American Fiber Systems Connects Groundbreaking Vanderbilt Medical Center

Vanderbilt Connects Via AFS's Network and Revitalizes One Hundred Oaks

Rochester, NY and Nashville, TN (PRWEB) November 11, 2008

Optical fiber network (http://www. americanfibersystems. com/) provider American Fiber Systems (AFS) and Vanderbilt Medical Center today announced a new project to connect the university to One Hundred Oaks mall, the planned site of Vanderbilt's new 440,000 square foot, state-of-the-art medical mall. Twenty-one Vanderbilt Medical Center clinics, including pediatrics, neurology and oncology, will rely on the AFS fiber optic network (http://www. americanfibersystems. com/) for the secure and safe transfer of high-definition X-rays, real-time records and other mission critical data.

The network solution is specifically designed to accommodate Vanderbilt's consistent annual growth and connects the university campus to both the new medical center location and a remote data center location to be used for storage and back-up. This expansion ensures redundant coverage for traffic between the three locations and increases network survivability to further protect the $64 million medical center investment.

"What Vanderbilt is doing with One Hundred Oaks mall is groundbreaking," said Jeff Williams, Vice President of Enterprise Sales for AFS (http://www. americanfibersystems. com/). "Nashville has grown accustomed to relying on Vanderbilt's expertise whenever they have a sick family member--and we are honored that Vanderbilt, in turn, depends on the reliability of the AFS team and our network to make sure the clinic's data services run without disruption."

For more than five years, the Vanderbilt University campus has connected to over 56 miles of the AFS fiber network in Nashville, supporting IT and data center functionality. The AFS network provides the institution with cutting-edge communications capabilities and connection speeds, keeping Vanderbilt at the forefront of technology in advanced learning.

"Vanderbilt is driven to set new standards for research, education and patient care and the network infrastructure is one of the underlying technologies enabling these possibilities. Our goal then is to partner and align ourselves with technologies and services that are highly available yet flexible to meet the growth and evolving demands of the institution," said David Cochran, Network Services Manager, Vanderbilt University.
