E-BariatricSurgery. com Explains Bariatric Surgery Complications

Minor complications can include dietary intolerance, hair loss, dry skin, menstrual irregularities, or pain.

E-BariatricSurgery. com explains that, although many patients have few problems after bariatric surgery, there is the potential for complications, both small and large, just as there is with any surgical procedure. Minor complications can include dietary intolerance, hair loss, dry skin, menstrual irregularities, or pain. Other complications that may occur include dumping, stenosis, a narrowing of the gastric pouchÂ’s outlet, vitamin or mineral deficiencies and anemia, gallstones, and vomiting caused by stretching the pouch.

More serious risks, ones that may need emergency attention, include bleeding, blood clots, infection, leakage of stomach acids, bowel obstructions, or hernia. Additional surgeries may be needed to correct any health problems that occur because of these complications. Of course, death is a risk as well, although the risk is less than one percent. Patients with a very high BMI and/or severe medical conditions are at the highest risk, but death can also occur in any patient.

E-BariatricSurgery. com also explains that, although significant weight loss occurs for nearly all bariatric surgery patients, regaining the weight is also a risk. Patients who do not maintain their lifestyle changes and eating behaviors may fall back into old habits and find that the scale is beginning to creep back up. Although significant weight gain after the initial weight loss is fairly infrequent, those who do experience it may have feelings of failure and depression.

The Ten Traits of Legendary Leaders

The Ten Traits of Legendary Leaders

There are certain traits that separate great leaders from average leaders. These ten traits make are present in legendary leaders.

(PRWEB) May 27, 2005

What is the difference between leaders that are great and other leaders? This is an area that has been studied by many writers like John Kotter in The General Managers, Warren Bennis in On Becoming a Leader, and Burt Nanus in Visionary Leadership. But after consulting with dozens of CEOÂ’s and executives in fortune 500 companies, here are the ten traits that we have seen most often with great leaders. Legendary leaders:

1. Seek significance (people) rather than success (money). Great leaders are focused on people; their families, employees, and customers. They evaluate each initiative, plan and decision as to the impact on these key stakeholders. People are consistently put first at work and at home.

2. Serve a purpose rather than achieve results. In a corporate world where quarterly results and profits are the barometer of success, effective leaders resist the pressure for immediate gratification and focus on long term purpose. They evaluate new product and services based on the needs in the marketplace and how they can improve the lives of the users.

3. Focus on “what can I give?” rather than “what can I get?” Great leaders follow a philosophy of abundance. They know that the more they give, the more that returns. Instead of fighting to get a bigger piece of the pie, they work to make the pie larger.

4. Do the right thing regardless of the outcome. Legendary leaders listen to their guts and follow a moral compass. With a high value on creativity and intuition, great leaders take time each day for reflection and meditation. They know that creativity does not take place in a cluttered mind.

5. Expect in advance for things to go wrong. Problems are not only anticipated they are sought out by great leaders. They know that every computer conversion, new product launch and corporate initiative will result in glitches. They openly communicate this to staff so all are comfortable with change and, at times, ambiguity.

6. Redefine failure for learning. When things do go wrong, effective leaders view these times as opportunities for learning. They analyze and evaluate what could be improved, re-designed, or scrapped. They actively encourage those around them to also participate in a “learning” process and recognize that experimenting is essential for knowledge.

7. Resist “urgency addiction.” The bane of multi-taskers, great leaders resist the addictive tendency to run around putting out brush fires rather than staying focused on what’s important. They avoid the caffeinated tyranny of the urgent to follow through and complete what is truly significant. They guide others in the organization to resist the “hop-scotching” that decreases productivity.

8. Stay focused on vision. Like a rudder for a ship, vision guides effective leaders each day, week, and month. They communicate the vision for the organization frequently so all employees understand and can implement what is important. They have employees and customers participate in the vision and direction of where the organization is going to increase loyalty and commitment.

9. Do not take rejection personally. Great leaders donÂ’t spend time keeping score or worrying about their popularity. They know that the key to success is the recognition that they will never please everyone. With careful consideration they listen to feedback, especially unpopular opinions. They know that this may offer some of the most valuable insights.

10. Keep a sense of humor. A healthy funny bone allows the great leader to maintain balance, reduce stress and enjoy each day. They communicate the humor to their team and employees which set a positive tone in the organization. The legendary leader knows that happy employees provide effective customer service, are likely to stay long-term, and recruit other positive employees to join the team.

If You Want to Be Fit, Never Neglected Your Sport Shoes

If You Want to Be Fit, Never Neglected Your Sport Shoes

As many of you has heard that walking and other outdoor activities bring benefit to your health, but many of us neglect the need for high quality walking shoes and apparel.

(PRWEB) September 3, 2005

Sport shoes, such as walking shoes and running shoes, are gears which should not hurt your feet. Unfortunately, when choosing wrong shoes, the reality is different. You may suffer pain, swollen, and other uncomfortable problems because of the shoes you wore.

To avoid problems, you better choose your exercise shoes wisely. As many of you has heard that walking and other outdoor activities bring benefit to your health, but many of us neglect the need for high quality walking shoes and apparel.

Surely, donÂ’t think that when you participate in a low impact sport you donÂ’t need right shoes. Whether you work out three times a week at a gym, or you spend every evening taking a nightly stroll, you need to protect your feet if you want to keep working out. Get the right shoes for your own good.

Walking and also running are activities that can make you healthy and make you relax. If you have health problem or you want to have fit body, just do some walking and running! You can do it a few minutes or hours in a day. So, there is nothing bad with walking and running, except choosing the right shoes.

