IPPT Career School, located in North Hollywood, CA is one of a handful of schools in the nation that bases its teachings on European Medical Massage Therapy. This type of massage therapy was developed in Russia and later in Germany some hundreds of years ago. Now, this method is widely utilized in the treatment and prevention of a wide variety of musculoskeletal, neurological, vascular, and internal organ disorders. Not only is this method of therapy extremely effective in treating and preventing diseases, but it is also virtually side-effect-free. Russian medical massage has a long history but has only been known in the United States since the 1980s. Russian medical massage is routinely incorporated into all aspects of health and healing in Russia. It was extensively used in the 1960’s, 1970’s and 1980’s during the time that Russian athletes dominated many sports in the Olympics. Many of these athletes were able to have longer careers because they were better prepared by proper pre-event and post-event rehabilitative Sports massage and the proper warm up procedure; a sequence of special exercises including neuromuscular re-education and post isometric relaxation that made sure that all the muscles of the responsible regions work in assembly and in the neurological sense. Such powerful scientifically based methods make sure that joints are stable enough to withstand huge competitive loads and to perform to the maximum physiological potential of individual athletes.

Exactly how does massage enhance sports performance or contribute to health and wellness? That question was posed to Nataliya Borchenko, School Director at IPPT Career School. “Massage therapy is preventative healing. It is one of the most natural and effective tools for stress management. Stress is known to be one of the major causes of ailments, which contributes to the rise of poor health in this country. Massage therapy is also used effectively in the sports industry (rehabilitation of sports related injuries and over-training) and injury prevention.”

What differences are there between Russian massage and other forms of massage? Russian medical massage is based in medical treatment. Russian massage is focused on the actual effect that the massage will bring on an underlying symptom or actual disease. Other forms of massage are focused on the area of the body being addressed. This is directly related to the history of Russian medical massage as a part of a total medical treatment program.

IPPT Career School teaches the bases of Russian massage techniques including all strokes which fall into two basic categories based on whether they stimulate or sedate the central nervous system. The techniques of effleurage and friction are in the central nervous system sedating category, and petrissage and vibration in certain frequencies are in the stimulating category.

IPPT Career School was founded by Boris Prilutsky. Boris Prilutsky was educated and trained in the secrets of Russian rehabilitative sports medicine and worked extensively with elite athletes under the Soviet System. Boris Prilutsky was one of the pioneers who introduced Medical and Sports Massage to American practitioners.
