When the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Comprehensive Cancer Center decided to enhance their clinical research infrastructure, comprehensive functionality and a reputation for customer service contributed to their decision to select the OnCore(r) clinical research management system from PercipEnz Technologies, Inc. in December.

By replacing a system that had been created and maintained in-house over the last 25 years, UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center believes the transition to OnCore will contribute to key strategic priorities for the center. These goals include centralizing clinical trials operations, cost containment, enhanced ability to comply with regulatory guidelines, and demonstrating compatibility with the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid (NCI’s caBIG™) program.

“As clinical trials work has required more specialized personnel, the cost benefits of becoming more centralized have become apparent,” said Michael Bertram, PhD, Associate Director for Administration, UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. “OnCore will help us bring everyone under one umbrella.”

“It is certainly a pleasure to welcome UAB to the OnCore community,” said Srini Kalluri, president and CEO of PercipEnz Technologies, Inc., the creator of OnCore. “They are a very focused and energetic group. We look forward to a successful implementation and many years of collaboration.”

The center has begun implementation according to the standard OnCore implementation plan and all of the center’s research groups will begin using the system right away.

Bertram also expects the new system to improve the center’s ability to comply with regulatory guidelines. As part of this effort, the center has elected to use the Electronic Protocol Review and Monitoring System (ePRMS), a module in OnCore that provides committee and workflow management for the scientific review process prior to activation of a new clinical trial.

During the center’s search for a new system, Bertram consulted with his peers at other cancer centers. “OnCore was highly recommended by other cancer center administrators and clinical trial personnel,” said Bertram. “PercipEnz’s reputation for customer service is excellent.”

As an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center, compatibility with NCI's caBIG™ program was a requirement for the new system. OnCore received caBIG Bronze compatibility certification in April, 2008. The certification is based on compliance with guidelines set by NCI’s caBIG™ program, the objective of which is to provide a framework to access and use data from remote data resources with the ultimate goal of creating greater transparency and efficiency for cancer clinical research operations.

“We’re excited about rolling-out the new system and to be participating in the user community,” said Bertram.

About OnCore

The OnCore platform is the product of PercipEnz Technologies, Inc., a software development company specializing in clinical and translational research informatics for midsized to large organizations. As the nation's most widely adopted clinical trials management system (CTMS) among academic research organizations and cancer centers, the OnCore platform is the result of nearly a decade of experience working closely with large research organizations, including many world-class NCI designated cancer centers and institutes funded by the National Institute of Health's Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) program.

The OnCore Clinical Research Management system (OnCore-CRM) offers a comprehensive set of modules for managing all aspects of clinical research:
Protocol & Subject Life Cycle Management  Subject Safety Management  Protocol & Subject Calendar Management  Study Financials Management  Electronic Data Capture and Data Management  Paperless Committee Management with ePRMS  Study Information Portal  Custom Reporting Technology

In addition to the clinical research management system, two other systems complete the OnCore family of products. These are OnCore for Biospecimen Management (OnCore-BSM) and OnCore for Unified Registries Management (OnCore-URM).