To help you avoiding that condition, here are some tips you might need when choosing the right shoes:

Choose for a low, supportive heel that rounds or bevels in. Find a flexible sole and more bend in the toe, so you will able to twist and bend the toe area. Look for a shoe that is light weight and breathable Make sure the shoes fit properly. There should be a thumbnails width or about a half inch between your toes and the end of the shoe. Shop for shoes after walking or at the end of the day, when your feet may be slightly swollen. Wear the same socks you will be wearing during your walks while fitting the shoes. Try to walk around while fitting. If possible a few minutes on hard surface. Wear your shoes in the house for a few days to try them out. Don't go outside until you are sure the shoes are going to work for you. Depending on your age and your overall physical state, it's important to check with your doctor to make sure that you're not overdoing it.

Do those tips help? Find out more at http://www. walking-shoes. info (http://www. walking-shoes. info) and http://www. my-running-shoes. info (http://www. my-running-shoes. info). Try to believe that when you bought a good pair of walking shoes, that is an investment that will last for a long time to come. There are a great deal of delicate bones in your feet that need protection and support. DonÂ’t injure yourself due of bad gear.

It's also a good idea to get a feel for the type of shoes that best fit your foot. Nothing is worse than wearing a tight fitting pair of shoes that leave your feet aching for hours afterwards. When you give your feet room to breathe and arch support, you can improve your performance, and overall physical fitness level.

Such shoes are available in Internet. You can shop online through this marvellous technology. Do your exercise once you find your right walking shoes and running shoes.

SIMmersion, LLC awarded Phase I SBIR from U. S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command

SIMmersion, LLC awarded Phase I SBIR from U. S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command

Today SIMmersion, LLC announces its award of a Phase I Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) contract, granted by the U. S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command in support of the Department of Defense SBIR Program (http://www. dodsbir. net/about/about. htm).

(PRWEB) April 20, 2005

Today SIMmersion, LLC announces its award of a Phase I Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) contract, granted by the U. S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command in support of the Department of Defense SBIR Program (http://www. dodsbir. net/about/about. htm (http://www. dodsbir. net/about/about. htm)).

SIMmersion LLC (http://www. SIMmersion. com (http://www. SIMmersion. com)) will work in partnership with the National Capital Area Medical Simulation Center [(SimCen), http://simcen. usuhs. mil (http://simcen. usuhs. mil)] and the Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine, Inc. (http://www. hjf. org/ (http://www. hjf. org/)) to develop computer simulated patients. Ultimately, the simulation will be used as part of the DoDÂ’s programs for training early detection of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and high explosive (CBRNE) events.

The simulation, to be built by SIMmersion, will train physicians and other clinicians to distinguish between symptoms associated with an attack and similar symptoms associated with common ailments. Specifically, this human interactive simulation will train physicians to distinguish between smallpox, chicken pox, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Medical practitioners will have the opportunity to speak with a simulated patient to identify symptoms, make a diagnosis, and to implement a patient management plan.

To create a patient for the software, SIMmersion will use video of an actor. The realism of the simulated patient will be further enhanced by a memory and an advanced emotional model; in combination, these functions enable the character to respond to the physicianÂ’s statements as a real patient would. They will interact with the simulated patient in a face-to-face conversation using a microphone or a mouse to communicate. User statements and questions are scripted to include a variety of natural choices; likewise, the responses are scripted to emulate what real people would say at the current stage of the conversation given the motives and character of the simulated person.

The patient simulation will be different every time the simulation is used. User feedback will given in a variety of ways including an on-screen help agent that provides non-verbal cues, help buttons for both user questions and character responses, scoring, and instant replay features that enable users to review portions of their conversation or the entire dialogue.

Training physicians to properly identify smallpox is a critical, proactive step in response to the potential threat of a biological attack. Physicians must have the knowledge, experience, and confidence to accurately diagnose smallpox and to implement an appropriate patient management plan. Accordingly, the patient simulation will build skills, increase confidence, and improve information retention to create a training solution that currently thousands of physicians need. Reduced training costs and increased accessibility of the product are important attributes of SIMmersionÂ’s simulations.

Upon completion of Phase I in July 2005, an evaluation will determine the effectiveness of the system for identifying the indicators of a potential terrorist attack. Contingent on a Phase II SBIR award, SIMmersion will create a fully developed simulation system for use by the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences and will expand its market to government agencies and civilian medical organizations. This medical training simulation is the first in a series planned by SIMmersion.

About SIMmersion, LLC

SIMmersion LLC, a spin-off of Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, is a software development company in Columbia, MD. The realistic simulations developed by SIMmersion build skills and increase learner retention. Each simulation designed and created by SIMmersion is customizable to meet specific client training needs.

Health Direct Inspires its Webmaster to Lose Weight

Health Direct Inspires its Webmaster to Lose Weight

Christopher Loch, Webmaster for Health Direct, recently challenged himself to successfully lose excess weight using the company's weight loss supplements.

Costa Mesa, CA (PRWEB) March 20, 2007

Health Direct, a weight loss supplement formulator, announces that its latest success story revolves around one of its own employees. Christopher Loch, a Webmaster hired in late 2006 to boost Health Direct's online sales efforts, recently dropped 20 pounds in less than 60 days, an accomplishment he attributes to Health Direct's weight loss supplements.

"When I started working with Health Direct, I received a box full of their weight loss products so I could get familiar with them. Rather than let them sit on the shelf as a reference, I decided to put them to good use," Loch said. "It was right around New Year's and -- like most people -- I had a New Year's resolution to lose weight. When I started losing weight quickly I called Jim Caras, the CEO of Health Direct, to let him know what had happened."

