Vancouver dentist Dr. Edward Lowe is marking April's designation as Oral Health Month with his own campaign to fight oral cancer. Using Velscope, a highly sensitive oral mucosal examination tool developed in B. C. - Dr. Lowe has designated March 27 as 'Halt Oral Cancer Day' in downtown Vancouver. He and his team will conduct complimentary oral cancer screenings for any Vancouver resident in his downtown office located at 601-1200 Burrard St. Vancouver, B. C.

Dr. Lowe notes that oral cancer is a preventable and screenable cancer, yet continues to be diagnosed in later stages with high mortality rates. Approximately 25% of the diagnoses are in patients who did not smoke tobacco. The 5-year survival rates are in the 50-60% range which is shocking. However, when detected early, survival rates exceed 90% over 5 years.

Dr. Lowe believes that Velscope, used appropriately in combination with the traditional head, neck, and oral tissue exam is the key to early detection. The B. C. Cancer Agency recommends annual oral cancer screening for all adults 40 years of age and older, regardless of tobacco usage. The College of Dental Surgeons of B. C. also recommends Velscope as an option to Dentists to assist in their examinations.

For that reason, Dr. Lowe is opening his doors to any Vancouver area resident. The usual $39 fee will be waived for this awareness day, however donations are encouraged and will be forwarded to the B. C. Cancer Agency. Appointments are necessary and can be reserved at 604-683-2483.
