Manhattan Fitness Professional Warns of Serious Weight Gain During Tax Season

Tax season is stressful and stress often leads to weight gain. Fitness professional warns this can cause serious weight gain during this time of year.

New York, NY (PRWEB) April 11, 2006

It's tax season again. For many people this is an extremely stressful time of year. Stress has been associated with weight gain, and fitness professional Katrina McKenna warns that this could cause excessive weight in many individuals.

There are several ways the stress causes people to gain weight. First when we are under stress the adrenal glands produce more cortisol. Excess cortisol will slow down your metabolism. The slower the metabolism, the fewer calories you are burning throughout the day. So if people do not eat less or exercise more, then the pounds are added.

To add insult to injury, people under stress have cravings and these cravings are often for sweet and fatty foods, or comfort foods. Eating sugar causes serotonin to be released in the brain creating a more positive mood. So now in addition to having a lowered metabolism, people are eating more high caloric food in order to feel better, an even bigger calorie excess is created. This is often referred to as emotional eating.

Due to deadlines, people are often too busy to exercise or prepare healthy food. So people will often eat the unhealthy convenient alternatives, like fast food and candy or chips from vending machines and skip their workouts. The poor food choices are often very high in calories and very low in nutrients.

The overeating combined with lack of exercise will wreak havoc on a person’s blood sugar levels, causing fatigue and even more cravings leading to a viscous cycle if not caught and corrected.

To combat this, fitness professional, Katrina McKenna, suggests taking short breaks to do a few exercises and to prepare healthy snacks ahead of time.