Loch is continuing to lose weight by following Health Direct's weight loss program (http://www. reshapebook. com) and by taking the weight loss supplements (http://www. healthdirectusa. com) recommended by the program, which offers tips on boosting metabolism, regularly exercising and safely losing weight. Health Direct's wide selection of supplements is part of a well-researched, results-driven product line with a guaranteed positive outcome. With this in mind, Loch plans to continue losing weight and is striving to lose 50 total pounds by the end of 2007.

"Based on 10 years of experience with these products, I told Chris that he could reasonably expect to lose 20 pounds in the first 90 days, so I was really surprised to see him lose 20 pounds in only 58 days," said Jim Caras, CEO of Health Direct. "We're very proud of Chris and the progress he is making so far."

Each week, Sharon and her guest experts from around the world present new wellness discoveries to help the listener, and future generations, survive and thrive in an increasingly dry and unhealthy environment. Yorkon Awarded Contracts Totaling £5m to Build New Healthcare Facilities at Surrey Hospital

Yorkon Awarded Contracts Totaling £5m to Build New Healthcare Facilities at Surrey Hospital

Award-winning off-site construction specialist and Portakabin subsidiary, Yorkon, has been awarded contracts totalling more than £5m to build new healthcare facilities at St. Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey, Surrey.

(PRWEB) October 5, 2005

Award-winning off-site construction specialist and Portakabin subsidiary, Yorkon, has been awarded contracts totalling more than £5m to build new healthcare facilities at St. Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey, Surrey.

These latest contracts bring the value of Yorkon’s work in the healthcare sector so far this year to over £20m.

With this latest investment, the local community in Chertsey will benefit from a new purpose-designed day surgery unit and additional ward accommodation providing 56 in-patient beds for emergency admissions.

Both buildings have now been manufactured off-site and craned into position over three weekends to reduce disruption to hospital staff and patients, and remove the need for decanting. This more innovative approach to construction will also ensure a faster programme time.

Designed by Todd Architects, the two-storey ward block will comprise 10 four-bed wards and 16 single bedrooms. Additional facilities include a nurse’s station, bathrooms, toilets, patient’s day room, discharge lounge, offices, staff room and a link to the main hospital ‘street’. Externally, the scheme will be clad in brickwork, rendered panels and cedar boarding to create an attractive finish as the building is prominently located at the Duchess of Kent Wing, one of the main hospital entrances.

The day surgery unit, which will be fitted out by Yorkon and linked to the main hospital building, will comprise an operating theatre, anaesthetics room, preparation area, reception and a 12-bed recovery ward.

Commenting on the construction projects, Peter Curtis, Capital Projects Manager for Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust, said, “The locations of both of these new schemes are constrained by other buildings on this busy hospital site. Moving much of the construction work off-site and into a factory has allowed us to expand the facilities at St. Peter’s with as little disruption to the running of the hospital as possible.”

He added, “These are challenging projects and I am pleased to report that we have been impressed by the efficiency of the cranage and installation process. Off-site construction was more cost-effective for these two schemes than site-based building methods. It is also important to have both buildings fully operational quickly in order for us to complete a major reorganisation of service provision ahead of the busy winter months. The modular approach will enable us to achieve this.”

The two construction projects undertaken by Yorkon are part of a £13m reconfiguration programme which involves the relocation of emergency and medical services to St. Peter’s Hospital and elective surgery to Ashford Hospital including the creation of an Orthopaedic Treatment Centre and rehabilitation services at that hospital.

CoSign Digital Signatures Enable Compliance With New HIPAA Guidelines

CoSign Digital Signatures Enable Compliance With New HIPAA Guidelines

ARX's CoSign® digital signature (standard electronic signature) solution provides a signing capability that satisfies the new HIPAA guidelines on privacy issues.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) April 2, 2009

ARX today announced that its CoSign digital signature solution (http://www. arx. com/products/cosign-digital-signatures. php) allows users to maintain compliance with the revised HIPAA regulations (http://www. arx. com/documents/CoSign-Digital-Signatures-and-HIPAA. php) the United States Congress released in December of 2008, detailing the responsibilities healthcare providers have in maintaining the privacy and security of medical records.

The regulations released in the last quarter of 2008 have three principle areas that relate to digital signatures: 1) The Transparency Principle, which calls for health care providers to make a good faith effort to obtain an individual's written acknowledgment for receipt of their Notice of Privacy Policy (NPP), 2) The Individual Choice Principle, calling for a patient authorization for any use or disclosure of Personal Health Information (PHI), and 3) The Safeguards Principle, requiring the verification of the identity and authority of a person requesting PHI. CoSign digital signatures can be used to demonstrate compliance with each of the privacy regulations by capturing signature authorizations and consent, and then validating the authenticity of those signatures.

"The CoSign digital signature solution already meets the HIPAA Security requirements as presented in the Final Rule 45 CFR Part 164.312, as well as the more specific and restrictive requirements of the earlier Proposed Rule 45 CFR Part 142.310," said Mike Milton, VP of Sales, Americas, ARX. "Since the new privacy guidelines specifically mention electronic signatures as an option for identity authentication, CoSign is the ideal signature solution for healthcare organizations that need to maintain an electronic workflow from signature authorization through archival."

ARX will be attending the HIMSS09 Conference & Exhibition in Chicago, Illinois April 5-9th. During the event, ARX representatives will exhibit the CoSign digital signature solution at booth #2507. Also during the event, ARX's Healthcare Market Manager, Mauricio Pinto, will be giving a presentation titled "Using Digital Signatures to Simplify the Business of Healthcare" at the Pavilion Product Sessions. The presentation will take place April 7th from 4:15- 5:00pm at booth #8239, and it will address how digital signatures enable a fully electronic workflow and enhance collaboration for healthcare organizations.

