Sun Microsystems and Fujitsu Siemens Computers Power PRIMERGY Servers With Solaris Operating System : New OEM Agreement Expands Customer Choice, Meets Growing Demand for Solaris OS on x86 Systems

Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq:JAVA) today announced a multi-year OEM agreement with Fujitsu Siemens(TM) Computers to distribute the Solaris(TM) Operating System (OS) and Solaris(TM) Subscriptions with selected Fujitsu Siemens PRIMERGY servers. The agreement enables Fujitsu Siemens to streamline how its customers acquire Solaris-based PRIMERGY systems and related support services by offering Solaris with its servers from the factory. SANTA CLARA, Calif. (PRWEB) June 10, 2008

Fujitsu Siemens Computers is among a number of leading global systems vendors to announce it will offer Solaris on x86 systems. Today, the Solaris 10 OS is supported on more than 950 x86/x64 systems and more than 4,000 x86/x64 applications are available for Solaris 10.

"This agreement is great news for customers of both Sun and Fujitsu Siemens Computers and underscores the tremendous demand we've seen building for Solaris on x86 systems. Customers will now have an expanded choice of systems certified to run Solaris as well as a simplified method for purchasing Solaris Subscriptions with PRIMERGY servers," said Rich Green, executive vice president of software for Sun Microsystems. "By expanding the Solaris footprint, we're opening the door a little wider for companies – especially those in the public sector, financial services, telecommunications, retail and healthcare – to access the advanced scalability, reliability and virtualization features that are unique to the Solaris OS."

"Having supported Solaris on SPARC(R) systems for some time now, Fujitsu Siemens Computers has deep experience with service and support of Solaris. As we expand support to PRIMERGY servers, we'll leverage this experience to provide immediate benefits to our customers. Furthermore, offering our customers choice and streamlining their purchasing and deployment experience are of paramount importance to Fujitsu Siemens and this new agreement with Sun allows us to do just that," said Jens-Peter Seick, senior vice president Enterprise Server Business EMEA for Fujitsu Siemens Computers. "Solaris 10 is a world-class operating system that offers the unmatched reliability our customers demand. We look forward to working with Sun to provide that the combination of PRIMERGY servers and the Solaris OS delivers customer value for applications that require scalability, security and performance."

Customers selecting PRIMERGY servers powered by Solaris are able to take advantage of Solaris 10 5/08, the latest update to Sun's Solaris 10 platform. Solaris 10 5/08 features improved performance and new platform-tuned power management capabilities for x86-based processors from AMD(TM) and Intel(R). Solaris 10 offers a unique feature set unmatched in the industry, including Solaris(TM) ZFS, Predictive Self-Healing, Virtualization and Dynamic Tracing (DTrace) to help customers improve uptime, cut costs and speed time to market.
