First medical center to standardize streaming live neurosurgery in 3D

Santa Barbara, CA (PRWEB) May 3, 2010

TrueVision 3D Surgical today announced that its 3D visualization platform for the operating room has been adopted by the Arkansas Neuroscience Institute (ANI) at St. Vincent Health System. TrueVision® is a real-time 3D HD visualization system for microsurgery. In addition, TrueVision is used for streaming video, broadcasting live procedures, proctoring, and surgical education in 3D.

The St. Vincent neurosurgery department equipped their operating suites with TrueVision visualization for day-to-day surgery and implemented advanced technology to stream live video of the surgical field of view in 3D over the network to a TrueVision 3D-enabled conference room across campus for the education of medical students, residents, fellows, and doctors. The specialized 3D room also is used for presenting on-demand 3D surgical video content.

The 3D Center of Excellence made its debut during the “Durability and Efficiency in Microneurosurgery Conference” held in March 2010 with live 3D video as the cornerstone of the curriculum for surgeons from around the world.

TrueVision enables surgeons to perform and record surgery in 3D via a heads-up 1080p display instead of looking through the microscope. Surgeons, residents, and the operating room staff can view what traditionally only one or two surgeons could observe through the microscope. It is ideal for training and education. The 3D video playback enables viewers to see surgery as if they were performing the surgery themselves through the microscope enhancing the educational experience to three dimensions.

Ali F. Krisht MD, Director of Arkansas Neuroscience Institute at St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center stated, “We continuously stream live 3D video from the operating room to our conference room across the campus. This enables course participants and staff to view surgical procedures in high quality 3D that matches exactly what I see through the microscope. There is no doubt the value of 3D video is a significant educational advantage over 2D and we are proud to be the first neurosurgery program to standardize on live streaming 3D video. ”

“According to the latest studies by Texas Instruments, the 3D medium has been shown to increase test scores over 2D for human anatomy education by 35%. With the advent of very high quality 3D video available there are many advantages that TrueVision brings to the table,” says Forrest Fleming, CEO of Santa Barbara-based TrueVision 3D Surgical. “The Arkansas Neuroscience Institute program has taken a leadership role toward making very high-quality 3D imagery the standard for the medical community and for residency and teaching programs.”