Lechuza's New "Rondo" Self-Watering Planter Makes Bold Style Statement

Lechuza's New "Rondo" Self-Watering Planter Makes Bold Style Statement

The Rondo's gently contoured column design commands attention while its hidden German engineered self-watering system ensures its plants will be healthy and beautiful.

Cranbury, NJ (PRWEB) August 31, 2010

Lechuza's planters are exceptional for their combination of function, form and convenience and their newest "Rondo" (http://www. lechuza. com/on/demandware. store/Sites-US-Site/en_US/Link-Category? cgid=) is no exception. Rising from the floor in a gently contoured round design, the Rondo sets the stage for dramatic plantings that virtually take care of themselves.

The Rondo's finish shines with a ceramic-like beauty or metallic glow while it lifts plants with height that creates an impressive visual focal point in a room or on a deck. There is no denying that this planter can be admired for its beauty alone, but what really makes it exceptional is what lies underneath its striking exterior.

At the heart of every Lechuza planter is a German engineered self-watering system (http://www. lechuza. com/on/demandware. store/Sites-US-Site/en_US/Search-Show? cgid=S) that makes growing and maintaining beautiful plants easier than ever before. Inside is a liner that holds the plant, its soil and a layer of a special granular medium that perfectly controls the supply of water to the plant. In the liner is a water reservoir that is filled from the top of the planter via a convenient supply shaft. A water level indicator makes it easy to see when more water is needed. For outdoor use there is a removable drain plug that prevents over-watering during rainy periods.

The Rondo's unique design also makes changing plants a snap. The planter's liner is equipped with recessed handles that make it simple to lift the plant and liner out leaving the exterior behind.

"The Rondo is exceptional not just because it looks great," said Anton Zevenbergen, National Sales Manager for Lechuza. "It is not that difficult to design a beautiful planter, but to design one that looks like this and takes care of the plant for you - that is a tough challenge."

The Rondo stands 32" tall and is 16" in diameter. It is available in either aubergine, pearl-beige, white, black or scarlet red high gloss finishes and is also available in silver charcoal or espresso metallic.

All Lechuza planters are recyclable and the international recycling logo is proudly imbedded on each planter. Plastic waste produced during the manufacturing process is recycled in-house and its subsequent granulated material is re-used in the production of Lechuza's self-watering accessories.

IRVINE, Calif. (PRWEB) November 7, 2006

Dynamic Healthcare Systems, a provider of innovative solutions for Medicare-focused health MSO's and plans, today announced that the Inland Empire Health Plan (IEHP) has purchased Dynamic's complete Voyager product suite to automate and streamline back office operations while ensuring compliance with guidelines issued by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The Voyager product suite provides IEHP with comprehensive Medicare Advantage management capabilities, from automated enrollment, and revenue reconciliation to risk adjustment analytics.

The move to 100% compensation using the HCC model and the start of the budget neutrality factor phase out, place significant pressure on Medicare Advantage plans like IEHP to increase and maintain the highest possible risk scores. The Dynamic Healthcare Systems' Voyager product suite of Revenue Reconciliation, HCC Analysis and RAPS Management modules automate and streamline the internal processes of the health plan or managed care organization. It also provides companies the ability to deliver process improvement and new analysis in an increasingly time critical manner to maximize revenue and limit cost.

Voyager's HCC Analytics module applies proprietary algorithms to qualified encounter data and unqualified secondary sources like, lab results, DME, and prescription encounters, to uncover suspected gaps in ICD-9 code reporting. Plans and MSOs use Dynamic's work queues, detailed patient profiles and sophisticated report libraries to verify the suspects in medical records, document the actual outcomes and submit them to CMS.

"Dynamic was created specifically to provide software and services to Medicare Advantage Plans, MSOs and physician groups as well as Special Need Plans, Stand Alone Part D providers, PACE and demonstration plans," said Ken Stockman, Dynamic's founder and CEO. "Our goal is to offer companies like IEHP comprehensive business solutions that can improve on back-office operations, better manage costs and increase profitability as they and their customers comply with CMS rules and regulations."

Groundbreaking Documentary “A New Picture of Health” Sheds New Light on the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria

Groundbreaking Documentary “A New Picture of Health” Sheds New Light on the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria

Jane Goodall narrates footage connecting statistics and data with firsthand accounts from countries around the globe, United Nations Foundation premieres the film at the African Union Summit in Uganda July 26

Kampala, Uganda (Vocus) July 26, 2010

The United Nations Foundation announced a milestone documentary examining the work of the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria (The Global Fund) and its ongoing impact in saving millions of lives, particularly of women and children, across the developing world. At present, 4.9 million lives –3,600 a day – have been saved by Global Fund programs. The film takes an in-depth look at initiatives supported by the Global Fund and presents a timely perspective on its work to empower local communities, strengthen health systems, and create healthier, more productive societies.

“This documentary chronicles how investments in health are empowering communities and putting an end to diseases of poverty; I was deeply moved through narrating the film,” said Dr. Jane Goodall, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and renowned conservationist who has spent 50 years working in central Africa. “The film is a powerful testament of individuals, communities, and nations working together to improve the lives of millions. It is my fervent hope that viewers will be inspired to join this important fight."

The documentary, called “A New Picture of Health,” includes compelling footage and direct impact stories of the Global Fund’s programs in Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Indonesia, and was filmed in broadcast-quality Hi Definition by filmmaker David Evans in April and May of 2010.

The Global Fund is a unique global public-private partnership dedicated to attracting and disbursing resources to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. To date, the Global Fund has committed over $10.9 billion to Africa, making it the single largest multilateral financing mechanism for the health sector in that region.

