The groundbreaking project – called “K. I.N. D.: Kids in Need of Desks” – aims to help Malawian children, parents, and local communities build and sustain an accessible educational system that promotes completion and achievement. In Sub-Saharan Africa, approximately 45 million children do not go to school for reasons that range from lack of facilities to gender discrimination. Even still, it is not uncommon for those children who do attend school to do so in the open, usually under trees, or in overcrowded classrooms where there is no furniture save a chalkboard. They sit on dusty floors in shells of buildings that may or may not have a roof.

In Malawi in particular, only one in five children have access to school furniture like desks and chairs. Yet, research has demonstrated that adequate teaching infrastructure, including furniture, can positively impact the participation of children in school. This campaign will help UNICEF meet its goal of ensuring that by 2012, 80 percent of Malawi’s schools are implementing the Child-Friendly Schools Initiative.

“We know that a child is more likely to learn and stay in school if they are doing so in a welcoming and comfortable environment. The addition of something we may take for granted - a desk - can make a major difference in a child’s future,” said President and CEO of the U. S. Fund for UNICEF Caryl Stern. “Together with MSNBC, we will provide Malawian children with the tools they need to succeed. Through this program, we hope to see an increased number of children who enroll, attend and complete the entire eight years of their primary school education.”

The Physicians and staff at the Orthopedic Institute (OI) are combining team spirit with a desire to help others. On Wednesday, November 24, they will be holding a Bedlam Bash cookout at the OI building and will collect food for the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. They are issuing a challenge to all OU and OSU fans to see who can collect the most food. Just drop off your non-perishable food items at the Orthopedic Institute, 1044 SW 44th, Oklahoma City, on the third floor. There will be separate collection boxes for each team.

According to statistics provided by the food bank, the majority of those served by the Regional Food Bank are children, children living on fixed incomes and working families who cannot make ends meet. The food bank provides enough food to feed 77,000 people each week across several counties, all with less than 4% administrative and fundraising costs.

“During this holiday season, and time of economic hardship for many, the Orthopedic Institute family would like to share with Oklahomans who are less fortunate, by donating to the regional food bank. We are asking that others in the Oklahoma City community help us help the food bank provide for those in need this season,” stated Dr. Houshang Seradge

TO PREMIER IN NEW YORK City

Sierra Vista, Arizona—October 12, 2002--"The Fisherman's Clever Daughter, a unique, entertaining, educational, children's operetta, with lyrics written by Dr. Sam Caron, opens November 10th at the Jan Hus Theater in New York City.

It is being produced by the Czechoslovak-American Marionette Theater, under the direction of Vít Horejš, as a part of the Magic of Czech Puppetry Festival. During November and December, the show will also tour schools, parks, and libraries in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens and be performed at the Boehmian Hall in Astoria, Queens.

Caron based his lyrics on Horejš' rendition of this classic Czech folktale. The music was composed by Benjamin, Caron's oldest son. The two previously collaberated on the original didactic songs in Dr. Caron's 10 ADHD lessons for children and families. The ADHD lessons combine ventriloquism, music, animation, magic, and humor to make learning about ADHD fun.

Besides being a child psychologist, Dr. Caron is also a ventriloquist who has conducted workshops and performed at the International Ventriloquist Festival in Las Vegas and at the Japanese Ventriloquist Festival in Tokyo. He will return to Tokyo this November 24th to participate again and perform a Jewish theme puppet skit about peace in the family.

Caron stated, “ When I originally combined my ventriloquism and psychotherapy skills, I did it to improve my counseling and never imagined that it would result in me being on television, winning awards and traveling all the way to Tokyo."

Regarding the operetta Dr. Caron said, "I try to write lyrics which don't insult children's intelligence. The play teaches about gender equality and the importance of sharing. A variety of musical styles makes the production even more enjoyable.

As a ventriloquist, I am thrilled that the first production of my songs will be by fellow puppeteers using Czech marionettes. I have seen other shows produced by Vít and am thrilled that he has decided to produce my operetta."

Investing immediately in a national preschool program would yield high returns - including possibly shoring up an ailing Social Security system - says a new WestEd report.

According to economist Robert G. Lynch, funding a national, high-quality, early childhood development program would help balance cash-strapped government budgets by creating year-over-year incremental savings. This includes the Social Security program, which some experts project will begin facing financial difficulties in the year 2018, about the time when the first class of today's preschoolers would enter the workforce.

