The Kids Ecology Corps 150 mile/24 hour Skate-a-thon! Go the distance for the earth!

To coincide with America Recycles Day on November 16th, 2002, the Kids Ecology Corps will be holding their third annual 150 mile/24 hour skate-a-thon at The Pompano Beach Air Park to raise money and awareness for Kids Ecology Corps Programs.

Pompano Beach, FL – In-line roller bladers can gather from across South Florida and participate in a 24-hour skate-a-thon being held by the Kids Ecology Corps, a nonprofit organization that teaches kids they CAN make a difference concerning environmental issues. The fundraising skate-a-thon will be held at the Pompano Air Park, 1001 NE 10th Street, Pompano Beach on Saturday, November 16th, 2002, starting at 7 a. m. and continuing on until 7 a. m. Sunday morning.

“We want the growing number of in-line skaters in South Florida to know they can help bring an environmental curriculum to thousands of kids each year,” said The Kids Ecology Corps co-founder Leonard Solomon, the 74 year-old grandfather of eleven and former CEO of Diversified Services/Budget Rent-a-Car.

“We organize events like this to teach and inspire young people that simple actions they take in their daily lives do impact the earth and its precious natural resources.”

Everyone is welcome! The course is 4.4 miles around the park and safe for skaters. Participants are asked to obtain contributing sponsors. Prizes will be raffled for different categories of contributions. A $25 minimum sponsorship provides healthy food, water and sports drinks, and a Kids Ecology Corps T-shirt.

Leading the challenge to skate 150 miles within 24 hours, Solomon cycled across the USA in 1981 to raise money and raise awareness to End World Hunger. In 2001, he bladed 150 miles in 17 hours to raise money and awareness for The Kids Ecology Corps. Also accepting the challenge is Jaap Vos, Professor of Environmental Planning at Florida Atlantic University who in 1989 crossed the United States on roller-blades.

“The dual purpose of this challenge is to raise funds for The Kids Ecology Corps and raise public awareness for America Recycles Day,” said Solomon. “This will be the third year that The Kids Ecology Corps has held a skate-a-thon. Our goal is to take action for a safer and cleaner earth and to show kids they can make a difference!”