“At times, the impact of our work cannot be conveyed through numbers, graphs, and charts. By showing firsthand glimpses of the power that improved health systems bring to people all over the world, this film renews our collective determination to fight AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria to the finish,” said Michel Kazatchkine, Executive Director of the Global Fund.

2010 is an important year for The Global Fund, as it faces a replenishment need of between $13 and $20 billion over three years (2011-2013). Of this amount, more than half will support programs in Africa. The Global Fund’s replenishment occurs at a critical point—the two-thirds mark in achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

“Each year, hundreds of thousands of women lose their lives during pregnancy or childbirth, and close to 8 million children die before their fifth birthday,” added Kathy Calvin, Chief Executive Officer of the United Nations Foundation. “Full replenishment of the Global Fund will propel the United Nations Joint Action Plan for Women and Children’s Health, established by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, to prevent millions of needless deaths and improve the well-being of mothers and children everywhere.”

“We are very fortunate to have Dr. Goodall as a partner in this important film project that captures impact of investments in health,” said Dr. Daniel J. Carucci, MD, PhD, Vice President for Global Health with the United Nations Foundation and the film’s Executive Producer. “Dr. Goodall shares our passion and commitment for bringing all stakeholders together to see a healthier, stronger, and more productive world.”

INDIANA'S GREEN CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE ATTACTS OPPONENT FOR REMARKS

INDIANA'S GREEN CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE ATTACTS OPPONENT FOR REMARKS

Jeff Melton publicly criticized incumbent Democrat Baron Hill for his inability to respond adequately to worker concerns, including Hill's sexist answer to one worker's question.

(PRWEB) March 14, 2002

CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE MELTON CRITICIZES INCUMBENT HILL'S REMARKS AT CAMPAIGN APPEARANCE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MARCH 6, 2002

BLOOMINGTON--Today, the Green Party's 9th District U. S. Congressional candidate, Jeff Melton, publicly criticized incumbent Democrat Baron Hill for comments Hill made during a Feb. 1 appearance at Ivy Tech State College. "In Indiana, we have lost 30,000 manufacturing jobs to such free trade agreements as NAFTA. Yet most of Hill's comments were a defense, and a poor one, of 'free trade' and Fast Track legislation." Melton noted that, while Hill claimed most of those laid off by corporations such as G. E. and Otis Elevator would eventually find higher-paying jobs, over 95% of net new jobs created since NAFTA was signed have been in the service sector. Locally, service sector workers earn only 65% of the pay of their manufacturing industry counterparts, and are far less likely to have such basic benefits as health insurance.

"I wasn't convinced, and I doubt many other people in the room were, either," said Melton. "He couldn't produce any evidence to support his claim save an anecdote about one person who got a good job after being laid off, and when an audience member cited a study finding significant income loss by NAFTA-downsized factory workers, all he could say was that he didn't believe the study. He also claimed that (corporate-friendly) globalization was inevitable, and that's just not true. We can create economic institutions and agreements that are a lot friendlier to the interests of working people than the ones he supports."

"So many of the students at Ivy Tech are people who have lost jobs because of the policies Baron Hill supports," said Dave Johnson, a Computer Technology Services employee at Ivy Tech. "I talk to them every day, and their situation is totally different from the way Hill portrays it. Students should not be penalized for trying to improve their situation, but that's what's happening to a lot of them who were laid off by companies like G. E. and Thomson."

Hill's response to another audience member's question shocked many in attendance. "During the question period, a student who had been laid off from G. E. told Hill that she had three kids, she was working two jobs, she was trying to go to school, and she wasn't sure she would be able to get a decent-paying job after she graduated," said IU senior Rebecca Riall. "Hill told her not to worry, that she was 'young and attractive' and thus would find something. As a working student myself, I found Hill's sexism and callousness to real survival concerns unacceptable."

Melton agreed. "For an elected official in this day and age to make a remark like that in a public forum is just astonishingly insensitive. He also didn't seem very sensitive to the concerns of workers in general, attributing them to 'fear of a global economy' rather than real experiences of being unable to meet basic economic needs. But I guess that's not surprising. While G. E. was destroying jobs in our community, they were helping him keep his by contributing $2000 to his campaign."

Team RMHC Raises Over $350,000 in Bank of America Chicago Marathon to Help Children and Families Worldwide

Team RMHC Raises Over $350,000 in Bank of America Chicago Marathon to Help Children and Families Worldwide

Bob Wolters Wins Race Entries to Marathon de Paris in April 2011 After Dedicating Race to His Brother Who Lost His Own Race Against Illness

Oak Brook, Ill. (Vocus) October 14, 2010

On October 10, 2010, and for the fifth consecutive year, Team RMHC crossed the finish line for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon raising more than $350,000 and exceeding the fundraising goal. More than two hundred Team RMHC runners from 27 states, Canada and Costa Rica completed the daunting 26.2 mile race to raise money to support Ronald McDonald House Charities and its core programs -- the Ronald McDonald House, Ronald McDonald Family Room, and Ronald McDonald Care.

Bob Wolters, a Team RMHC runner and President of CookTek®, a manufacturer of induction powered foodservice appliances, had never run a marathon before, but he chose 10.10.10 to run the race celebrating the memory of his brother Ryan who lost his battle against leukemia thirty years ago. During his brother’s treatment, Bob and his parents found strength in the system of support offered by the Ronald McDonald House near Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago. As the top fundraiser for Team RMHC, Bob was the winner of a roundtrip airfare and four day/three night stay in Paris for two people, as well as a race entry to the April 2011 Marathon de Paris.

