving outcomes for our patients. In this neuroscienceCME podcast series, experts will address these issues and give clinicians tools that they can utilize in their practice to improve the outcomes of their patients with alcohol dependence.

Insurance Companies' Profiting From Tough Economy at the Expense of Las Vegas Accident Victims Prompts Craig Murphy, Esq. to Write Book

Insurance Companies' Profiting From Tough Economy at the Expense of Las Vegas Accident Victims Prompts Craig Murphy, Esq. to Write Book

Insurance companies in Las Vegas have been using strong arm tactics and economic hardship to extract pennies on the dollar settlements from Las Vegas automobile accident and injury victims. Las Vegas attorney Craig Murphy, Esq. wrote "The Ultimate Consumer's Guide to Nevada Car Crash Cases" to help Las Vegas accident and injury victims in dealing with insurance companies and understanding the claims process. According to Craig Murphy, Esq. his Nevada Car Crash Book is a self-help book that places Las Vegas accident and injury victims on an equal footing with the insurance adjusters. Craig Murphy, Esq. gives "The Ultimate Consumer's Guide to Nevada Car Crash Cases" to Las Vegas accident and injury victims at no charge upon request to his office, Murphy & Murphy Law Offices. Craig Murphy, Esq.'s book can be requested through his web site www. nvpilaw. com or through the web site www. nevadacarcrashbook. com.

Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) July 14, 2010

Insurance companies are using hard economic times and strong arm tactics to extract pennies on the dollar settlements from already strapped Las Vegas automobile accident and injury victims. Craig Murphy, Esq. Las Vegas automobile accident attorney and injury trial lawyer says that "insurance adjusters know that people in Las Vegas are hurting economically these days." The economic statistics back up Craig Murphy, Esq.'s statement. At the current time, Nevada has the highest unemployment rate in the country. Las Vegas, Nevada's largest city, leads the list. In addition, Las Vegas tops all lists for the number of home foreclosures in the country. No segment of the Las Vegas population has avoided the pitfalls and hard times of this economy.

According to Craig Murphy, Esq., insurance companies know that many people in Las Vegas are hurting economically. When someone is injured in a Las Vegas auto accident, their life is often thrown in to turmoil. Their car is damaged. Their car often does not work or cannot be driven. The car has to be inspected, evaluated and an insurance adjuster has to determine the value of the repairs. The accident victim is often without a car for days.

In addition to the damage to the car, the accident victim has to obtain medical treatment. The medical treatment causes a number of problems. If the injury victim does not have health insurance, they have to pay for their medical treatment or find a doctor who will bill them for later payment. Even if they have insurance, they must pay co-pays and other treatment related expenses. If the injuries are serious enough, the Las Vegas accident victim will be unable to work. For most people in Las Vegas that means no income for the days of missed work. According to Craig Murphy, Esq. that is often a "double whammy." The accident victim's injuries prevent him from being able to work and his medical bills and other regular bills keep piling up. With no income coming in to the household, and an ever increasing mountain of bills and expenses, many Las Vegas accident and injury victims are over an economic barrel. Especially if their income has already been reduced, they are behind on their bills or their house is in foreclosure. For people who are already feeling the harsh effects of the economy, being injured in an accident can be the straw that breaks the camel's back and sends them over the edge of economic oblivion.

Increasingly over the past couple of years Craig Murphy, Esq. has been receiving calls from Las Vegas automobile accident victims who have not been able to settle their claims. According to Craig Murphy, Esq. even in cases of clear liability and clear injuries and damages, the insurance companies refuse to pay the medical bills for the treatment required from the automobile accident. Since the insurance companies will not even offer to pay the medical bills, other items such as out of pocket expenses and lost income are out of the question. The insurance companies know that those who are really hurting for money will often have no choice but to accept anything the insurance company will offer to help pay their ever increasing monthly bills. Faced with increasing numbers of calls from Las Vegas injury victims in claims where his involvement would only reduce the amount of money the injury victim could expect to receive, Craig Murphy, Esq. wrote "The Ultimate Consumer's Guide to Nevada Car Crash Cases."

Craig Murphy, Esq. said that the "Ultimate Consumer's Guide to Nevada Car Crash Cases" was his attempt to inform the public of their rights when they have been involved in a Nevada automobile accident. He calls the book "The Nevada Car Crash Book." He says that the book explains the claims process in detail. It takes a step-by-step approach to the claims procedure and explains each step. According to Craig Murphy, Esq. "The Ultimate Consumer's Guide to Nevada Car Crash Cases" is a self help guide that equals the playing field between an automobile accident injury victim and an experienced insurance adjuster.

In addition to the step by step explanation of the claims procedure, the book provides useful forms and explains the litigation process. Craig Murphy, Esq. says that some of the most important features of the book are the portions that explain common situations where many Las Vegas automobile accident victims do not need an attorney to represent them.