By selecting all three - and four-year-olds who fall below the poverty line, Lynch's proposed national preschool program would enroll the very 1.6 million youngsters who, as they grow up, would otherwise cost taxpayers most. A national preschool program would also directly benefit the children and families it would serve. When poor children are provided access to high-quality preschool, research shows they perform much better in school, experience higher graduation rates, and tend to stay out of trouble with drugs, alcohol, and crime.

"From an investment point of view, the returns are greater than if we invested the same amount of money in the stock market. It's an ingenious way for our tax dollars to beat average Wall Street returns while benefiting society at the same time," says Lynch.

Lynch estimates the annual preschool cost per child at $12,000. If the national program were fully implemented next year, by the time the first preschoolers entered the workforce, they would contribute substantially to Social Security and help counteract the demands aging baby boomers will place on the system. As adults, they would enter the workforce at higher skill levels, earning larger salaries and paying higher taxes into the system.

Although the up-front costs of the program would be substantial, the payoff is huge. In addition to helping Social Security, such a publicly funded early childhood development program is expected to have enormous positive impacts on our society by improving the quality of life for millions of children and lowering crime rates. It would also benefit the U. S. economy by raising the Gross Domestic Product, helping to balance government budgets, and strengthening global competitiveness.

In response to the report, J. Ronald Lally, co-director of WestEd's Center for Child and Family Studies, emphasized the importance of high-quality preschool. "As a society we have ignored too long the indisputable research demonstrating the clear benefits of high quality out-of-home care for children from birth to age six. Now is the time to act."

WestEd's peer-reviewed report follows on the heels of a March 2005 RAND study showing the economic benefits of a preschool program for all children in the state of California.

Ty Perkins is an orphan from Taiwan who was adopted last year. He suffers from Fanconi anemia and will die without a successful bone marrow/stem cell transplant.

Karen Magrath, TyÂ’s adoptive mother, was desperate to find a way to get Ty to New York for much needed treatments. She knew there had to be a way to save her son as he had already suffered way too much for a boy his age. Because of Ty's extremely compromised immune status due to progressive bone marrow failure, he is no longer allowed to be in close quarters with large numbers of people. This means he may not attend school, church, extra-curricular activities, sporting events, theme parks, etc. It also means he may not fly commercial airlines any longer.

This is where volunteer pilot organization of Tampa Florida called CAIR Flight, Inc. stepped into the picture. TyÂ’ originally needed a flight to New York City's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center for pre-transplant testing earlier this year. Now with a donor located, he needs to be able to fly at a moments notice. He is scheduled to begin his journey in Melbourne on Sunday June 5, 2005 at 9:30 AM.

CAIR Flight executive Director, Rick Wachstein coordinated the 1100 mile trip with two separate groups, Angel Flight GA and Angel Flight EAST. The flight will consist of three stops originating in Melbourne Florida. CAIR Flight volunteer pilot, Gray Sample, will fly the first leg to Atlanta Georgia where an Angel

Flight GA pilot will continue on to Richmond Virginia. From Richmond, Angel Flight EAST pilot, Michael Peck will finish out the trip landing in Teterboro New Jersey.

Friday, June 30. The showroom is located at 639 Brookway Boulevard.

Store manager Derrick Pattie invited Brookhaven-area residents to come meet the staff, enjoy refreshments and learn about mobility solutions. "A person’s ability to retain their independence and perform activities of daily living in their own home is tremendously important," Pattie said. "This is a great opportunity for people with mobility challenges and their caregivers to learn how to operate our products and to find out firsthand what options are available to help maintain that freedom."

The celebration was featured on a live on-site radio remote broadcast by 92.1 WBKN-FM. Members of the Brookhaven/Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce joined representatives from The SCOOTER Store for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1 p. m., and WBKN-FM gave away tickets to a Tim McGraw/Faith Hill concert at 2 p. m. Food was provided by Little Caesar’s Pizza. Licensed massage therapist Cydnee Russell offered free massages and District VII Home Health will provide complimentary blood pressure and glucose checks.

Besides power chairs and scooters, the store will feature a broad range of healthcare products including lift chairs, bath and safety items, rollators and other therapeutic items. The SCOOTER Store also assists consumers with insurance paperwork and provides in-home service on the power chairs and scooters it sells.

The new Brookway Boulevard location replaces a previous retail store that had served the needs of people in the area since 2004. It is part of the company’s nationwide network of retail stores, distribution centers, service specialists and account managers across the country.