"Ronald McDonald House Charities is an exceptional organization. I’ve witnessed firsthand how RMHC helps families stay together providing much more than just a place to stay, but providing emotional support that gives families the strength to endure during a very difficult time. I know my family and I were able to spend precious time with my brother before he lost his life to cancer. I will never forget our stay and the days I had with my brother,” said Wolters. Bob had always wanted to find a way to give back, so when he found out about Team RMHC, he immediately signed up to be one of the more than two hundred runners dedicating this marathon to children and families fighting their own race against illness and injury. “Running has always been a very important activity in my life, but now that I’ve done it with a purpose and in memory of my brother Ryan, I know that I have made a difference doing something I love."

RMHC supported its talented team of athletes with access to personalized online fundraising support on the Active Giving Network, discounted marathon training from the Charity's official training partner, Chicago Endurance Sports (CES), a pasta dinner the evening before the marathon, pre-and-post race hospitality at their tent in Charity Village and special Team RMHC running shirts for the big day.

"Team RMHC exemplifies our belief that we have strength in numbers. Runners, like Bob Wolters, who dedicated their Chicago Marathon to the over four million families we serve connect to millions of partnerships among donors, volunteers, doctors, hospitals, supporters and the community at large. These partnerships make our programs strong and allow us to support families when they are facing a child's medical crisis," said Jennifer Blanchard Smith, senior director of Communications and Special Programs, RMHC. “Thankfully, the Team RMHC runners recognized that many of the children we serve are running a marathon of their own as they fight illness and injury through months of hospital visits, surgeries and outpatient recovery."

Disparities Conference Organizer: Issues Beyond the Usual ‘Medical Model’ Contribute to Healthcare Disparities

Disparities Conference Organizer: Issues Beyond the Usual ‘Medical Model’ Contribute to Healthcare Disparities

-

Philadelphia, Pa. (Vocus) October 18, 2010

In a recent interview on WURD Radio, here, Dr. David Rivers, an assistant professor of the Medical University of South Carolina, and an organizer of the Fourth Annual Conference on Health Disparities, said this year’s conference, scheduled to be held in Philadelphia, November 10-13, 2010, will look beyond the usual “medical model” to focus on social determinants that can have significant impact on healthcare, as a strategy for reducing health disparities.

Commenting on how widespread societal issues, beyond direct medical services, contribute to healthcare disparities in this country, Rivers pointed out that: “We have 30 million people in this country who live below the poverty line… 30 percent of our young people don’t graduate high school and 175 million people live in locations where the air quality is bad. Each of those issues contribute to negative healthcare outcomes.”

According to Rivers, “Any sincere effort to eliminate health disparities has to recognize that where people live impacts the quality of their health. “If, for example, you live near a chemical producing plant, if you live near a landfill, those things can have an impact on your health.”

“Clean water,” he added, “is also an absolute necessity for addressing healthcare.”

“What we’ll be emphasizing at the conference, therefore,” said Rivers, “is that one of our first objectives should be to create healthy communities. Sometimes, even the design of a place tends to cause problems for people who want to participate in a regularly scheduled exercise program. So, in cases such as that, we also have an obligation to explore urban design alternatives.”

The Fourth Annual Conference on Health Disparities, scheduled to be held November 10-13, at the Marriott Hotel in Philadelphia, is designed to attract a wide spectrum of attendees, including healthcare providers, churches, elected officials, business leaders, insurance companies, working professionals and neighborhood residents.

Wellness International Network, Ltd Celebrates 15 Years of Wellness

Wellness International Network, Ltd Celebrates 15 Years of Wellness

Venturing into WIN's 15th year of business, Ralph Oats and Cathy Oats are celebrating their past successes as they continue WIN's global expansion in helping people achieve total wellness.

Plano, TX (PRWEB) January 1, 2007

Ralph Oats and Cathy Oats, Founders of Wellness International Network, Ltd. (WIN) (http://web. winltd. com), an undisputed leader in the health and nutrition industries, are pleased to announce that 2007 marks the company's 15th year in providing total wellness to people around the world.

In October 1992, Wellness International Network, Ltd. (WIN) opened its doors with a vision of an unlimited future. "We've been speaking our success into existence before we even officially opened for business. We knew where we were going and how we would get there -- it's remained the same today. We are looking for people who desire to make a change in their life. We have the system and the know-how, we're building a global company with one person at a time," says Ralph Oats, WIN Founder. In the first full month of business more than 1.7 million in volume was produced, with only a handful of products including BioLean®. Since then WIN has expanded its product line to include an entire BioLean® System (http://web. winltd. com/SC_Category. aspx? CategoryID=3&FlgService=N), a Physicians' Health & Diet® Program line and StePHan Cellular Nutrition. Always focusing on trends, WIN progressively added a full range of anti-aging products including WINSpa™ and WINSalon™ Collections (http://web. winltd. com/winspa/).

Ralph Oats and his wife, Cathy formed Wellness International Network, Ltd. (WIN) (http://web. winltd. com) to provide people an opportunity for total wellness, physically, mentally and financially. "Our business works because our products work," says Cathy Oats, WIN Founder. "WIN's foundation is based on sampling because we believe in our products and the results they produce." Results have been proved over and over again by the many product testimonies heard from customers, distributors and employees alike.

"I still kind of pinch myself because I can't believe it really happened," says Jane McColloch, a retail customer who lost 88 pounds by rotating the use of BioLean II® and BioLean Free® monthly in conjunction with exercise and a healthy diet. Jane who once thought it'd be impossible to weigh less than 200 pounds, delightfully wears a size 4. "I feel amazing," says Jane. "It stuns me how much stamina and energy I have!"