When a person does need to hire a Las Vegas lawyer, the book explains how a person should go about hiring the right lawyer for their case. Craig Murphy, Esq. says that hiring a lawyer "is one of the most important decisions a person will make affecting their case." A person should take the appropriate amount of time investigating and researching lawyers as is necessary. A person should also interview a number of lawyers before deciding which attorney to hire. The decision is too important to just sign up with the first lawyer a person talks to. It should really be an interviewing process according to Murphy. "A lawsuit requires a team effort between the client and the lawyer" says Craig Murphy, Esq. The client will have the attorney for many years in some cases. Craig Murphy, Esq. says "the client must make sure that he or she can work with the attorney and that he or she is comfortable with the attorney now and into the future." When asked why choosing a lawyer for a Las Vegas automobile accident is so important, Craig Murphy, Esq. said it is because "the insurance companies evaluate the attorney on the claim. If the Las Vegas attorney is not a trial lawyer and does not go to court, the insurance companies have little to fear." Craig Murphy, Esq. said that "hiring a lawyer who does not take cases to trial is like relying on a lifeguard who does not know how to swim."

When asked why he is giving "The Ultimate Consumer's Guide to Nevada Car Crash Cases" away to Las Vegas automobile injury victims for free, Craig Murphy, Esq. said that he "does it as a public service. This type of information is controlled by attorneys and usually not available to the public. If it is, there is often a high price tag on the information. I wanted to give it to the people who need it the most. In addition, if they do need a lawyer, I hope that they remember me."

In addition to providing free copies of "The Ultimate Consumer's Guide to Nevada Car Crash Cases" to Las Vegas auto accident victims, attorney Craig Murphy, Esq. and the other attorneys at Murphy & Murphy Law Offices in Las Vegas, Nevada will answer any questions Las Vegas injury victims have. People interested in getting a copy of "The Ultimate Consumer's Guide to Nevada Car Crash Cases" can order their copy from the Murphy & Murphy Law Offices web site at www. nvpilaw. com, www. nevadacarcrashbook. com, or can call Murphy & Murphy Law Offices at 702.369.9696.

Schindler Debuts PORT Technology at Louisville’s Humana Waterside Building

Schindler Debuts PORT Technology at Louisville’s Humana Waterside Building

First building in North America to benefit from Intuitive PORT elevator technology from Schindler; Brings concept of customizable applications or “apps”; Increases efficiency and energy savings

Morristown, NJ (PRWEB) November 17, 2010

Representing a fundamental shift from simply moving an elevator cab up and down, Schindler has installed its first perceptive PORT (Personal Occupant Requirement Terminal) Technology system at Humana’s 12-story Waterside building in Louisville, Kentucky.

Functioning as a two-way communication interface between the occupants and Humana’s environment, The PORT system learns the specific travel patterns of each associate in the building to provide them with premium elevator service. The system’s interface and CPU are in constant communication with one another to provide Humana building management, its associates, and visitors the most up-to-date information through the most advanced customizable traffic management and vertical transportation tool available in the industry today.

Using a sleek touch-screen user interface similar to a high-powered iPod as its shell, The PORT computing power brings to Humana the concept of customizable applications or “app” and updates the travel patterns of each associate as they change.

“They say you can learn a lot about a person by taking a look at the apps on their iPod, “said Michael Landis, vice president, Marketing at Schindler. “Similarly, with PORT Technology, Humana management can now look at the applications built into the building and tell a lot about the travel patterns of Humana associates on the elevator system.”

What makes the system special is the ease with which a building manager or owner can design applications to accommodate a wide range of needs in real time. Whether it’s helping to meet new energy efficiency goals, updating security, scheduling maintenance or adapting to people with special needs, unprecedented levels of customization can be achieved.

The PORT technology interface and main computer communicate seamlessly with the building’s security and access control systems so that proper admission credentials and authorizations are in place before allowing access to the elevators, providing greater safety and a higher degree of control.

Humana improved the building’s elevator performance and efficiency by 250% and reduced customer wait times from 2 minutes to 30 seconds with the installation of Schindler ID® destination dispatch in 2007.

“This 12-story building moves as many tenants as some skyscrapers,” said Humana
Workplace Solutions Associate Steve Evans. “We are very pleased with the efficiency of Schindler ID. Now with The PORT system, our associates get much more than just an elevator ride. They get a journey, moving and experiencing their environment with more comfort and efficiency than ever before.”

“We love The PORT system,” adds Evans. “Because of its innovative technology, we’re using our elevators more efficiently and we’re seeing real energy savings which support our ongoing sustainability efforts.”

Energy Saving Features
Each PORT terminal’s proximity sensor tells it when to be active and at all other times puts it into low energy consumption mode. When the terminal screen illuminates, an ambient light sensor determines only the brightness level required, again optimizing energy usage. The PORT Technology helps ensure elevator trips are as efficient as possible. This produces a very resourceful use of energy even during heavy traffic. During light traffic the PORT Energy Control Option places nonessential elevators into an energy-conserving standby mode.