WIN hears exciting stories like Jane's (http://web. winltd. com/Article. aspx? PageURL=/Pages/English/successstories/perfectcombination. htm) often and has seen the results of people when they achieve the wellness they'd been searching for with, whether physically or mentally, and is the reason so many have the opportunity to create financial wellness for themselves.

Stefan and Gustavee Smith, distributors from South Africa, are enjoying the life-changing benefits they've achieved with WIN which has increased their passion for maximizing their opportunity and teaching others to do the same. Since joining WIN in March 2001, they've built a WIN market in South Africa and beyond. "WIN isn't work. We do it together, with our kids and on holiday," says Stefan, who used to spend weeks away from his family because of responsibilities at their PVC factory. "We're building the business doing the things we enjoy and sharing our lifestyle."

Ralph Oats and Cathy Oats, continue to raise the bar for people looking for an opportunity (http://web. winltd. com/Opportunity. aspx) to improve their situation, physically, mentally and financially. "It's amazing to look back over the years. We are thrilled WIN has been a vehicle for so many people to achieve all their wants and needs," says Cathy Oats, WIN Founder. "We're building a billion-dollar company by showing people how to take control of their destinies and teach others how to do the same I can't wait to see where WIN is after the next 15 years!"

Mi-Co Launches Mi-Forms on Demand Software for Rapid Deployment of HPÂ’s Forms Automation System

Mi-Co Launches Mi-Forms on Demand Software for Rapid Deployment of HPÂ’s Forms Automation System

(PRWEB) October 19, 2004

Research Triangle Park, NC and Orlando, FL. October 12, 2004. Mi-Co, the mobile data capture software company, announced today the production availability of Mi-Forms on Demand Software. For enterprises using HPÂ’s Forms Automation System (FAS), the Mi-Forms on Demand technology provides increased implementation flexibility, rich data quality, a verification environment and rapid deployment capabilities.

“Mi-Co is truly excited about this product launch, our relationship with HP through their Solution Provider Program and the positive impact that Mi-Forms on Demand has on companies deploying HP Forms Automation System,” stated Jim Clary, Mi-Co CEO. “While working closely with HP and our test sites, we witnessed the positive impacts that this technology combination has on the data capture process. In a hospital setting, for example, the cost savings can be remarkable.”

Test to Production: Cherokee Indian Health Authority (CIHA)

“For over 15 years, the Cherokee Indian Health Authority struggled to get handwritten data into their Resource and Patient Management System effectively and efficiently,” said Dr. Jim Eller of CIHA. “The combined technology solutions of HP FAS and Mi-Co Mi-Forms on Demand will really improve our organization’s ability to successfully manage our business and provide a caring, patient-centered environment for our community.”

Dr. Greg Clary, Mi-Co CTO, who has worked extensively with Dr. Eller, states, “As evidenced by the CIHA project, bringing the capabilities of Mi-Forms on Demand to HPÂ’s Forms Automation System provides our customers with the ability to shorten deployment time and reduce costs. Initial ROI studies have demonstrated a 60 percent reduction in forms processing costs.”

The HP Forms Automation System (FAS)

HP FAS revolutionizes the way handwritten data from paper forms is gathered and processed, using an innovative technology called Digital Pen and Paper. Users save time by eliminating the need to scan forms or manually re-key data. Users simply fill out their forms writing on patterned paper with the HP Digital Pen 200. When the pen is cradled to a PC, the system sends the information gathered directly to backend databases for enterprise use. With HP FAS, a printed form can include pre-filled data from a backend database, thus reducing costs and increasing data quality.

Mi-Co Mi-Forms On Demand

Mi-Forms on Demand is software specifically designed to work with the HP FAS System. Mi-Forms on Demand allows the user to effectively interface with the HP FAS System by rapidly designing forms, implementing state of the art handwritten data capture processes, efficiently verifying the data for accuracy and sending that information to the enterpriseÂ’s backend databases. Thus, Mi-Forms on Demand can substantially reduce implementation costs and time.

Mi-Forms on Demand Release 4.1 is in production and is generally available as of October 12, 2004. This release of Mi-Forms on Demand is optimized for the latest release of the HP Forms Automation System. For information on pricing and implementation services, please contact bpoole@mi-corporation. com.

TrustBearer Provides Technology Platform for EXTENSION® HealthID™, the Patient Smart card System Recently Endorsed by the American Hospital Association (AHA)

TrustBearer Provides Technology Platform for EXTENSION® HealthID™, the Patient Smart card System Recently Endorsed by the American Hospital Association (AHA)

In a partnership with EXTENSION, Inc., TrustBearer applied security software principles and techniques to help create the EXTENSION® HealthID™ product.

Fort Wayne, IN (PRWEB) October 28, 2009

TrustBearer Labs, an information security software company based in Fort Wayne, IN and Washington, D. C., partnered with EXTENSION, Inc. to develop the EXTENSION® HealthID™ patient smart card product. HealthID™ takes data from various electronic medical systems and securely stores important demographic and clinical data on patient smart cards. As noted in the American Hospital Association's press release describing the exclusive endorsement of HealthID™.

"Hospitals are able to quickly find and use patient's information within an individual facility or across their system or network. The benefits of the smart card include providing much improved patient experiences and streamlined administrative costs."

TrustBearer has been developing software applications that leverage the security features of smart cards for over 5 years. Historically, the company has focused on the U. S. Federal Government smart card market. The U. S. Government has paved the way for other industries to adopt smart cards by creating accepted standards including the Common Access Card (CAC) and Personal Identity Verification (PIV) identification standards. Development of these standards, together with government mandates requiring Federal agencies to replace their employee badges with smart cards, have fostered a smart card market for both hardware and software vendors.

TrustBearer applied security software principles and techniques to help create the EXTENSION® HealthID™ product, an expertise gained from their work with U. S. Government smart cards. The EXTENSION® Engine aggregates patient data from a variety of electronic medical systems. Critical patient data, such as name, date of birth, medical record number, insurance details, allergies, immunizations, and medications are then securely written to a patient smart card using HealthID™.

TrustBearer President, David Corcoran, noted, "We are very excited to be part of one of the first end-to-end patient smart card systems available in the health care market. Combining our security software experience with EXTENSION Inc's medical systems software has produced a full-featured smart card product that is ready to deploy today, not years from now."

The only end-user requirements for use of EXTENSION® HealthID™ are a web browser and a smart card reader. The TrustBearer Live smart card middleware handles communication with patient cards. It is delivered as a web browser plug-in, which is updated transparently and without user interaction. Because the system is completely web-based, HealthID™ can be deployed through a wide variety of systems such as self-service kiosks. TrustBearer Live is used in all TrustBearer web products, including the free TrustBearer OpenID provider (available at https://openid. trustbearer. com (https://openid. trustbearer. com)).

TrustBearer plans to offer web applications that will allow patients to access services using their HealthID™ card at a home computer. Beyond services offered by health providers, patients may eventually sync health information on their card with online Personal Health Record (PHR) services such as Google™ Health and Microsoft® HealthVault™.

For more information on the EXTENSION® HealthID™ endorsement, visit AHA Solutions at www. aha-solutions. org.

Workplace Violence Expert W. Barry Nixon Comes to Aid of Beleaguered Health Care Workers

Workplace Violence Expert W. Barry Nixon Comes to Aid of Beleaguered Health Care Workers

Nixon Offers Security Tips: Seven Things Every Health Care Worker Needs to Know About Workplace Violence.

LAKE FOREST, CA (PRWEB) July 27, 2005

From 1996 to 2000, 69 health care workers were killed on the job and among all American workers, health care and social services have the highest rates of non-fatal assault injuries in the workplace. According to a recent study by the American Nursing Association (ANA), nearly a half million nurses per year reported that they were victims of violent crimes in the workplace. With this in mind, preeminent workplace violence expert, W. Barry Nixon, SPHR, Executive Director, National Institute for the Prevention of Workplace Violence, Inc., has released a list of 7 things every health care worker needs to know about workplace violence.

“Every individual has a right to a safe workplace. My goal is to provide a quick set of easily assimilated tips anyone can use. While every Healthcare Worker should accept the fact that, given the increasing statistics, the chance of being exposed to Workplace Violence is very real; Healthcare Workers should also adapt and completely accept the paradigm that ‘violence is not a part of the job.’ Refuse to accept that becoming a victim is inevitable because most incidents of workplace violence are preventable if the organization and employees take the necessary steps to prevent it,” commented Nixon.

According to Nixon, there are 7 things every health care worker needs to know about Workplace Violence:

1. Adapt and completely accept the paradigm that ‘violence is not a part of the job.Â’ Also, given recent statistics, accept the fact that the chance of you being exposed to workplace violence is very real. Refuse to accept that becoming a victim is inevitable because most incidents of workplace violence are preventable if your organization and employees take the necessary steps to prevent it.

(see NIX Model for Managing Workplace Violence at www. Workplaceviolence911.com

2. Read your organizations workplace violence prevention policy and understand the definition of workplace violence and its components. (See Model Policies and definitions at www. Workplaceviolence911.com).

3. Make a commitment to know, understand and recognize the potential warning signs or ‘at riskÂ’ behaviors that individuals frequently demonstrate prior to an incident of workplace violence.

4. Make a commitment to get training in workplace violence prevention. Request that your Union and/or Employer offers a program and if this does not happen, seek out information from the Human Resources, Security, Occupational Health & Safety departments; a professional association, e. g., ANA, AAOHN, ASIS, SHRM, etc.; from the internet; (www. Workplaceviolence911.com), or read a book on the subject.

5. Take responsibility for your own safety and security at work. Report any and all concerns to the designated company representative, such as an Occupational Health and Safety professional, Human Resource or security manager. DonÂ’t let peer pressure, a code of silence, belief that management will not take action or anything else prevent you from taking steps to protect yourself. If you recognize that a colleague, patients or visitors is exhibiting ‘at riskÂ’ behavior, report it.

6. As an employee, report any concerns about unsafe work conditions, breaches of your security policies or environmental or organizational conditions that may contribute to workplace violence to your human resources representative, security or occupational health professional.

7. If your organization has a process for identifying high-risk patients and flagging charts or records of patients with a history of violence, make sure you understand it and take precautionary steps to protect yourself. Never dismiss these processes as unnecessary or not applicable (based on your experience with the person.) If your organization does not have a process, work with Human Resources, Security, or Occupational Health & Safety professionals to develop one.

Nixon offers these final words of advice; ”while it is certainly an organization’s responsibility to provide a safe work environment for its employees, remember that it is your life that may be at stake; don’t leave any stone unturned and do all you can to protect yourself.”

Mr. Nixon is certified in Security, Anger Management and Trauma Response. He is a recognized expert and regularly speaks at industry conferences such as ASIS International, Employment Management Association, SHRM, etc. He has authored many published articles and is regularly interviewed by radio and TV news shows as a workplace violence expert, both domestic and international.

Mr. Nixon is also creator of the award winning web site www. workplaceviolence911.com, the Ultimate Workplace Violence Prevention Policy Maker Software and www. PreemploymentDirectory. com, the most comprehensive source of background screening firms available on the Internet.

Complete details and a full review of workplace violence issues can be found at www. workplaceviolence911.com. Or by calling W. Barry Nixon at 949-770-5264.
